1 After three years was Judas informed, that Demetrius the son of Seleucus, having entered by the haven of Tripolis with a great power and navy,	1 - Ma dopo tre anni, Giuda ed i suoi seppero che Demetrio figlio di Seleuco, con grand’esercito e navi, attraverso il porto di Tripoli, aveva occupato buone posizioni,
2 Had taken the country, and killed Antiochus, and Lysias his protector.	2 e teneva que' luoghi contro Antioco e Lisia suo capitano.
3 Now one Alcimus, who had been high priest, and had defiled himself wilfully in the times of their mingling with the Gentiles, seeing that by no means he could save himself, nor have any more access to the holy altar,	3 Ora, un certo Alcimo, che era stato sommo sacerdote ma s’era volontariamente coinquinato [col pagani] a' tempi della contaminazione, vedendo che non v’era per lui più bene, nè possibilità di risalire all’altare,
4 Came to king Demetrius in the hundred and one and fiftieth year, presenting unto him a crown of gold, and a palm, and also of the boughs which were used solemnly in the temple: and so that day he held his peace.	4 venne al re Demetrio, l’anno centocinquanta, offrendogli una corona d’oro, una palma, e dei ramoscelli che parevano esser appartenuti al tempio; e per quel giorno tacque.
5 Howbeit having gotten opportunity to further his foolish enterprize, and being called into counsel by Demetrius, and asked how the Jews stood affected, and what they intended, he answered thereunto:	5 Ma chiamato a consiglio da Demetrio, ed interrogato sulle cose de' Giudèi e sulle loro intenzioni, còlto il momento favorevole alla sua insania,
6 Those of the Jews that he called Assideans, whose captain is Judas Maccabeus, nourish war and are seditious, and will not let the rest be in peace.	6 rispose: « Quelli tra i Giudei che son chiamati Asidei, a capo dei quali è Giuda Maccabeo, mantengon le guerre, muovono le sedizioni, e non lasciano che il regno stia in quiete.
7 Therefore I, being deprived of mine ancestors' honour, I mean the high priesthood, am now come hither:	7 Anch'io infatti, defraudato della gloria degli avi, voglio dire del sommo sacerdozio, son venuto qui ;
8 First, verily for the unfeigned care I have of things pertaining to the king; and secondly, even for that I intend the good of mine own countrymen: for all our nation is in no small misery through the unadvised dealing of them aforersaid.	8 prima, certo, per serbarmi fedele In servizio del re; poi anche per provvedere ai miei connazionali; perchè dalla malignità di quelli proviene non piccolo danno a tutta la nostra nazione. •
9 Wherefore, O king, seeing knowest all these things, be careful for the country, and our nation, which is pressed on every side, according to the clemency that thou readily shewest unto all.	9 Ti prego, o re, verificata ciascuna di queste cose, provvedi al luogo ed alla gente, secondo la tua benevolenza a tutti ben nota.
10 For as long as Judas liveth, it is not possible that the state should be quiet.	10 Ma finché Giuda sopravvivera, sarà impossibile aver pace».
11 This was no sooner spoken of him, but others of the king's friends, being maliciously set against Judas, did more incense Demetrius.	11 Ciò detto da lui, anche gli altri amici del re che avevano malanimo contro Giuda, infiammarono Demetrio.
12 And forthwith calling Nicanor, who had been master of the elephants, and making him governor over Judea, he sent him forth,	12 Il quale senza indugio inandò governatore e duce in Giudea Nicanore condottiero degli elefanti,
13 Commanding him to slay Judas, and to scatter them that were with him, and to make Alcimus high priest of the great temple.	13 dandogli ordine di far prigioniero lo stesso Giuda, disperdere quelli che lo seguivano, e porre Alcimo a sommo sacerdote del gran tempio,
14 Then the heathen, that had fled out of Judea from Judas, came to Nicanor by flocks, thinking the harm and calamities ot the Jews to be their welfare.	14 Allora i Gentili che eran fuggiti dalla Giudea per paura di Giuda, a torme s’univano a Nicanore, considerando come proprie fortune le miserie e calamità dei Giudei.
15 Now when the Jews heard of Nicanor's coming, and that the heathen were up against them, they cast earth upon their heads, and made supplication to him that had established his people for ever, and who always helpeth his portion with manifestation of his presence.	15 Quando i Giudei seppero la venuta di Nicanore e la lega delle nazioni, cosparsi di cenere pregavano colui che si elesse il suo popolo, e con manifesti segni protegge la sua porzione a custodirli in eterno.
16 So at the commandment of the captain they removed straightways from thence, and came near unto them at the town of Dessau.	16 Al comando poi del loro capitano, subito di lì si mossero, e si riunirono al castello di Dessau.
17 Now Simon, Judas' brother, had joined battle with Nicanor, but was somewhat discomfited through the sudden silence of his enemies.	17 Simone fratello di Giuda s’era azzuffato con Nicanore, ma rimase spaventato al repentino arrivo de'nemici.
18 Nevertheless Nicanor, hearing of the manliness of them that were with Judas, and the courageousness that they had to fight for their country, durst not try the matter by the sword.	18 Nicanore però, conoscendo il valore de’ seguaci di Giuda, e la forza d'animo con la quale combattevano per la patria, temeva di venire alla prova del sangue.
19 Wherefore he sent Posidonius, and Theodotus, and Mattathias, to make peace.	19 Mandò avanti dunque Posidonio, Teodosio e Mattia, a chiedere e ricevere pace.
20 So when they had taken long advisement thereupon, and the captain had made the multitude acquainted therewith, and it appeared that they were all of one mind, they consented to the covenants,	20 Ed avendo [i Giudei] intorno a ciò tenuto lungamente consiglio, ed avendone lo stesso [Giuda] riferito all’esercito, fu parere di tutti che si accettasse la pace.
21 And appointed a day to meet in together by themselves: and when the day came, and stools were set for either of them,	21 Venne dunque stabilito un giorno perchè [i due capi] trattassero fra loro soli, e furon portate e messe a posto per ciascuno le sedie.
22 Ludas placed armed men ready in convenient places, lest some treachery should be suddenly practised by the enemies: so they made a peaceable conference.	22 Giuda però dette ordine che degli armati stessero in luoghi adatti, acciò i nemici non facessero a un tratto qualche malanno; e tennero fra loro il conveniente colloquio.
23 Now Nicanor abode in Jerusalem, and did no hurt, but sent away the people that came flocking unto him.	23 Nicanore dunque restò in Gerusalemme; niente fece di male, e rimandò a mano a mano le turbe che gli s’erano aggiunte.
24 And he would not willingly have Judas out of his sight: for he love the man from his heart	24 Si teneva sempre caro Giuda, ed aveva per lui simpatia.
25 He prayed him also to take a wife, and to beget children: so he married, was quiet, and took part of this life.	25 Gli consigliò di prender moglie, per aver figli. E quegli fece le nozze, stette in pace, e vivevano d'accordo.
26 But Alcimus, perceiving the love that was betwixt them, and considering the covenants that were made, came to Demetrius, and told him that Nicanor was not well affected toward the state; for that he had ordained Judas, a traitor to his realm, to be the king's successor.	26 Ma Alcimo, vedendo la loro scambievole amicizia, ed i patti corsi tra loro, venne a Demetrio, e gli disse che Nicanore parteggiava a favore degli estranei e destinava a succedergli Giuda l'insidiatore del regno.
27 Then the king being in a rage, and provoked with the accusations of the most wicked man, wrote to Nicanor, signifying that he was much displeased with the covenants, and commanding him that he should send Maccabeus prisoner in all haste unto Antioch.	27 Allora il re esacerbato, ed irritato per queste pessime suggestioni, scrisse a Nicanore dicendogli che non poteva sopportare questo patto d'amicizia, e che gli comandava di mandargli al più presto in Antiochia il Maccabeo prigioniero.
28 When this came to Nicanor's hearing, he was much confounded in himself, and took it grievously that he should make void the articles which were agreed upon, the man being in no fault.	28 Ciò saputo, Nicanore ne fu costernato, e non sapeva adattarsi ad annullare i patti convenuti, senza che Giuda in nulla l’avesse offeso.
29 But because there was no dealing against the king, he watched his time to accomplish this thing by policy.	29 Ma non potendo opporsi al re, studiava l’occasione per eseguire il comando di lui.
30 Notwithstanding, when Maccabeus saw that Nicanor began to be churlish unto him, and that he entreated him more roughly than he was wont, perceiving that such sour behaviour came not of good, he gathered together not a few of his men, and withdrew himself from Nicanor.	30 Ma il Maccabeo, vedendo che Nicanore stava con lui più sostenuto e ne’ consueti incontri gli si mostrava più duro, comprendendo che questa durezza non presagiva in bene, radunati alcuni del suoi, non si fece più vedere da Nicanore.
31 But the other, knowing that he was notably prevented by Judas' policy, came into the great and holy temple, and commanded the priests, that were offering their usual sacrifices, to deliver him the man.	31 Questi quando si seppe da lui bellamente prevenuto, venne al grandissimo e santissimo tempio, ed ai sacerdoti che offerivano i consueti sacrifizi comandò di consegnargli Giuda.
32 And when they sware that they could not tell where the man was whom he sought,	32 Ed affermando quelli con giuramento di non sapere ove fosse colui che egli cercava, stendendo la mano verso il tempio,
33 He stretched out his right hand toward the temple, and made an oath in this manner: If ye will not deliver me Judas as a prisoner, I will lay this temple of God even with the ground, and I will break down the altar, and erect a notable temple unto Bacchus.	33 disse e giurò: « Se non mi consegnerete prigioniero Giuda, spianerò al suolo questo tempio di Dio, scalzerò l’altare e dedicherò questo tempio al padre Bacco ».
34 After these words he departed. Then the priests lifted up their hands toward heaven, and besought him that was ever a defender of their nation, saying in this manner;	34 E ciò detto se ne andò. Allora i sacerdoti, levando al cielo le mani, invocavano colui che sempre era stato il difensore della loro nazione, e dicevano:
35 Thou, O Lord of all things, who hast need of nothing, wast pleased that the temple of thine habitation should be among us:	35 «Tu, Signore d’ogni cosa, che di nessuno hai bisogno, volesti che questo tempio fosse la sua abitazione fra noi.
36 Therefore now, O holy Lord of all holiness, keep this house ever undefiled, which lately was cleansed, and stop every unrighteous mouth.	36 Ora dunque, o Santo dei santi, o Signore di tutti, conserva in eterno senza macchia questa casa, la quale appena ora è stata mondata ».
37 Now was there accused unto Nicanor one Razis, one of the elders of Jerusalem, a lover of his countrymen, and a man of very good report, who for his kindness was called a father of the Jews.	37 Fu poi denunziato a Nicanore un certo Razia, dei seniori di Gerusalemme, uomo amante della città, e di buona fama, che per la sua bontà veniva chiamato padre de' Giudei.
38 For in the former times, when they mingled not themselves with the Gentiles, he had been accused of Judaism, and did boldly jeopard his body and life with all vehemency for the religion of the Jews.	38 Egli nel lungo periodo della separazione [dai pagani] si serbò fedele al giudaismo, pronto a dar anima e corpo pur di non cedere.
39 So Nicanor, willing to declare the hate that he bare unto the Jews, sent above five hundred men of war to take him:	39 Volendo dunque Nicanore manifestare Podio che aveva contro i Giudei, mandò cinquecento soldati ad impadronirsi di Razia ;
40 For he thought by taking him to do the Jews much hurt.	40 pensava infatti che la sua perdita sarebbe stata per i Giudei una grandissima iattura.
41 Now when the multitude would have taken the tower, and violently broken into the outer door, and bade that fire should be brought to burn it, he being ready to be taken on every side fell upon his sword;	41 Or mentre quella masnada tentava di entrare nella casa di lui, abbattere la porta, e mettervi il fuoco, stando egli per esser preso, si ferì con la spada»
42 Choosing rather to die manfully, than to come into the hands of the wicked, to be abused otherwise than beseemed his noble birth:	42 preferendo morire da forte piuttosto che soggiacere ai peccatori, ed esser trattato con ingiuria indegna della sua nascita.
43 But missing his stroke through haste, the multitude also rushing within the doors, he ran boldly up to the wall, and cast himself down manfully among the thickest of them.	43 Ma, per la fretta, non essendosi colpito diritto, stando la turba per irrompere entro le porte, salito audacemente sui muro, di il coraggiosamente si precipitò addosso agli assalitori ;
44 But they quickly giving back, and a space being made, he fell down into the midst of the void place.	44 e tirandosi questi velocemente da parte per dar posto alla sua caduta, battè il capo nel mezzo.
45 Nevertheless, while there was yet breath within him, being inflamed with anger, he rose up; and though his blood gushed out like spouts of water, and his wounds were grievous, yet he ran through the midst of the throng; and standing upon a steep rock,	45 Pure, respirando ancora, si rialzò furiosamente, e quantunque grondante sangue e fosse rotto da mortali ferite, traversò a corsa la turba, e salito su un masso isolato, perso ormai tutto il sangue, con ambe le mani si strappò gl'intestini, e li gettò sulla turba, pregando il padrone della vita, e dello spirito a renderglieli poi di nuovo. E cosi mori.
46 When as his blood was now quite gone, he plucked out his bowels, and taking them in both his hands, he cast them upon the throng, and calling upon the Lord of life and spirit to restore him those again, he thus died.
