1 Not long after this the king sent an old man of Athens to compel the Jews to depart from the laws of their fathers, and not to live after the laws of God:	1 Dopo non molto tempo, il re inviò un vecchio ateniese affinché costringesse i Giudei ad abbandonare le leggi dei padri e a non vivere più secondo le leggi di Dio;
2 And to pollute also the temple in Jerusalem, and to call it the temple of Jupiter Olympius; and that in Garizim, of Jupiter the Defender of strangers, as they did desire that dwelt in the place.	2 profanasse il tempio di Gerusalemme e dedicasse questo a Giove Olimpio e quello sul Garizim, come avevano ottenuto gli abitanti del luogo, a Giove Ospitale.
3 The coming in of this mischief was sore and grievous to the people:	3 La violenza del male era per tutti dura e insopportabile.
4 For the temple was filled with riot and revelling by the Gentiles, who dallied with harlots, and had to do with women within the circuit of the holy places, and besides that brought in things that were not lawful.	4 Il tempio, infatti, era ripieno della dissolutezza e delle orge dei gentili, che vi si divertivano con le amiche e sotto i portici si accoppiavano alle donne, portandovi dentro anche cose sconvenienti.
5 The altar also was filled with profane things, which the law forbiddeth.	5 L'altare poi era ripieno di cose empie, proibite dalle leggi.
6 Neither was it lawful for a man to keep sabbath days or ancient fasts, or to profess himself at all to be a Jew.	6 Non si poteva né celebrare il sabato né osservare le feste dei padri né semplicemente confessare di essere giudeo.
7 And in the day of the king's birth every month they were brought by bitter constraint to eat of the sacrifices; and when the fast of Bacchus was kept, the Jews were compelled to go in procession to Bacchus, carrying ivy.	7 Si era condotti con dura forza ogni mese, nel giorno natalizio del re, al banchetto sacrificale e, al giungere delle feste dionisiache, si era costretti a scortare in corteo Dioniso, portando corone di edera.
8 Moreover there went out a decree to the neighbour cities of the heathen, by the suggestion of Ptolemee, against the Jews, that they should observe the same fashions, and be partakers of their sacrifices:	8 Per istigazione della gente di Tolemaide giunse poi un decreto affinché, nelle città ellenistiche circonvicine, vi si tenesse la medesima condotta contro i Giudei e li si facesse partecipare ai banchetti sacri,
9 And whoso would not conform themselves to the manners of the Gentiles should be put to death. Then might a man have seen the present misery.	9 uccidendo coloro che non si risolvevano a passare alle usanze ellenistiche. Era possibile, quindi, intravedere la sciagura che incombeva.
10 For there were two women brought, who had circumcised their children; whom when they had openly led round about the city, the babes handing at their breasts, they cast them down headlong from the wall.	10 Infatti due donne furono deferite per aver circonciso i loro figli. Appesi i bambini ai loro seni, le condussero in giro pubblicamente per la città e le precipitarono giù dalle mura.
11 And others, that had run together into caves near by, to keep the sabbath day secretly, being discovered by Philip, were all burnt together, because they made a conscience to help themselves for the honour of the most sacred day.	11 Altri poi, che si erano radunati nelle grotte vicine per celebrare segretamente il sabato, denunziati a Filippo, furono bruciati, poiché ebbero scrupolo di difendersi per rispetto di quel solennissimo giorno.
12 Now I beseech those that read this book, that they be not discouraged for these calamities, but that they judge those punishments not to be for destruction, but for a chastening of our nation.	12 Esorto quelli che s'imbatteranno in questo libro a non sconcertarsi per tali sventure e a pensare piuttosto che i castighi furono dati non per la rovina, ma per la correzione della nostra gente.
13 For it is a token of his great goodness, when wicked doers are not suffered any long time, but forthwith punished.	13 Poiché il non lasciare impuniti per molto tempo coloro che commettono empietà, ma colpirli subito con castighi, è segno di grande benevolenza.
14 For not as with other nations, whom the Lord patiently forbeareth to punish, till they be come to the fulness of their sins, so dealeth he with us,	14 Difatti il longanime Sovrano ha giudicato di comportarsi con noi non come con le altre genti, che egli aspetta fino a che siano giunte al colmo dei peccati per punirle.
15 Lest that, being come to the height of sin, afterwards he should take vengeance of us.	15 E ciò al fine di non punirci alla fine, quando i nostri peccati fossero giunti all'estremo.
16 And therefore he never withdraweth his mercy from us: and though he punish with adversity, yet doth he never forsake his people.	16 Perciò egli non ritira affatto da noi la sua misericordia; e, anche quando corregge con la sventura, non abbandona mai il suo popolo.
17 But let this that we at spoken be for a warning unto us. And now will we come to the declaring of the matter in a few words.	17 Ciò sia detto da noi solamente per avvertimento. Dopo di che ritorniamo alla narrazione.
18 Eleazar, one of the principal scribes, an aged man, and of a well favoured countenance, was constrained to open his mouth, and to eat swine's flesh.	18 Un certo Eleazaro, uno dei principali scribi, uomo già avanzato in età e molto bello d'aspetto, era forzato ad aprire la bocca per ingoiare carne suina.
19 But he, choosing rather to die gloriously, than to live stained with such an abomination, spit it forth, and came of his own accord to the torment,	19 Preferendo una morte gloriosa ad una vita ignominiosa, spontaneamente si avviò al supplizio,
20 As it behoved them to come, that are resolute to stand out against such things, as are not lawful for love of life to be tasted.	20 sputando il boccone e comportandosi come dovrebbero fare coloro che hanno il coraggio di rifiutare quei cibi di cui non è lecito nutrirsi per amore della vita.
21 But they that had the charge of that wicked feast, for the old acquaintance they had with the man, taking him aside, besought him to bring flesh of his own provision, such as was lawful for him to use, and make as if he did eat of the flesh taken from the sacrifice commanded by the king;	21 Allora quelli che erano preposti a quell'empio pasto sacrificale, conoscendo l'uomo da vecchio tempo, presolo in disparte, lo esortavano a farsi portare carni di cui gli era lecito servirsi e a prepararsele da se stesso, fingendo di mangiare le carni del sacrificio comandate dal re,
22 That in so doing he might be delivered from death, and for the old friendship with them find favour.	22 di modo che, agendo così, sarebbe stato liberato dalla morte e trattato con umanità per via della vecchia amicizia per essi.
23 But he began to consider discreetly, and as became his age, and the excellency of his ancient years, and the honour of his gray head, whereon was come, and his most honest education from a child, or rather the holy law made and given by God: therefore he answered accordingly, and willed them straightways to send him to the grave.	23 Egli, però, prese una nobile risoluzione, degna dell'età, del prestigio della vecchiaia, dell'acquisita e illustre canizie e dell'ottima condotta tenuta fin da fanciullo, ma soprattutto della santa legge stabilita da Dio, e rispose subito che lo spedissero al soggiorno dei morti.
24 For it becometh not our age, said he, in any wise to dissemble, whereby many young persons might think that Eleazar, being fourscore years old and ten, were now gone to a strange religion;	24 "Non è, infatti, degno della nostra età fingere, in modo che molti giovani, credendo che il novantenne Eleazaro sia passato alla moda straniera,
25 And so they through mine hypocrisy, and desire to live a little time and a moment longer, should be deceived by me, and I get a stain to mine old age, and make it abominable.	25 siano sviati anch'essi a causa mia, per la mia simulazione in vista di una breve ed esigua vita, e io mi acquisti vergogna e infamia per la vecchiaia.
26 For though for the present time I should be delivered from the punishment of men: yet should I not escape the hand of the Almighty, neither alive, nor dead.	26 Infatti, anche se al presente riuscissi a evitare il castigo degli uomini, vivendo o morendo non sfuggirei alle mani dell'Onnipotente.
27 Wherefore now, manfully changing this life, I will shew myself such an one as mine age requireth,	27 Per questo, abbandonando ora virilmente la vita, mi mostrerò degno della vecchiaia,
28 And leave a notable example to such as be young to die willingly and courageously for the honourable and holy laws. And when he had said these words, immediately he went to the torment:	28 lasciando ai giovani un nobile esempio di come si debba morire, coraggiosamente e nobilmente, per le auguste e sante leggi". Dette tali cose, si avviò prontamente al supplizio.
29 They that led him changing the good will they bare him a little before into hatred, because the foresaid speeches proceeded, as they thought, from a desperate mind.	29 Quelli che ve lo conducevano cambiarono in durezza la simpatia di poco prima, a causa delle parole da lui dette, credendo essi che fosse una pazzia.
30 But when he was ready to die with stripes, he groaned, and said, It is manifest unto the Lord, that hath the holy knowledge, that whereas I might have been delivered from death, I now endure sore pains in body by being beaten: but in soul am well content to suffer these things, because I fear him.	30 Egli però, stando sul punto di finire sotto i colpi, sospirando disse: "Al Signore, che possiede la santa scienza, è manifesto che, pur potendo scampare alla morte, sopporto nel corpo dure sofferenze mentre sono flagellato e che nell'anima le soffro volentieri per il suo timore".
31 And thus this man died, leaving his death for an example of a noble courage, and a memorial of virtue, not only unto young men, but unto all his nation.	31 In questo modo egli passò di vita, lasciando con la sua morte, non solo ai giovani, ma anche alla maggioranza della nazione, un esempio di nobiltà e un memoriale di virtù.
