2 Maccabees 14

1 After three years was Judas informed, that Demetrius the son of Seleucus, having entered by the haven of Tripolis with a great power and navy,	1 Après un intervalle de trois ans, Judas et ses compagnons apprirent que Démétrius, fils deSéleucus, ayant abordé au port de Tripoli avec une forte armée et une flotte,
2 Had taken the country, and killed Antiochus, and Lysias his protector.	2 s'était emparé du pays et avait fait périr Antiochus et son tuteur Lysias.
3 Now one Alcimus, who had been high priest, and had defiled himself wilfully in the times of their mingling with the Gentiles, seeing that by no means he could save himself, nor have any more access to the holy altar,	3 Un certain Alkime, précédemment devenu grand prêtre, mais qui s'était volontairementsouillé au temps de la révolte, comprenant qu'il n'y avait pour lui de salut en aucune façon, ni désormais d'accèspossible au saint autel,
4 Came to king Demetrius in the hundred and one and fiftieth year, presenting unto him a crown of gold, and a palm, and also of the boughs which were used solemnly in the temple: and so that day he held his peace.	4 vint trouver le roi Démétrius vers l'an un, et lui offrit une couronne d'or avec une palme et, deplus, des rameaux d'olivier dus selon l'usage par le Temple; et, ce jour-là, il ne fit rien de plus.
5 Howbeit having gotten opportunity to further his foolish enterprize, and being called into counsel by Demetrius, and asked how the Jews stood affected, and what they intended, he answered thereunto:	5 Mais il trouva une occasion complice de sa démence quand, l'ayant appelé dans son conseil,Démétrius l'interrogea sur les dispositions et les desseins des Juifs. Il répondit:
6 Those of the Jews that he called Assideans, whose captain is Judas Maccabeus, nourish war and are seditious, and will not let the rest be in peace.	6 "Ceux des Juifs qu'on appelle Assidéens, dont Judas Maccabée a pris la direction, fomententla guerre et les séditions, ne laissant pas le royaume jouir du calme.
7 Therefore I, being deprived of mine ancestors' honour, I mean the high priesthood, am now come hither:	7 C'est pourquoi, ayant été dépouillé de ma dignité héréditaire, je veux dire du souverainpontificat, je suis venu ici,
8 First, verily for the unfeigned care I have of things pertaining to the king; and secondly, even for that I intend the good of mine own countrymen: for all our nation is in no small misery through the unadvised dealing of them aforersaid.	8 d'abord avec le souci sincère des intérêts du roi, ensuite en considération de nos concitoyens,car la déraison de ceux que j'ai nommés plonge toute notre race dans une grande infortune.
9 Wherefore, O king, seeing knowest all these things, be careful for the country, and our nation, which is pressed on every side, according to the clemency that thou readily shewest unto all.	9 Toi donc, ô roi, quand tu auras pris connaissance de chacun de ces griefs, daigne pourvoir ausalut de notre pays et de notre nation menacée de toutes parts, suivant cette bienfaisance affable que tutémoignes à tout le monde,
10 For as long as Judas liveth, it is not possible that the state should be quiet.	10 car tant que Judas sera en vie, il sera impossible à l'Etat de goûter la paix."
11 This was no sooner spoken of him, but others of the king's friends, being maliciously set against Judas, did more incense Demetrius.	11 Dès qu'il eut parlé de la sorte, les autres amis du roi, hostiles à l'action de Judas,s'empressèrent d'enflammer Démétrius.
12 And forthwith calling Nicanor, who had been master of the elephants, and making him governor over Judea, he sent him forth,	12 Ayant aussitôt fixé son choix sur Nikanor, qui était devenu éléphantarque, il le promutstratège de Judée et le fit partir
13 Commanding him to slay Judas, and to scatter them that were with him, and to make Alcimus high priest of the great temple.	13 avec l'ordre de faire périr Judas, de disperser ceux qui étaient avec lui et d'introniser Alkimegrand prêtre du plus grand des sanctuaires.
14 Then the heathen, that had fled out of Judea from Judas, came to Nicanor by flocks, thinking the harm and calamities ot the Jews to be their welfare.	14 Quant aux païens de Judée qui avaient fui devant Judas, ils se rassemblèrent par troupesautour de Nikanor, pensant bien que l'infortune et le malheur des Juifs tourneraient à leur propre avantage.
15 Now when the Jews heard of Nicanor's coming, and that the heathen were up against them, they cast earth upon their heads, and made supplication to him that had established his people for ever, and who always helpeth his portion with manifestation of his presence.	15 Informés de l'arrivée de Nikanor et de l'agression des païens, les Juifs répandirent sur eux dela poussière et implorèrent Celui qui avait constitué son peuple pour l'éternité et qui ne manquait jamais desecourir son propre héritage avec des signes manifestes.
16 So at the commandment of the captain they removed straightways from thence, and came near unto them at the town of Dessau.	16 Sur l'ordre de leur chef, ils partirent aussitôt du lieu où ils se trouvaient et en vinrent auxmains avec eux au bourg de Dessau.
17 Now Simon, Judas' brother, had joined battle with Nicanor, but was somewhat discomfited through the sudden silence of his enemies.	17 Simon, frère de Judas, avait engagé le combat avec Nikanor, mais à cause de l'arrivée subitedes adversaires, il avait subi un léger échec.
18 Nevertheless Nicanor, hearing of the manliness of them that were with Judas, and the courageousness that they had to fight for their country, durst not try the matter by the sword.	18 Toutefois, apprenant quelle était la valeur de Judas et de ses compagnons, leur assurancedans les combats livrés pour la patrie, Nikanor craignit de s'en remettre au jugement par le sang.
19 Wherefore he sent Posidonius, and Theodotus, and Mattathias, to make peace.	19 Aussi envoya-t-il Posidonius, Théodote et Mattathias pour tendre la main aux Juifs etrecevoir la leur.
20 So when they had taken long advisement thereupon, and the captain had made the multitude acquainted therewith, and it appeared that they were all of one mind, they consented to the covenants,	20 Après un examen approfondi des propositions, le chef les communiqua aux troupes, et, lesavis ayant été unanimes, elles manifestèrent leur assentiment au traité.
21 And appointed a day to meet in together by themselves: and when the day came, and stools were set for either of them,	21 On fixa un jour où les chefs s'aboucheraient en particulier. De part et d'autre s'avança unvéhicule; on plaça des sièges d'honneur.
22 Ludas placed armed men ready in convenient places, lest some treachery should be suddenly practised by the enemies: so they made a peaceable conference.	22 Judas avait aposté aux endroits favorables des gens en armes, prêts à intervenir en cas deperfidie soudaine de la part des ennemis. Dans leur entretien ils se mirent d'accord.
23 Now Nicanor abode in Jerusalem, and did no hurt, but sent away the people that came flocking unto him.	23 Nikanor séjourna à Jérusalem sans y rien faire de déplacé. Au contraire, il renvoya cesfoules qui, par bandes, s'étaient groupées autour de lui.
24 And he would not willingly have Judas out of his sight: for he love the man from his heart	24 Il avait sans cesse Judas devant les yeux, éprouvant pour cet homme une inclination decoeur.
25 He prayed him also to take a wife, and to beget children: so he married, was quiet, and took part of this life.	25 Il l'engagea à se marier et à avoir des enfants. Judas se maria, goûta la tranquillité, jouit de lavie.
26 But Alcimus, perceiving the love that was betwixt them, and considering the covenants that were made, came to Demetrius, and told him that Nicanor was not well affected toward the state; for that he had ordained Judas, a traitor to his realm, to be the king's successor.	26 Alkime, voyant leur bonne entente, et s'étant procuré une copie du traité conclu, s'en vintchez Démétrius et lui dit que Nikanor avait des idées contraires aux intérêts de l'Etat, car l'adversaire même deson royaume, Judas, il l'avait promu diadoque.
27 Then the king being in a rage, and provoked with the accusations of the most wicked man, wrote to Nicanor, signifying that he was much displeased with the covenants, and commanding him that he should send Maccabeus prisoner in all haste unto Antioch.	27 Le roi entra en fureur et, excité par les calomnies de ce misérable, il écrivit à Nikanor, luidéclarant qu'il éprouvait un grand déplaisir de ces conventions et lui donnant l'ordre d'envoyer sans retard àAntioche le Maccabée chargé de chaînes.
28 When this came to Nicanor's hearing, he was much confounded in himself, and took it grievously that he should make void the articles which were agreed upon, the man being in no fault.	28 Au reçu de ces lignes, Nikanor fut bouleversé, car il lui en coûtait de violer les conventionsavec un homme qui n'avait commis aucune injustice.
29 But because there was no dealing against the king, he watched his time to accomplish this thing by policy.	29 Mais comme il n'était pas facile de s'opposer au roi, il épiait une occasion favorable pouraccomplir cet ordre au moyen d'un stratagème.
30 Notwithstanding, when Maccabeus saw that Nicanor began to be churlish unto him, and that he entreated him more roughly than he was wont, perceiving that such sour behaviour came not of good, he gathered together not a few of his men, and withdrew himself from Nicanor.	30 De son côté, Maccabée, remarquant que Nikanor se comportait plus sèchement à son égardet que son abord ordinaire se faisait plus rude, pensa qu'une telle sévérité ne présageait rien de très bon. Ilrassembla donc un grand nombre de ses partisans et se déroba à Nikanor.
31 But the other, knowing that he was notably prevented by Judas' policy, came into the great and holy temple, and commanded the priests, that were offering their usual sacrifices, to deliver him the man.	31 Quand l'autre reconnut qu'il avait été joué de belle manière par cet homme, il se rendit auSanctuaire très grand et saint pendant que les prêtres offraient les sacrifices accoutumés, et commanda de luilivrer cet homme.
32 And when they sware that they could not tell where the man was whom he sought,	32 Comme ils assuraient avec serment qu'ils ne savaient où était l'homme qu'il cherchait,
33 He stretched out his right hand toward the temple, and made an oath in this manner: If ye will not deliver me Judas as a prisoner, I will lay this temple of God even with the ground, and I will break down the altar, and erect a notable temple unto Bacchus.	33 Nikanor leva la main droite vers le Temple et affirma avec serment: "Si vous ne me livrezpas Judas enchaîné, je raserai cette demeure de Dieu, je détruirai l'autel, et, au même endroit, j'élèverai àDionysos un sanctuaire splendide."
34 After these words he departed. Then the priests lifted up their hands toward heaven, and besought him that was ever a defender of their nation, saying in this manner;	34 Sur de telles paroles, il se retira. Mais les prêtres tendirent de leur côté les mains vers le ciel,implorant en ces termes Celui qui a toujours combattu pour notre nation:
35 Thou, O Lord of all things, who hast need of nothing, wast pleased that the temple of thine habitation should be among us:	35 "O toi Seigneur, qui n'as besoin de rien, il t'a plu que le Temple où tu habites se trouve aumilieu de nous.
36 Therefore now, O holy Lord of all holiness, keep this house ever undefiled, which lately was cleansed, and stop every unrighteous mouth.	36 Maintenant donc, Seigneur saint de toute sainteté, préserve pour jamais de toute profanationcette Maison qui vient d'être purifiée."
37 Now was there accused unto Nicanor one Razis, one of the elders of Jerusalem, a lover of his countrymen, and a man of very good report, who for his kindness was called a father of the Jews.	37 On dénonça alors à Nikanor un des anciens de Jérusalem nommé Razis, homme zélé pourses concitoyens, jouissant d'un excellent renom et qu'on appelait Père des Juifs à cause de son affection pour eux.
38 For in the former times, when they mingled not themselves with the Gentiles, he had been accused of Judaism, and did boldly jeopard his body and life with all vehemency for the religion of the Jews.	38 Inculpé de Judaïsme dans les premiers temps de la révolte, il avait exposé avec toute laconstance possible son corps et sa vie pour le Judaïsme.
39 So Nicanor, willing to declare the hate that he bare unto the Jews, sent above five hundred men of war to take him:	39 En vue de montrer la malveillance qu'il nourrissait à l'égard des Juifs, Nikanor envoya plusde 500 soldats pour l'arrêter,
40 For he thought by taking him to do the Jews much hurt.	40 car il ne doutait pas que faire disparaître cet homme ne fût un grand coup porté aux Juifs.
41 Now when the multitude would have taken the tower, and violently broken into the outer door, and bade that fire should be brought to burn it, he being ready to be taken on every side fell upon his sword;	41 Comme ces troupes étaient sur le point de s'emparer de la tour et forçaient le porche, l'ordreétant donné de mettre le feu et de brûler les portes, Razis, cerné de toutes parts, dirigea son épée contre lui-même;
42 Choosing rather to die manfully, than to come into the hands of the wicked, to be abused otherwise than beseemed his noble birth:	42 il choisit noblement de mourir plutôt que de tomber entre des mains criminelles et de subirdes outrages indignes de sa noblesse.
43 But missing his stroke through haste, the multitude also rushing within the doors, he ran boldly up to the wall, and cast himself down manfully among the thickest of them.	43 Son coup ayant manqué le bon endroit, dans la hâte du combat, et les troupes se ruant àl'intérieur des portes, il courut allègrement en haut de la muraille et se précipita avec intrépidité sur la foule.
44 But they quickly giving back, and a space being made, he fell down into the midst of the void place.	44 Tous s'étant reculés aussitôt, il s'en vint choir au milieu de l'espace vide.
45 Nevertheless, while there was yet breath within him, being inflamed with anger, he rose up; and though his blood gushed out like spouts of water, and his wounds were grievous, yet he ran through the midst of the throng; and standing upon a steep rock,	45 Respirant encore, et enflammé d'ardeur, il se releva tout ruisselant de sang et, malgré de trèsdouloureuses blessures, il traversa la foule en courant. Enfin, debout sur une roche escarpée,
46 When as his blood was now quite gone, he plucked out his bowels, and taking them in both his hands, he cast them upon the throng, and calling upon the Lord of life and spirit to restore him those again, he thus died.	46 et déjà tout à fait exsangue, il s'arracha les entrailles et, les prenant à deux mains, il lesprojeta sur la foule, priant le maître de la vie et de l'esprit de les lui rendre un jour. Ce fut ainsi qu'il mourut.
