1 Now Judas had heard of the the Romans, that they were mighty and valiant men, and such as would lovingly accept all that joined themselves unto them, and make a league of amity with all that came unto them;	1 Judas entendit alors parler des Romains. “Ils sont puissants, lui dit-on, compréhensifs envers tous ceux qui prennent leur parti, ils offrent leur amitié à ceux qui s’adressent à eux. De plus, ce sont de vaillants guerriers.”
2 And that they were men of great valour. It was told him also of their wars and noble acts which they had done among the Galatians, and how they had conquered them, and brought them under tribute;	2 On raconta à Judas leurs guerres et leurs exploits chez les Gaulois, comment ils s’étaient rendus maîtres de ce peuple et l’avaient contraint à payer l’impôt.
3 And what they had done in the country of Spain, for the winning of the mines of the silver and gold which is there;	3 On lui raconta également tout ce qu’ils avaient fait en Espagne pour s’emparer des mines d’argent et d’or de ce pays,
4 And that by their policy and patience they had conquered all the place, though it were very far from them; and the kings also that came against them from the uttermost part of the earth, till they had discomfited them, and given them a great overthrow, so that the rest did give them tribute every year:	4 comment ils étaient venus à bout par leur intelligence et leur persévérance de tout ce pays qui était pourtant fort éloigné de chez eux; ils avaient de même écrasé tous les rois qui étaient venus des extrémités de la terre pour les attaquer, ils leur avaient infligé une grande défaite, de sorte que les survivants leur payaient chaque année un impôt.
5 Beside this, how they had discomfited in battle Philip, and Perseus, king of the Citims, with others that lifted up themselves against them, and had overcome them:	5 Enfin ils avaient triomphé par les armes de Philippe, puis de Persée roi des Kittim, et de ceux qui s’étaient dressés contre eux: ils les avaient tous soumis.
6 How also Antiochus the great king of Asia, that came against them in battle, having an hundred and twenty elephants, with horsemen, and chariots, and a very great army, was discomfited by them;	6 Antiocus le Grand, roi d’Asie, s’était avancé pour les combattre avec 120 éléphants, des chevaux, des chars et une immense armée, mais il avait été complètement battu par eux.
7 And how they took him alive, and covenanted that he and such as reigned after him should pay a great tribute, and give hostages, and that which was agreed upon,	7 Ils l’avaient même pris vivant, ils lui avaient imposé ainsi qu’à ses successeurs un lourd impôt qu’ils devaient payer à date fixe, et la livraison d’otages.
8 And the country of India, and Media and Lydia and of the goodliest countries, which they took of him, and gave to king Eumenes:	8 On lui avait enlevé le pays indien, la Médie, la Lydie et plusieurs de ses plus belles provinces que l’on avait données au roi Eumène.
9 Moreover how the Grecians had determined to come and destroy them;	9 Les Grecs voulaient se débarrasser des Romains.
10 And that they, having knowledge thereof sent against them a certain captain, and fighting with them slew many of them, and carried away captives their wives and their children, and spoiled them, and took possession of their lands, and pulled down their strong holds, and brought them to be their servants unto this day:	10 Lorsque ceux-ci l’avaient appris, ils avaient envoyé contre eux un seul général; il les avait battus, faisant de très nombreuses victimes. Les Romains avaient alors emmené en captivité les femmes et les enfants, ils avaient pillé leurs biens et soumis leur pays, détruit leurs forteresses et réduit en esclavage beaucoup de gens qui y sont encore aujourd’hui.
11 It was told him besides, how they destroyed and brought under their dominion all other kingdoms and isles that at any time resisted them;	11 Les autres royaumes et les îles qui avaient résisté, avaient été détruits et soumis par les Romains.
12 But with their friends and such as relied upon them they kept amity: and that they had conquered kingdoms both far and nigh, insomuch as all that heard of their name were afraid of them:	12 “Mais, lui dit-on, ils gardent leur amitié à ceux qui leur sont fidèles et leur font confiance; comme ils ont soumis les rois proches ou lointains, tous ceux qui entendent parler d’eux les redoutent.
13 Also that, whom they would help to a kingdom, those reign; and whom again they would, they displace: finally, that they were greatly exalted:	13 Ceux qu’ils soutiennent et veulent faire régner, règnent, et ils changent ceux qu’ils veulent changer; leur puissance est considérable.
14 Yet for all this none of them wore a crown or was clothed in purple, to be magnified thereby:	14 Malgré cela, aucun parmi eux n’a pris la couronne ou revêtu le manteau royal pour en tirer gloire.
15 Moreover how they had made for themselves a senate house, wherein three hundred and twenty men sat in council daily, consulting alway for the people, to the end they might be well ordered:	15 Ils ont institué un conseil de 320 membres qui chaque jour délibère sur les affaires du peuple pour que tout soit en ordre.
16 And that they committed their government to one man every year, who ruled over all their country, and that all were obedient to that one, and that there was neither envy nor emmulation among them.	16 Chaque année ils confient à un seul homme l’autorité et le pouvoir sur tout le pays; tous obéissent à ce seul homme et entre eux il n’y a ni envie ni jalousie.”
17 In consideration of these things, Judas chose Eupolemus the son of John, the son of Accos, and Jason the son of Eleazar, and sent them to Rome, to make a league of amity and confederacy with them,	17 Judas choisit donc Eupolème fils de Jean, de la famille d’Akkos, et Jason fils d’Éléazar; il les envoya à Rome pour faire avec les Romains un traité d’alliance et d’amitié.
18 And to intreat them that they would take the yoke from them; for they saw that the kingdom of the Grecians did oppress Israel with servitude.	18 Il voyait là le moyen de briser le joug des Grecs, puisque ceux-ci réduisaient Israël à l’esclavage.
19 They went therefore to Rome, which was a very great journey, and came into the senate, where they spake and said.	19 Au bout d’un très long voyage, ils arrivèrent à Rome, entrèrent au sénat et parlèrent ainsi:
20 Judas Maccabeus with his brethren, and the people of the Jews, have sent us unto you, to make a confederacy and peace with you, and that we might be registered your confederates and friends.	20 “Judas, surnommé Maccabée, ses frères et le peuple juif, nous ont envoyés vers vous pour faire avec vous un traité d’alliance et de paix. Nous voulons compter parmi vos alliés et amis.”
21 So that matter pleased the Romans well.	21 Cette demande plut aux sénateurs.
22 And this is the copy of the epistle which the senate wrote back again in tables of brass, and sent to Jerusalem, that there they might have by them a memorial of peace and confederacy:	22 Voici donc la copie de la lettre qu’ils écrivirent sur des tablettes de bronze et qu’ils envoyèrent à Jérusalem comme document de paix et d’alliance avec les Juifs:
23 Good success be to the Romans, and to the people of the Jews, by sea and by land for ever: the sword also and enemy be far from them,	23 “Que les Romains et la nation des Juifs aient la paix sur mer et sur terre à jamais! Que le glaive et l’ennemi s’éloignent d’eux!
24 If there come first any war upon the Romans or any of their confederates throughout all their dominion,	24 S’il survient une guerre à Rome ou chez l’un de ses alliés, partout où s’étend sa puissance,
25 The people of the Jews shall help them, as the time shall be appointed, with all their heart:	25 la nation des Juifs combattra sincèrement à leurs côtés selon ce que les circonstances lui indiqueront.
26 Neither shall they give any thing unto them that make war upon them, or aid them with victuals, weapons, money, or ships, as it hath seemed good unto the Romans; but they shall keep their covenants without taking any thing therefore.	26 Ils ne donneront et ne fourniront ni blé, ni armes, ni argent, ni bateaux à ses adversaires, suivant en cela les décisions de Rome: ils seront fidèles à leurs engagements sans recevoir de paiement.
27 In the same manner also, if war come first upon the nation of the Jews, the Romans shall help them with all their heart, according as the time shall be appointed them:	27 De même, s’il survient une guerre à la nation des Juifs, les Romains combattront sincèrement à ses côtés selon ce que les circonstances leur indiqueront.
28 Neither shall victuals be given to them that take part against them, or weapons, or money, or ships, as it hath seemed good to the Romans; but they shall keep their covenants, and that without deceit.	28 Ils ne donneront ni blé, ni armes, ni argent, ni bateaux aux ennemis: c’est ainsi que Rome en a décidé, ils seront fidèles à leurs promesses sans autre paiement.
29 According to these articles did the Romans make a covenant with the people of the Jews.	29 Ceci est l’accord que les Romains ont conclu avec le peuple juif.
30 Howbeit if hereafter the one party or the other shall think to meet to add or diminish any thing, they may do it at their pleasures, and whatsoever they shall add or take away shall be ratified.	30 Si dans la suite les uns et les autres veulent ajouter ou retrancher quelque chose, ils le feront en toute liberté et ce qu’ils auront ajouté ou retranché aura force de loi.
31 And as touching the evils that Demetrius doeth to the Jews, we have written unto him, saying, Wherefore thou made thy yoke heavy upon our friends and confederates the Jews?	31 Quant aux maux que le roi Démétrius a causés aux Juifs, nous lui avons écrit ceci: Pourquoi opprimes-tu les Juifs? Ce sont nos amis et nos alliés!
32 If therefore they complain any more against thee, we will do them justice, and fight with thee by sea and by land.	32 S’ils t’accusent de nouveau, nous soutiendrons leurs droits et nous te combattrons sur mer et sur terre.”
