Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.1 A Canticle in steps. Blessed are all those who fear the Lord, who walk in his ways.
It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.2 For you will eat by the labors of your hands. Blessed are you, and it will be well with you.
Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.3 Your wife is like an abundant vine on the sides of your house. Your sons are like young olive trees surrounding your table.
As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth.4 Behold, so will the man be blessed who fears the Lord.
Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.5 May the Lord bless you from Zion, and may you see the good things of Jerusalem, all the days of your life.
And may you see the sons of your sons. Peace be upon Israel.
