2 Maccabees 6

1 Not long after this the king sent an old man of Athens to compel the Jews to depart from the laws of their fathers, and not to live after the laws of God:	1 Pouco tempo depois, um velho ateniense foi enviado pelo rei para forçar os judeus a abandonar os costumes dos antepassados, banir as leis de Deus da cidade,
2 And to pollute also the temple in Jerusalem, and to call it the temple of Jupiter Olympius; and that in Garizim, of Jupiter the Defender of strangers, as they did desire that dwelt in the place.	2 macular o templo de Jerusalém, dedicá-lo a Júpiter Olímpico e consagrar o do monte Garizim, segundo o caráter dos habitantes do lugar, a Júpiter Hospitaleiro.
3 The coming in of this mischief was sore and grievous to the people:	3 Dura e penosa foi para todos essa avalanche de mal.
4 For the temple was filled with riot and revelling by the Gentiles, who dallied with harlots, and had to do with women within the circuit of the holy places, and besides that brought in things that were not lawful.	4 O templo encheu-se de lascívias e das orgias dos gentios que se divertiam com meretrizes, unindo-se às mulheres nos átrios sagrados e introduzindo coisas ilegais.
5 The altar also was filled with profane things, which the law forbiddeth.	5 O altar estava coberto de vítimas impuras, interditas pelas leis.
6 Neither was it lawful for a man to keep sabbath days or ancient fasts, or to profess himself at all to be a Jew.	6 Não se permitia mais a observância do sábado, a celebração das antigas festas, nem mesmo confessar-se judeu.
7 And in the day of the king's birth every month they were brought by bitter constraint to eat of the sacrifices; and when the fast of Bacchus was kept, the Jews were compelled to go in procession to Bacchus, carrying ivy.	7 Em cada mês, no dia natalício do rei, realizava-se um sacrifício; os judeus eram odiosamente forçados a tomar parte no banquete ritual e, por ocasião das festas em honra de Dionísio, deviam forçosamente acompanhar o cortejo de Baco, coroados com hera.
8 Moreover there went out a decree to the neighbour cities of the heathen, by the suggestion of Ptolemee, against the Jews, that they should observe the same fashions, and be partakers of their sacrifices:	8 Por instigação dos ptolomeus, foi publicado um decreto que obrigava as cidades helênicas dos arredores a tratar os judeus do mesmo modo e levá-los à participação nos banquetes rituais, com a ordem de matar os que se recusassem a adotar os costumes helênicos.
9 And whoso would not conform themselves to the manners of the Gentiles should be put to death. Then might a man have seen the present misery.	9 Podiam-se, pois, prever as aflições que os aguardavam.
10 For there were two women brought, who had circumcised their children; whom when they had openly led round about the city, the babes handing at their breasts, they cast them down headlong from the wall.	10 Assim, duas mulheres foram acusadas de circuncidarem suas crianças: foram arrastadas publicamente pela cidade, com seus filhinhos pendurados aos peitos e precipitadas do alto das muralhas.
11 And others, that had run together into caves near by, to keep the sabbath day secretly, being discovered by Philip, were all burnt together, because they made a conscience to help themselves for the honour of the most sacred day.	11 Outros se haviam retirado às cavernas vizinhas para aí celebrarem secretamente o dia de sábado. Denunciados a Filipe, foram todos queimados, pois não ousaram defender-se, por respeito à santidade do dia.
12 Now I beseech those that read this book, that they be not discouraged for these calamities, but that they judge those punishments not to be for destruction, but for a chastening of our nation.	12 Suplico aos que lerem este livro, que não se deixem abater por esses tristes acontecimentos, mas que considerem que esses castigos tiveram em mira não a ruína, mas a correção de nossa raça;
13 For it is a token of his great goodness, when wicked doers are not suffered any long time, but forthwith punished.	13 porque é sinal de uma grande benevolência a seu respeito o fato de não suportar por muito tempo os maus e de, ao contrário, castigá-los sem tardança.
14 For not as with other nations, whom the Lord patiently forbeareth to punish, till they be come to the fulness of their sins, so dealeth he with us,	14 Quanto às outras nações, o Senhor espera pacientemente, antes de puni-las, que tenham enchido a medida de suas iniqüidades; a nós, porém, ele prefere não nos tratar assim,
15 Lest that, being come to the height of sin, afterwards he should take vengeance of us.	15 com receio de ter que nos punir mais tarde, quando tivermos pecado demasiadamente.
16 And therefore he never withdraweth his mercy from us: and though he punish with adversity, yet doth he never forsake his people.	16 Assim, não nos retire ele jamais a sua misericórdia e não abandone seu povo, no momento em que o corrige pela adversidade!
17 But let this that we at spoken be for a warning unto us. And now will we come to the declaring of the matter in a few words.	17 Mas que tudo isso seja dito apenas a título de lembrança, e, com estas palavras, voltemos à narração.
18 Eleazar, one of the principal scribes, an aged man, and of a well favoured countenance, was constrained to open his mouth, and to eat swine's flesh.	18 Havia certo homem já de idade avançada e de bela aparência, Eleazar, que se sentava no primeiro lugar entre os doutores da lei. Queriam coagi-lo a comer carne de porco, abrindo-lhe a boca à força.
19 But he, choosing rather to die gloriously, than to live stained with such an abomination, spit it forth, and came of his own accord to the torment,	19 Mas ele, cuspindo e preferindo morrer com honra a viver na infâmia,
20 As it behoved them to come, that are resolute to stand out against such things, as are not lawful for love of life to be tasted.	20 caminhou voluntariamente para o instrumento de tortura, como devem caminhar os que têm a coragem de rejeitar o que não é permitido comer por amor à vida.
21 But they that had the charge of that wicked feast, for the old acquaintance they had with the man, taking him aside, besought him to bring flesh of his own provision, such as was lawful for him to use, and make as if he did eat of the flesh taken from the sacrifice commanded by the king;	21 Ora, os encarregados desse ímpio banquete ritual, já desde muito tempo possuíam relações de amizade com Eleazar. Tomaram-no à parte e rogaram-lhe que fizesse trazer as carnes permitidas, que ele mesmo
22 That in so doing he might be delivered from death, and for the old friendship with them find favour.	22 Desse modo, ele seria preservado da morte, e granjearia sua benevolência em vista da antiga amizade.
23 But he began to consider discreetly, and as became his age, and the excellency of his ancient years, and the honour of his gray head, whereon was come, and his most honest education from a child, or rather the holy law made and given by God: therefore he answered accordingly, and willed them straightways to send him to the grave.	23 Mas Eleazar, tomando uma bela resolução, digna de sua idade, da autoridade que lhe conferia sua velhice, do prestígio que lhe outorgavam seus cabelos brancos, da vida íntegra conservada desde a infância, digna sobretudo das sagradas leis estabelecidas por Deus, preferiu ser conduzido à morte.
24 For it becometh not our age, said he, in any wise to dissemble, whereby many young persons might think that Eleazar, being fourscore years old and ten, were now gone to a strange religion;	24 Não é próprio da nossa idade, respondeu ele, usar de tal fingimento, para não acontecer que muitos jovens suspeitem de que Eleazar, aos noventa anos, tenha passado aos costumes estrangeiros.
25 And so they through mine hypocrisy, and desire to live a little time and a moment longer, should be deceived by me, and I get a stain to mine old age, and make it abominable.	25 Eles mesmos, após o meu gesto hipócrita, e por um pouco de vida, se deixariam arrastar por causa de mim, e isso seria para a minha velhice a desonra e a vergonha.
26 For though for the present time I should be delivered from the punishment of men: yet should I not escape the hand of the Almighty, neither alive, nor dead.	26 E mesmo se eu me livrasse agora dos castigos dos homens, não poderia escapar, nem vivo nem morto, das mãos do Todo-poderoso.
27 Wherefore now, manfully changing this life, I will shew myself such an one as mine age requireth,	27 Sendo assim, se eu morrer agora corajosamente, mostrar-me-ei digno de minha velhice, e terei deixado aos jovens um nobre exemplo de zelo generoso, segundo o qual é preciso dar a vida pelas santas e veneráveis leis.
28 And leave a notable example to such as be young to die willingly and courageously for the honourable and holy laws. And when he had said these words, immediately he went to the torment:	28 Ditas estas palavras, ele dirigiu-se ao suplício.
29 They that led him changing the good will they bare him a little before into hatred, because the foresaid speeches proceeded, as they thought, from a desperate mind.	29 Aqueles que o levavam transformaram em dureza a benevolência, que pouco antes haviam tido para com ele, julgando insensatas suas palavras.
30 But when he was ready to die with stripes, he groaned, and said, It is manifest unto the Lord, that hath the holy knowledge, that whereas I might have been delivered from death, I now endure sore pains in body by being beaten: but in soul am well content to suffer these things, because I fear him.	30 E quando ele estava prestes a morrer sob os golpes, exclamou entre suspiros: O Senhor que possui a ciência santíssima o vê: podendo eu livrar-me da morte, sofro em meu corpo os tormentos cruéis dos açoites,
31 And thus this man died, leaving his death for an example of a noble courage, and a memorial of virtue, not only unto young men, but unto all his nation.	31 Dessa maneira passou à outra vida, deixando com sua morte não somente aos jovens, mas também a toda a sua gente, um exemplo de coragem e um memorial de virtude.
