1 It is also found in the records, that Jeremy the prophet commanded them that were carried away to take of the fire, as it hath been signified:	1 Nos documentos referentes ao profeta Jeremias lê-se que ele ordenou aos que eram levados para o cativeiro de (Babilônia) que tomassem o fogo, como já foi referido, e que lhes fez recomendações,
2 And how that the prophet, having given them the law, charged them not to forget the commandments of the Lord, and that they should not err in their minds, when they see images of silver and gold, with their ornaments.	2 ao dar-lhes um exemplar da lei, para que se não esquecessem dos preceitos do Senhor, nem se extraviassem, ao ver os ídolos de ouro e de prata e os seus adornos.
3 And with other such speeches exhorted he them, that the law should not depart from their hearts.	3 Dando-lhes outros avisos semelhantes, exortava-os a que não apartassem do seu coração a lei (de Deus).
4 It was also contained in the same writing, that the prophet, being warned of God, commanded the tabernacle and the ark to go with him, as he went forth into the mountain, where Moses climbed up, and saw the heritage of God.	4 Lia-se também nos mesmos escritos que este profeta, por uma ordem particular recebida de Deus, mandou que levassem com ele o tabernáculo e a arca, quando escalou o monte a que Moisés tinha subido para ver a herança de Deus.
5 And when Jeremy came thither, he found an hollow cave, wherein he laid the tabernacle, and the ark, and the altar of incense, and so stopped the door.	5 Tendo ali chegado, Jeremias achou uma caverna; meteu nela o tabernáculo, a arca e o altar dos perfumes, e tapou a entrada.
6 And some of those that followed him came to mark the way, but they could not find it.	6 Alguns dos que o seguiam voltaram de novo para marcar o caminho com sinais, mas não puderam encontrá-lo.
7 Which when Jeremy perceived, he blamed them, saying, As for that place, it shall be unknown until the time that God gather his people again together, and receive them unto mercy.	7 Quando Jeremias soube disto, repreendeu-os; Sabei, disse-lhes, que este lugar ficará incógnito, até que Deus reúna o seu povo disperso e use com ele de misericórdia.
8 Then shall the Lord shew them these things, and the glory of the Lord shall appear, and the cloud also, as it was shewed under Moses, and as when Solomon desired that the place might be honourably sanctified.	8 Então descobrirá o Senhor estas coisas, aparecerá a majestade do Senhor e ver-se-á uma nuvem, como apareceu no tempo de Moisés e como quando Salomão pediu que o templo fosse gloriosamente santificado.
9 It was also declared, that he being wise offered the sacrifice of dedication, and of the finishing of the temple.	9 Referia-se (nos documentos aludidos) que Salomão, na sua sabedoria, ofereceu o sacrifício da dedicação e acabamento do templo,
10 And as when Moses prayed unto the Lord, the fire came down from heaven, and consumed the sacrifices: even so prayed Solomon also, and the fire came down from heaven, and consumed the burnt offerings.	10 Assim como Moisés orou ao Senhor, e desceu fogo do céu que consumiu o holocausto, por semelhante modo também orou Salomão, e desceu fogo do céu que consumiu o holocausto.
11 And Moses said, Because the sin offering was not to be eaten, it was consumed.	11 Moisés disse; Por não ter sido comida a vítima oferecida pelo pecado, foi consumida (pelo fogo).
12 So Solomon kept those eight days.	12 Também Salomão celebrou durante oito dias a dedicação (do templo).
13 The same things also were reported in the writings and commentaries of Neemias; and how he founding a library gathered together the acts of the kings, and the prophets, and of David, and the epistles of the kings concerning the holy gifts.	13 Estas mesmas coisas se achavam nos escritos e memórias de Neemias, onde se lia que ele formou uma biblioteca, recolhendo os livros referentes aos reis e profetas, os de Davide e as cartas dos reis respeitantes ás oferendas.
14 In like manner also Judas gathered together all those things that were lost by reason of the war we had, and they remain with us,	14 Do mesmo modo também Judas Macabeu recolheu tudo o que se tinha perdido durante a guerra que nos sobreveio; (esta colecção) está nas nossas mãos.
15 Wherefore if ye have need thereof, send some to fetch them unto you.	15 Se precisais destes escritos, mandai pessoas que vo-los possam levar.
16 Whereas we then are about to celebrate the purification, we have written unto you, and ye shall do well, if ye keep the same days.	16 Estando para celebrar a purificação (do templo), escrevemos-vos a presente carta; fareis bem se celebrardes esta festa.
17 We hope also, that the God, that delivered all his people, and gave them all an heritage, and the kingdom, and the priesthood, and the sanctuary,	17 Entretanto esperamos que Deus, que livrou o seu povo e que restituiu a todos a herança, o reino, o sacerdócio e o templo,
18 As he promised in the law, will shortly have mercy upon us, and gather us together out of every land under heaven into the holy place: for he hath delivered us out of great troubles, and hath purified the place.	18 conforme o tinha prometido na lei, esperamos que cedo usará conosco de misericórdia e nos tomará a ajuntar de todos os países, que estão debaixo do céu, no seu santo lugar,
19 Now as concerning Judas Maccabeus, and his brethren, and the purification of the great temple, and the dedication of the altar,	19 pois que ele nos livrou já de grandes perigos e purificou o seu templo.
20 And the wars against Antiochus Epiphanes, and Eupator his son,	20 A história de Judas Macabeu e seus irmãos, a purificação do grande templo e a dedicação do altar,
21 And the manifest signs that came from heaven unto those that behaved themselves manfully to their honour for Judaism: so that, being but a few, they overcame the whole country, and chased barbarous multitudes,	21 as guerras contra Antíoco Epífanes e seu filho Eupator,
22 And recovered again the temple renowned all the world over, and freed the city, and upheld the laws which were going down, the Lord being gracious unto them with all favour:	22 as manifestações do céu a favor dos que pelejaram pelo judaísmo com valentia e zelo, os quais, sendo poucos, se tomaram senhores de todo o pais e puseram em fuga um grande número de bárbaros,
23 All these things, I say, being declared by Jason of Cyrene in five books, we will assay to abridge in one volume.	23 recobraram o templo famoso em todo o mundo, livraram a cidade da escravidão, restabeleceram as leis que iam ser abolidas, graças ao Senhor que lhes foi propício com evidentes provas da sua bondade,
24 For considering the infinite number, and the difficulty which they find that desire to look into the narrations of the story, for the variety of the matter,	24 tudo isto, que Jasão de Cirene escreveu em cinco livros, procuramos nós resumir num só volume.
25 We have been careful, that they that will read may have delight, and that they that are desirous to commit to memory might have ease, and that all into whose hands it comes might have profit.	25 Considerando a multidão de livros e a dificuldade que encontram os que querem aplicar-se às narrações das histórias, por causa da multidão dos sucessos,
26 Therefore to us, that have taken upon us this painful labour of abridging, it was not easy, but a matter of sweat and watching;	26 procurámos (ao escrever esta) dar agrado aos que a queiram ler, fazer com que os estudiosos possam mais facilmente retê-la na memória e tomá-la geralmente útil a todos os que a lerem.
27 Even as it is no ease unto him that prepareth a banquet, and seeketh the benefit of others: yet for the pleasuring of many we will undertake gladly this great pains;	27 Para nós, que empreendemos fazer este resumo, não é pequeno o trabalho, antes empresa cheia de vigílias e de suores.
28 Leaving to the author the exact handling of every particular, and labouring to follow the rules of an abridgement.	28 Como aqueles que preparam um banquete e procuram satisfazer o gosto dos outros, assim nós, para obter a gratidão de muitos, empreendemos de boa vontade este trabalho.
29 For as the master builder of a new house must care for the whole building; but he that undertaketh to set it out, and paint it, must seek out fit things for the adorning thereof: even so I think it is with us.	29 Deixando os pormenores de cada um dos factos aos autores (que os historiam), apenas nos aplicamos em resumi-los, segundo foi nossa tenção.
30 To stand upon every point, and go over things at large, and to be curious in particulars, belongeth to the first author of the story:	30 Assim como um arquitecto, que empreende edificar uma casa nova, deve pôr o cuidado em regular toda a sua fábrica, e o encarregado de a pintar e decorar há-de inquirir o que é acomodado para o seu ornato, da mesma sorte se deve julgar também de nós.
31 But to use brevity, and avoid much labouring of the work, is to be granted to him that will make an abridgment.	31 Porquanto, o autor duma história deve recolher as matérias e ordenar a narração, inquirindo cuidadosamente das circunstâncias particulares do que conta;
32 Here then will we begin the story: only adding thus much to that which hath been said, that it is a foolish thing to make a long prologue, and to be short in the story itself.	32 mas ao que faz um resumo, deve-se permitir que siga a brevidade, no que escreve, e evite dilatar-se na exposição completa dos factos.
	33 Comecemos, pois aqui a nossa narração; para exórdio basta o que temos dito: seria um absurdo sermos difusos no exórdio da história e sucintos no corpo dela.
