1 After three years was Judas informed, that Demetrius the son of Seleucus, having entered by the haven of Tripolis with a great power and navy,	1 Al cabo de tres años, Judas y sus hombres recibieron la noticia de que Demetrio, el hijo de Seleuco, había atracado en el puerto de Trípoli con un poderoso ejército y una flota,
2 Had taken the country, and killed Antiochus, and Lysias his protector.	2 adueñándose del país y haciendo ejecutar a Antíoco y a su tutor Lisias.
3 Now one Alcimus, who had been high priest, and had defiled himself wilfully in the times of their mingling with the Gentiles, seeing that by no means he could save himself, nor have any more access to the holy altar,	3 Un cierto Alcimo, que antes había sido Sumo Sacerdote, pero que se había contaminado voluntariamente en el tiempo de la ruptura con el paganismo, comprendiendo que él ya no podía rehabilitarse ni acceder al altar sagrado,
4 Came to king Demetrius in the hundred and one and fiftieth year, presenting unto him a crown of gold, and a palm, and also of the boughs which were used solemnly in the temple: and so that day he held his peace.	4 fue a ver al rey Demetrio hacia el año ciento cincuenta y uno, y le obsequió una corona de oro y una palma, además de los acostumbrados ramos de olivo del templo. Y aquel día, se contentó con eso.
5 Howbeit having gotten opportunity to further his foolish enterprize, and being called into counsel by Demetrius, and asked how the Jews stood affected, and what they intended, he answered thereunto:	5 Pero él encontró una ocasión propicia para sus perversos designios, cuando Demetrio lo convocó ante el Consejo, y lo consultó acerca de las actitudes y planes de los judíos. Alcimo respondió:
6 Those of the Jews that he called Assideans, whose captain is Judas Maccabeus, nourish war and are seditious, and will not let the rest be in peace.	6 «Los judíos llamados asideos, capitaneados por Judas Macabeo, fomentan la guerra y las sediciones, y no dejan que el reino viva en paz.
7 Therefore I, being deprived of mine ancestors' honour, I mean the high priesthood, am now come hither:	7 Debido a eso, aunque he sido despojado de la dignidad heredada de mis antepasados –me refiero al sumo sacerdocio– he venido aquí,
8 First, verily for the unfeigned care I have of things pertaining to the king; and secondly, even for that I intend the good of mine own countrymen: for all our nation is in no small misery through the unadvised dealing of them aforersaid.	8 en primer lugar, sinceramente preocupado por los intereses del rey y, en segundo lugar, por consideración hacia mis compatriotas. A causa de la conducta irreflexiva de los hombres ya mencionados, toda nuestra nación padece no pocos infortunios.
9 Wherefore, O king, seeing knowest all these things, be careful for the country, and our nation, which is pressed on every side, according to the clemency that thou readily shewest unto all.	9 Por eso, ya que tú eres el rey, una vez que te informes detalladamente de todo esto, vela por nuestro país y nuestra nación amenazados por todas partes, de acuerdo con los sentimientos humanitarios que demuestras hacia todos.
10 For as long as Judas liveth, it is not possible that the state should be quiet.	10 Ciertamente, mientras Judas viva, es imposible que el Estado goce de paz».
11 This was no sooner spoken of him, but others of the king's friends, being maliciously set against Judas, did more incense Demetrius.	11 Apenas Alcimo pronunció estas palabras, los demás Amigos del rey que eran hostiles a Judas, se apresuraron a incitar aún más a Demetrio.
12 And forthwith calling Nicanor, who had been master of the elephants, and making him governor over Judea, he sent him forth,	12 Este designó inmediatamente a Nicanor, que dirigía la tropa de los elefantes, lo nombró gobernador de Judea, y lo envió
13 Commanding him to slay Judas, and to scatter them that were with him, and to make Alcimus high priest of the great temple.	13 con la orden de matar a Judas y dispersar a sus partidarios, restableciendo a Alcimo como Sumo Sacerdote del Templo más excelso.
14 Then the heathen, that had fled out of Judea from Judas, came to Nicanor by flocks, thinking the harm and calamities ot the Jews to be their welfare.	14 Los paganos que habían huido de Judea por temor a Judas, se unieron en masa a Nicanor, pensando que los infortunios y las derrotas de los judíos serían sus propias victorias.
15 Now when the Jews heard of Nicanor's coming, and that the heathen were up against them, they cast earth upon their heads, and made supplication to him that had established his people for ever, and who always helpeth his portion with manifestation of his presence.	15 Cuando los judíos se enteraron de la expedición de Nicanor y de la invasión de los paganos, se cubrieron de polvo y suplicaron a Aquel que había establecido a su pueblo para siempre y nunca dejaba de proteger a su propia herencia en forma bien visible.
16 So at the commandment of the captain they removed straightways from thence, and came near unto them at the town of Dessau.	16 Bajo la orden de su jefe, partieron inmediatamente de allí y se trabaron en lucha con ellos junto al poblado de Desau.
17 Now Simon, Judas' brother, had joined battle with Nicanor, but was somewhat discomfited through the sudden silence of his enemies.	17 Simón, el hermano de Judas, había entrado en combate con Nicanor, pero sufrió un ligero revés a causa del ataque sorpresivo de los enemigos.
18 Nevertheless Nicanor, hearing of the manliness of them that were with Judas, and the courageousness that they had to fight for their country, durst not try the matter by the sword.	18 Nicanor, enterado de la audacia de los hombres de Judas y del valor con que defendían a su patria, temió definir la situación de una manera sangrienta.
19 Wherefore he sent Posidonius, and Theodotus, and Mattathias, to make peace.	19 Por eso envió a Posidonio, Teodoto y Matatías para concertar la paz.
20 So when they had taken long advisement thereupon, and the captain had made the multitude acquainted therewith, and it appeared that they were all of one mind, they consented to the covenants,	20 Después de un detenido examen de la propuesta, el jefe la comunicó a las tropas, y por decisión unánime aceptaron el tratado.
21 And appointed a day to meet in together by themselves: and when the day came, and stools were set for either of them,	21 Se fijó un día en que los jefes se reunirían a solas en un lugar determinado; se puso una tarima de cada lado y se prepararon asientos.
22 Ludas placed armed men ready in convenient places, lest some treachery should be suddenly practised by the enemies: so they made a peaceable conference.	22 Judas distribuyó algunos hombres armados en puntos estratégicos, por si se producía inesperadamente algún ataque a traición por parte de los enemigos. Sin embargo, la entrevista se realizó normalmente.
23 Now Nicanor abode in Jerusalem, and did no hurt, but sent away the people that came flocking unto him.	23 Nicanor vivía en Jerusalén sin molestar a nadie: incluso, licenció a las tropas que se le habían incorporado en masa.
24 And he would not willingly have Judas out of his sight: for he love the man from his heart	24 Se veía constantemente, con Judas y sentía por él un sincero aprecio;
25 He prayed him also to take a wife, and to beget children: so he married, was quiet, and took part of this life.	25 le aconsejó que se casara y que tuviera hijos. Judas se casó y vivió tranquilamente, disfrutando de la vida.
26 But Alcimus, perceiving the love that was betwixt them, and considering the covenants that were made, came to Demetrius, and told him that Nicanor was not well affected toward the state; for that he had ordained Judas, a traitor to his realm, to be the king's successor.	26 Cuando Alcimo vio la comprensión que reinaba entre ellos, consiguió una copia del pacto celebrado y se presentó ante Demetrio, diciéndole que Nicanor abrigaba sentimientos contrarios a los intereses del Estado, ya que había nombrado lugarteniente suyo a Judas, el rival de su reino.
27 Then the king being in a rage, and provoked with the accusations of the most wicked man, wrote to Nicanor, signifying that he was much displeased with the covenants, and commanding him that he should send Maccabeus prisoner in all haste unto Antioch.	27 El rey se puso fuera de sí y, excitado por las calumnias de ese miserable, escribió a Nicanor, manifestándole su disgusto por el acuerdo y ordenándole que le mandara inmediatamente preso a Antioquía al Macabeo.
28 When this came to Nicanor's hearing, he was much confounded in himself, and took it grievously that he should make void the articles which were agreed upon, the man being in no fault.	28 Cuando Nicanor recibió la noticia, quedó desconcertado, porque le indignaba romper el acuerdo sin que aquel hombre hubiera cometido ninguna injusticia.
29 But because there was no dealing against the king, he watched his time to accomplish this thing by policy.	29 Pero como no era posible oponerse al rey, buscaba la ocasión favorable para cumplir la orden valiéndose de alguna estratagema.
30 Notwithstanding, when Maccabeus saw that Nicanor began to be churlish unto him, and that he entreated him more roughly than he was wont, perceiving that such sour behaviour came not of good, he gathered together not a few of his men, and withdrew himself from Nicanor.	30 El Macabeo, por su parte, viendo que Nicanor lo trataba más secamente y que le demostraba una gran frialdad en sus relaciones habituales, pensó que esa actitud no presagiaba nada bueno. Entonces reunió a un buen número de sus compañeros y se ocultó de Nicanor.
31 But the other, knowing that he was notably prevented by Judas' policy, came into the great and holy temple, and commanded the priests, that were offering their usual sacrifices, to deliver him the man.	31 Cuando este advirtió que Judas se había burlado de él tan hábilmente, se presentó en el augusto y santo Templo, mientras los sacerdotes ofrecían los sacrificios rituales y les exigió que le entregaran a aquel hombre.
32 And when they sware that they could not tell where the man was whom he sought,	32 Como ellos juraron que no sabían dónde se encontraba el hombre que buscaba,
33 He stretched out his right hand toward the temple, and made an oath in this manner: If ye will not deliver me Judas as a prisoner, I will lay this temple of God even with the ground, and I will break down the altar, and erect a notable temple unto Bacchus.	33 él, extendiendo la mano derecha hacia el Santuario, pronunció este juramento: «Si no me entregan prisionero a Judas, arrasaré este recinto consagrado a Dios, derribaré el altar y levantaré aquí mismo un espléndido templo a Dionisos».
34 After these words he departed. Then the priests lifted up their hands toward heaven, and besought him that was ever a defender of their nation, saying in this manner;	34 Dicho esto, se fue. Los sacerdotes, con las manos extendidas hacia el cielo, invocaron a Aquel que había combatido incesantemente en favor de nuestra nación, diciendo:
35 Thou, O Lord of all things, who hast need of nothing, wast pleased that the temple of thine habitation should be among us:	35 «Tú, Señor de todas las cosas, que no necesitas de nada, has querido que el Santuario donde tú habitas estuviera en medio de nosotros.
36 Therefore now, O holy Lord of all holiness, keep this house ever undefiled, which lately was cleansed, and stop every unrighteous mouth.	36 Por eso ahora, Señor santo, lleno de toda santidad, preserva para siempre de toda profanación esta Casa recién purificada».
37 Now was there accused unto Nicanor one Razis, one of the elders of Jerusalem, a lover of his countrymen, and a man of very good report, who for his kindness was called a father of the Jews.	37 Un tal Razís, uno de los ancianos de Jerusalén, buen patriota, sumamente estimado y llamado por su bondad «Padre de los judíos», fue denunciado a Nicanor.
38 For in the former times, when they mingled not themselves with the Gentiles, he had been accused of Judaism, and did boldly jeopard his body and life with all vehemency for the religion of the Jews.	38 El, en los primeros tiempos de la ruptura con el paganismo, había abrazado la causa del Judaísmo, entregándose a ella en cuerpo y alma, con una gran entereza.
39 So Nicanor, willing to declare the hate that he bare unto the Jews, sent above five hundred men of war to take him:	39 Nicanor, queriendo poner en evidencia la hostilidad que profesaba contra los judíos, envió más de quinientos soldados para detenerlo,
40 For he thought by taking him to do the Jews much hurt.	40 porque le parecía que, tomándolo prisionero, ocasionaba un gran perjuicio a los judíos.
41 Now when the multitude would have taken the tower, and violently broken into the outer door, and bade that fire should be brought to burn it, he being ready to be taken on every side fell upon his sword;	41 Cuando las tropas estaban a punto de ocupar la torre, forzando la puerta de entrada y dando órdenes de traer fuego e incendiar las puertas. Razís, acorralado por todas partes, se arrojó sobre su espada.
42 Choosing rather to die manfully, than to come into the hands of the wicked, to be abused otherwise than beseemed his noble birth:	42 El prefirió morir noblemente, antes que caer en manos de aquellos desalmados y soportar ultrajes indignos de su nobleza.
43 But missing his stroke through haste, the multitude also rushing within the doors, he ran boldly up to the wall, and cast himself down manfully among the thickest of them.	43 Pero, por lo precipitado del ataque, no acertó el golpe, y como las tropas ya se abrían paso a través de las puertas, subió valerosamente a lo alto del muro y se arrojó con intrepidez sobre la multitud.
44 But they quickly giving back, and a space being made, he fell down into the midst of the void place.	44 Esta retrocedió a una cierta distancia y él cayó en medio del espacio vacío.
45 Nevertheless, while there was yet breath within him, being inflamed with anger, he rose up; and though his blood gushed out like spouts of water, and his wounds were grievous, yet he ran through the midst of the throng; and standing upon a steep rock,	45 Estando aún con vida, lleno de ardor, se incorporó sangrando copiosamente, y a pesar de sus graves heridas, pasó corriendo por entre las tropas y se paró sobre una roca escarpada.
46 When as his blood was now quite gone, he plucked out his bowels, and taking them in both his hands, he cast them upon the throng, and calling upon the Lord of life and spirit to restore him those again, he thus died.	46 Cuando ya estaba completamente exangüe, se arrancó las entrañas y, tomándolas con ambas manos, las arrojó contra aquella gente. Así, invocando al Señor de la vida y del espíritu para que un día se las devolviera, murió aquel hombre.
