1 It is also found in the records, that Jeremy the prophet commanded them that were carried away to take of the fire, as it hath been signified:	1 « Negli scritti del profeta Geremia si trova che egli ordinò a quelli che trasmigravano di prendere il fuoco sacro, come si è detto. E quando diede questi ordini agli emigranti,
2 And how that the prophet, having given them the law, charged them not to forget the commandments of the Lord, and that they should not err in their minds, when they see images of silver and gold, with their ornaments.	2 diede loro pure la legge, affinchè non si dimenticassero dei comandamenti del Signore, e non traviassero colla mente alla vista degli idoli d'oro e d'argento e dei loro ornamenti.
3 And with other such speeches exhorted he them, that the law should not depart from their hearts.	3 E con avvertimenti simili li esortava a non allontanare la legge dal loro cuore.
4 It was also contained in the same writing, that the prophet, being warned of God, commanded the tabernacle and the ark to go with him, as he went forth into the mountain, where Moses climbed up, and saw the heritage of God.	4 E nella stessa scrittura c'era come il profeta, avuto un divino responso, ordinò che fossero portati dietro a lui il Tabernacolo e l'arca, finché non arrivò al monte sul quale ascese Mosè a vedere l'eredità del Signore.
5 And when Jeremy came thither, he found an hollow cave, wherein he laid the tabernacle, and the ark, and the altar of incense, and so stopped the door.	5 Giunto là, Geremia trovò una caverna, e vi nascose dentro il Tabernacolo, l'arca e l'altare degl'incensi, e ne ostruì l'entrata.
6 And some of those that followed him came to mark the way, but they could not find it.	6 Alcuni di quelli che lo seguivano, andarono poi insieme per notare il luogo, ma non poteron trovarlo.
7 Which when Jeremy perceived, he blamed them, saying, As for that place, it shall be unknown until the time that God gather his people again together, and receive them unto mercy.	7 Geremia, quando lo seppe, li riprese, e disse: « Il luogo sarà ignoto fino al tempo in cui Dio riunirà tutto il popolo e farà misericordia.
8 Then shall the Lord shew them these things, and the glory of the Lord shall appear, and the cloud also, as it was shewed under Moses, and as when Solomon desired that the place might be honourably sanctified.	8 Allora il Signore manifesterà tali cose, e apparirà la maestà del Signore, e vi sarà la nuvola, come fu veduta al tempo di Mosè e quando Salomone chiese che il tempio fosse consacrato al gran Dio.
9 It was also declared, that he being wise offered the sacrifice of dedication, and of the finishing of the temple.	9 Egli rivelò magnificamente la sapienza, e, pieno di sapienza, offerse il sacrifizio della dedicazione e del compimento del tempio.
10 And as when Moses prayed unto the Lord, the fire came down from heaven, and consumed the sacrifices: even so prayed Solomon also, and the fire came down from heaven, and consumed the burnt offerings.	10 E come Mosè pregò il Signore, e scese il fuoco dal cielo e consumò l'olocausto, così anche Salomone pregò, e il fuoco discese dal cielo e consumò l'olocausto.
11 And Moses said, Because the sin offering was not to be eaten, it was consumed.	11 E Mosè disse: « Siccome non è stato mangiato ciò che era offerto per il peccato, è stato consumato ».
12 So Solomon kept those eight days.	12 Similmente anche Salomone celebrò per otto giorni la dedicazione.
13 The same things also were reported in the writings and commentaries of Neemias; and how he founding a library gathered together the acts of the kings, and the prophets, and of David, and the epistles of the kings concerning the holy gifts.	13 Queste medesime cose eran portate negli scritti e nei commentari di Nehemia, il quale, quando fondò la biblioteca, raccolse dalle contrade i libri e dei profeti e di David, e le lettere dei re relative ai loro doni.
14 In like manner also Judas gathered together all those things that were lost by reason of the war we had, and they remain with us,	14 Similmente anche Giuda raccolse tutto quello che si era smarrito a causa della guerra da noi sostenuta, e tutto questo l'abbiamo nelle nostre mani.
15 Wherefore if ye have need thereof, send some to fetch them unto you.	15 Se voi dunque desiderate queste cose, mandate delle persone che ve le portino.
16 Whereas we then are about to celebrate the purification, we have written unto you, and ye shall do well, if ye keep the same days.	16 Essendo dunque per celebrare la festa della purificazione, noi vi abbiamo scritto, e voi farete bene a solennizzare questi giorni.
17 We hope also, that the God, that delivered all his people, and gave them all an heritage, and the kingdom, and the priesthood, and the sanctuary,	17 E Dio, il quale ha liberato il suo popolo e ha reso a tutti l'eredità, e il regno e il sacerdozio e il santuario,
18 As he promised in the law, will shortly have mercy upon us, and gather us together out of every land under heaven into the holy place: for he hath delivered us out of great troubles, and hath purified the place.	18 come promise nella legge, speriamo che ben presto avrà pietà di noi, e ci radunerà (da tutte le regioni che sono) sotto il cielo, nel luogo santo;
19 Now as concerning Judas Maccabeus, and his brethren, and the purification of the great temple, and the dedication of the altar,	19 perchè egli ci ha liberati da grandi pericoli, ed ha purificato il luogo (santo) ».
20 And the wars against Antiochus Epiphanes, and Eupator his son,	20 Quello che riguarda Giuda Maccabeo e i suoi fratelli, e la purificazione del gran tempio, e la dedicazione dell'altare,
21 And the manifest signs that came from heaven unto those that behaved themselves manfully to their honour for Judaism: so that, being but a few, they overcame the whole country, and chased barbarous multitudes,	21 e le guerre avvenute sotto Antioco l'illustre, e sotto il suo figlio Eupatore,
22 And recovered again the temple renowned all the world over, and freed the city, and upheld the laws which were going down, the Lord being gracious unto them with all favour:	22 e le apparizioni venute dal cielo in favore di quelli che da eroi combatterono per i Giuda, in modo che, sebbene pochi di numero, riconquistarono tutto il paese e misero in fuga la moltitudine doi barbari,
23 All these things, I say, being declared by Jason of Cyrene in five books, we will assay to abridge in one volume.	23 e ricuperarono il tempio famosissimo in tutto il mondo, e liberarono la città, e ristabilirono le leggi che erano abolite, avendoli il Signore favoriti con tutta benevolenza,
24 For considering the infinite number, and the difficulty which they find that desire to look into the narrations of the story, for the variety of the matter,	24 queste medesime cose, esposte da Giasone di Cirene in cinque libri, noi abbiamo tentato di compendiarle in un solo volume.
25 We have been careful, that they that will read may have delight, and that they that are desirous to commit to memory might have ease, and that all into whose hands it comes might have profit.	25 Considerando infatti la moltitudine dei libri e le difficoltà per chi voglia seguire i racconti storici, a causa della moltiplicità delle cose,
26 Therefore to us, that have taken upon us this painful labour of abridging, it was not easy, but a matter of sweat and watching;	26 abbiamo procurato, per quelli che voglion leggere, che ci sia il diletto dell'animo, per gli studiosi, che possano più facilmente imparare a memoria, e che ci sia dell'utilità per tutti quelli che leggono.
27 Even as it is no ease unto him that prepareth a banquet, and seeketh the benefit of others: yet for the pleasuring of many we will undertake gladly this great pains;	27 Per noi poi che ci siamo addossati la fatica di compendiare, il lavoro non è facile, anzi è un'impresa piena di veglie e di sudori quella che abbiamo assunta;
28 Leaving to the author the exact handling of every particular, and labouring to follow the rules of an abridgement.	28 ma come coloro che preparano un banchetto cercan di soddisfare i gusti degli altri, per la riconoscenza di molti con piacere sopportiamo questa fatica.
29 For as the master builder of a new house must care for the whole building; but he that undertaketh to set it out, and paint it, must seek out fit things for the adorning thereof: even so I think it is with us.	29 Lasciando pertanto l'accuratezza dei particolari agli autori, noi ci sforzeremo di dare il compendio secondo il piano propostoci.
30 To stand upon every point, and go over things at large, and to be curious in particulars, belongeth to the first author of the story:	30 Come l'architetto che fa una nuova casa deve aver cura di tutta la fabbrica e invece quello che s'incarica di decorarla deve guardare a ciò che è di ornamento, così deve giudicarsi di noi.
31 But to use brevity, and avoid much labouring of the work, is to be granted to him that will make an abridgment.	31 Infatti raccogliere ciò che sa, ordinare il racconto, ricercare con molta diligenza tutti i singoli particolari è dovere dell'autore d'una storia,
32 Here then will we begin the story: only adding thus much to that which hath been said, that it is a foolish thing to make a long prologue, and to be short in the story itself.	32 ma a chi fa un compendio si deve concedere di attenersi alla brevità del dire, evitando lo sviluppo dei fatti.
	33 Qui dunque eominceremo la narrazione, basti aver ciò accennato, come prefazione, chè sarebbe follia diffondersi avanti la storia, e poi nella storia stessa esser concisi.
