1 Now Judas had heard of the the Romans, that they were mighty and valiant men, and such as would lovingly accept all that joined themselves unto them, and make a league of amity with all that came unto them;	1 E (in quel tempo) intese Giuda il (grande) nome de' Romani, e che loro erano potenti di forza, e che loro acconsentono a tutto ciò che sono richiesti; e che egli fanno (compagnia e) amistade a qualunque gli richiede, e ch' egli sono possenti di prodezze.
2 And that they were men of great valour. It was told him also of their wars and noble acts which they had done among the Galatians, and how they had conquered them, and brought them under tribute;	2 E intese le loro battaglie e virtuose opere e buone, le quali facevano in Galazia, e come gli aveano vinti e recati sotto tributo;
3 And what they had done in the country of Spain, for the winning of the mines of the silver and gold which is there;	3 e delle molte cose che aveano fatte nel paese di Spagna; e (ancora avea udito dire) che loro aveano ridotti sotto loro signoria (e che loro erano signori) de' metalli dell' argento e dell' oro che quivi erano, e che per loro consiglio e prudenza possedevano ogni luogo;
4 And that by their policy and patience they had conquered all the place, though it were very far from them; and the kings also that came against them from the uttermost part of the earth, till they had discomfited them, and given them a great overthrow, so that the rest did give them tribute every year:	4 e li luoghi ch' erano molto lontani da loro, e li re i quali erano venuti a loro insino alla stremità della terra, erano stati percossi e rotti con grande sconfitta; (e così quegli che s' erano levati contro a loro infino dagli lontani confini della terra); e gli altri davano loro tributo ogni anno;
5 Beside this, how they had discomfited in battle Philip, and Perseus, king of the Citims, with others that lifted up themselves against them, and had overcome them:	5 e che loro aveano sconfitto e vinto Filippo e Persen re de' Cetei, e tutti gli altri che aveano contro a loro preso l'arme.
6 How also Antiochus the great king of Asia, that came against them in battle, having an hundred and twenty elephants, with horsemen, and chariots, and a very great army, was discomfited by them;	6 E ancora intese, come loro aveano sconfitto Antioco il grande, re d' Asia, il quale avea combattuto con loro, e avea (avuto in quella battaglia) CXX elefanti, e molto grande oste di cavalieri e di carri;
7 And how they took him alive, and covenanted that he and such as reigned after him should pay a great tribute, and give hostages, and that which was agreed upon,	7 e che lo avevano preso vivo, e patteggiato con lui, ch' egli e chi regnasse dopo lui dèsse a loro grande tributo, e che dèsse ostaggi, e quello ch' era ordinato (che dèsse oltre al tributo d'ogni anno);
8 And the country of India, and Media and Lydia and of the goodliest countries, which they took of him, and gave to king Eumenes:	8 e come aveano ottenuto la provincia di Media, e aveano scacciati di quelli di Lidia e d' India degli ottimi loro paesi; e toltigli da loro (per forza d'arme), gli aveano dati al re Eumene (che venne loro collegato);
9 Moreover how the Grecians had determined to come and destroy them;	9 e come quelli di Ellade volsono andare a torre e a scacciare delle terre predette (il re Eumene e il popolo suo); e come gli Romani, poi che il seppono,
10 And that they, having knowledge thereof sent against them a certain captain, and fighting with them slew many of them, and carried away captives their wives and their children, and spoiled them, and took possession of their lands, and pulled down their strong holds, and brought them to be their servants unto this day:	10 vi mandarono uno duca, e combatterono contro a loro, e molti di loro ne morirono, e sì ne menarono in prigione le loro mogli e i loro figliuoli, e rubarongli, e possedettono la terra loro, e distrussono la città e le mura, e loro recarono a servitù insino a questo dì;
11 It was told him besides, how they destroyed and brought under their dominion all other kingdoms and isles that at any time resisted them;	11 e gli altri regni e isole, le quali alcuna volta contrastarono a loro, egli gli sterminarono, e soggiogarongli.
12 But with their friends and such as relied upon them they kept amity: and that they had conquered kingdoms both far and nigh, insomuch as all that heard of their name were afraid of them:	12 E con gli amici loro, e con coloro i quali hanno riposo e pace con loro, hanno osservato l'amistade; e hanno ottenuto quegli reami che sono presso e da lungi; però che chiunque ha inteso della loro fama, temeano molto;
13 Also that, whom they would help to a kingdom, those reign; and whom again they would, they displace: finally, that they were greatly exalted:	13 e a chiunque loro vogliono essere in aiuto; che regni, sì regna; e chiunque loro vogliono disturbare, disturbano; e cosi sono molto innalzati.
14 Yet for all this none of them wore a crown or was clothed in purple, to be magnified thereby:	14 E per tutte queste cose non è alcuno di loro che porti corona e (non) si vesta di rosato, per ricevere pompa di magnificenza.
15 Moreover how they had made for themselves a senate house, wherein three hundred and twenty men sat in council daily, consulting alway for the people, to the end they might be well ordered:	15 E ch' egli aveano corte ordinata; che continuamente trecento e venti uomini consigliavano sopra la moltitudine, acciò che facessono (e confermassono) quelle cose che sono degne;
16 And that they committed their government to one man every year, who ruled over all their country, and that all were obedient to that one, and that there was neither envy nor emmulation among them.	16 e commettevano a uno uomo il loro magistrato per ciascuno anno, di signoreggiare tutta la terra loro; e tutti ubbidiscono a uno, e non è invidia nè emulazione infra loro.
17 In consideration of these things, Judas chose Eupolemus the son of John, the son of Accos, and Jason the son of Eleazar, and sent them to Rome, to make a league of amity and confederacy with them,	17 Adunque Giuda elesse Eupolemo, figliuolo di Ioanni, figliuolo di Iacob, e Giasone, figliuolo di Eleazaro, e mandogli a Roma a ordinare con loro amistade e compagnia;
18 And to intreat them that they would take the yoke from them; for they saw that the kingdom of the Grecians did oppress Israel with servitude.	18 acciò che si potessono levare d' adosso il giogo de' Greci, imperciò che loro aveano inteso che voleano recare in servitù il regno d' Israel.
19 They went therefore to Rome, which was a very great journey, and came into the senate, where they spake and said.	19 E loro andarono a Roma per molto grande via; e (giunti a Roma) entrarono nella loro grande Corte (del consiglio), e dissono:
20 Judas Maccabeus with his brethren, and the people of the Jews, have sent us unto you, to make a confederacy and peace with you, and that we might be registered your confederates and friends.	20 Giuda Maccabeo e li suoi fratelli e il popolo Giudeo mandano noi a voi a ordinare con voi compagnia e pace, e vogliamo essere vostri amici, e farci iscrivere insieme con voi compagni.
21 So that matter pleased the Romans well.	21 Donde piacque a' Romani la loro ambasciata.
22 And this is the copy of the epistle which the senate wrote back again in tables of brass, and sent to Jerusalem, that there they might have by them a memorial of peace and confederacy:	22 E ordinarono che fusse fatto loro risposta, e che fusse scritto in tavole di metallo, e mandato in Ierusalem, acciò che quivi fusse memoriale di pace e di compagnia; (e fu rescritto loro da' Romani in questa forma):
23 Good success be to the Romans, and to the people of the Jews, by sea and by land for ever: the sword also and enemy be far from them,	23 Bene sia alli Romani e alla gente Giudea in mare e in terra in eterno; e il coltello e il nimico sia di lungi da loro.
24 If there come first any war upon the Romans or any of their confederates throughout all their dominion,	24 E certo se battaglia (si darà a loro) in prima si farà contro a' Romani, o vero (poi) si farà contro a tutti loro compagni in tutta la loro signoria,
25 The people of the Jews shall help them, as the time shall be appointed, with all their heart:	25 la gente Giudea sì saranno tenuti di dare aiuto (a' Romani con pieno intendimento), sì come richiederà il tempo, con perfetto cuore.
26 Neither shall they give any thing unto them that make war upon them, or aid them with victuals, weapons, money, or ships, as it hath seemed good unto the Romans; but they shall keep their covenants without taking any thing therefore.	26 E a coloro che faranno loro guerra non daranno nè porgeranno grano nè arme nè pecunia nè navili, se non come piacerà alli Romani; e guarderanno i loro comandamenti, non ricevendo niente da loro.
27 In the same manner also, if war come first upon the nation of the Jews, the Romans shall help them with all their heart, according as the time shall be appointed them:	27 E (poi dicevano) similmente (che) se alla gente Giudea sopravenisse battaglia, i Romani li aiuteranno con puro animo, sì come il tempo concederà (o il richiederà) loro.
28 Neither shall victuals be given to them that take part against them, or weapons, or money, or ships, as it hath seemed good to the Romans; but they shall keep their covenants, and that without deceit.	28 E a quegli che andranno ad aiutargli [non] si darà grano e armi e pecunia e navi, sì come piacerà alli Romani; e osserveranno le loro promesse senza inganno.
29 According to these articles did the Romans make a covenant with the people of the Jews.	29 Secondo queste parole ordinarono i Romani col popolo de' Giudei.
30 Howbeit if hereafter the one party or the other shall think to meet to add or diminish any thing, they may do it at their pleasures, and whatsoever they shall add or take away shall be ratified.	30 Ma se dopo queste parole i Romani o i Giudei vorranno giugnere o scemare nulla a queste cose, faranno di comune consentimento (di ciascuno di loro); e tutte le cose che v'aggiugneranno, ovvero scemeranno, saranno rate e ferme.
31 And as touching the evils that Demetrius doeth to the Jews, we have written unto him, saying, Wherefore thou made thy yoke heavy upon our friends and confederates the Jews?	31 E certo delle ingiurie, le quali hae fatte il re Demetrio a' Giudei, (noi Romani) scrivemmo a lui, dicendo: perchè hai danneggiato sopra gli amici nostri e compagni?
32 If therefore they complain any more against thee, we will do them justice, and fight with thee by sea and by land.	32 Adunque sappi che s'egli un' altra volta si lamenteranno contra di te, noi faremo ch' egli averanno loro ragione, e combatteremo contro a te per mare e per terra; (e partironsi gli ambasciatori, e tornarono in Giudea, e dispuosono loro ambasciata).
