KING JAMES BIBLEBIBLIA
Now Judas had heard of the the Romans, that they were mighty and valiant men, and such as would lovingly accept all that joined themselves unto them, and make a league of amity with all that came unto them;1 La fama de los romanos llegó a oídos de Judas. Decían que eran poderosos, se mostraban benévolos con todos los que se les unían, establecían amistad con cuantos acudían a ellos
And that they were men of great valour. It was told him also of their wars and noble acts which they had done among the Galatians, and how they had conquered them, and brought them under tribute;2 (y eran poderosos). Le contaron sus guerras y las proezas que habían realizado entre los galos, cómo les habían dominado y sometido a tributo;
And what they had done in the country of Spain, for the winning of the mines of the silver and gold which is there;3 todo cuanto habían hecho en la región de Espanña para hacerse con las minas de plata y oro de allí,
And that by their policy and patience they had conquered all the place, though it were very far from them; and the kings also that came against them from the uttermost part of the earth, till they had discomfited them, and given them a great overthrow, so that the rest did give them tribute every year:4 cómo se habían hecho dueños de todo el país gracias a su prudencia y perseverancia (a pesar de hallarse aquel país a larga distancia del suyo); a los reyes venidos contra ellos desde los confines de la tierra, los habían derrotado e inferido fuerte descalabro, y los demás les pagaban tributo cada año;
Beside this, how they had discomfited in battle Philip, and Perseus, king of the Citims, with others that lifted up themselves against them, and had overcome them:5 habían vencido en la guerra a Filipo, a Perseo, rey de los Kittim, y a cuantos se habían alzado contra ellos, y los habían sometido;
How also Antiochus the great king of Asia, that came against them in battle, having an hundred and twenty elephants, with horsemen, and chariots, and a very great army, was discomfited by them;6 Antíoco el Grande, rey de Asia, había ido a hacerles la guerra con 120 elefantes, caballería, carros y tropas muy numerosas, y fue derrotado,
And how they took him alive, and covenanted that he and such as reigned after him should pay a great tribute, and give hostages, and that which was agreed upon,7 le apresaron vivo y le obligaron, a él y a sus sucesores en el trono, a pagarles un gran tributo, a entregar rehenes y a ceder
And the country of India, and Media and Lydia and of the goodliest countries, which they took of him, and gave to king Eumenes:8 algunas de sus mejores provincias: la provincia índica, Media y Lidia, que le quitaron para dárselas al rey Eumeno;
Moreover how the Grecians had determined to come and destroy them;9 los de Grecia habían concebido el proyecto de ir a exterminarlos,
And that they, having knowledge thereof sent against them a certain captain, and fighting with them slew many of them, and carried away captives their wives and their children, and spoiled them, and took possession of their lands, and pulled down their strong holds, and brought them to be their servants unto this day:10 y en sabiéndolo los romanos, enviaron contra ellos a un solo general, les hicieron la guerra, mataron a muchos de ellos, llevaron cautivos a sus mujeres y niños, saquearon sus bienes, subyugaron el país, arrasaron sus fortalezas y les sometieron a servidumbre hasta el día de hoy;
It was told him besides, how they destroyed and brought under their dominion all other kingdoms and isles that at any time resisted them;11 a los demás reinos y a las islas, a cuantos en alguna ocasión les hicieron frente, los destruyeron y redujeron a servidumbre.
But with their friends and such as relied upon them they kept amity: and that they had conquered kingdoms both far and nigh, insomuch as all that heard of their name were afraid of them:12 En cambio, a sus amigos y a los que en ellos buscaron apoyo, les mantuvieron su amistad. Tienen bajo su dominio a los reyes vecinos y a los lejanos y todos cuantos oyen su nombre les temen.
Also that, whom they would help to a kingdom, those reign; and whom again they would, they displace: finally, that they were greatly exalted:13 Aquellos a quienes quieren ayudar a conseguir el trono, reinan; y deponen a los que ellos quieren. Han alcanzado gran altura.
Yet for all this none of them wore a crown or was clothed in purple, to be magnified thereby:14 No obstante, ninguno de ellos se ciñe la diadema ni se viste de púrpura para engreírse con ella.
Moreover how they had made for themselves a senate house, wherein three hundred and twenty men sat in council daily, consulting alway for the people, to the end they might be well ordered:15 Se han creado un Consejo, donde cada día 320 consejeros deliberan constantemente en favor del pueblo para mantenerlo en buen orden.
And that they committed their government to one man every year, who ruled over all their country, and that all were obedient to that one, and that there was neither envy nor emmulation among them.16 Confían cada año a uno solo el mando sobre ellos y el dominio de toda su tierra. Todos obedecen a este solo hombre sin que haya entre ellos envidias ni celos.
In consideration of these things, Judas chose Eupolemus the son of John, the son of Accos, and Jason the son of Eleazar, and sent them to Rome, to make a league of amity and confederacy with them,17 Judas eligió a Eupólemo, hijo de Juan, y de Haqcós, y a Jasón, hijo de Eleazar, y los envió a Roma a concertar amistad y alianza,
And to intreat them that they would take the yoke from them; for they saw that the kingdom of the Grecians did oppress Israel with servitude.18 para sacudirse el yugo de encima, porque veían que el reino de los griegos tenía a Israel sometido a servidumbre.
They went therefore to Rome, which was a very great journey, and came into the senate, where they spake and said.19 Partieron, pues, para Roma y luego de un larguísimo viaje, entraron en el Consejo, donde tomando la palabra, dijeron:
Judas Maccabeus with his brethren, and the people of the Jews, have sent us unto you, to make a confederacy and peace with you, and that we might be registered your confederates and friends.20 Judas, llamado Macabeo, sus hermanos y el pueblo judío nos han enviado donde vosotros para concertar con vosotros alianza y paz y para que nos inscribáis en el número de vuestros aliados y amigos».
So that matter pleased the Romans well.21 La propuesta les pareció bien.
And this is the copy of the epistle which the senate wrote back again in tables of brass, and sent to Jerusalem, that there they might have by them a memorial of peace and confederacy:22 Esta es la copia de la carta que enviaron a Jerusalén, grabada en planchas de bronce, para que fuesen allí para ellos documento de paz y alianza:
Good success be to the Romans, and to the people of the Jews, by sea and by land for ever: the sword also and enemy be far from them,23 «Felicidad a los romanos y a la nación de los judíos por mar y tierra para siempre. Lejos de ellos la espada y el enemigo.
If there come first any war upon the Romans or any of their confederates throughout all their dominion,24 Pero, si le sobreviene una guerra primero a Roma o a cualquiera de sus aliados en cualquier parte de sus dominios,
The people of the Jews shall help them, as the time shall be appointed, with all their heart:25 la nación de los judíos luchará a su lado, según las circunstancias se lo dicten, de todo corazón.
Neither shall they give any thing unto them that make war upon them, or aid them with victuals, weapons, money, or ships, as it hath seemed good unto the Romans; but they shall keep their covenants without taking any thing therefore.26 No darán a los enemigos ni les suministrarán trigo, armas, dinero ni naves. Así lo ha decidido Roma. Guardarán sus compromisos sin recibir compensación alguna.
In the same manner also, if war come first upon the nation of the Jews, the Romans shall help them with all their heart, according as the time shall be appointed them:27 De la misma manera, si sobreviene una guerra primero a la nación de los judíos, los romanos lucharán a su lado, según las circunstancías se lo dicten, con toda el alma.
Neither shall victuals be given to them that take part against them, or weapons, or money, or ships, as it hath seemed good to the Romans; but they shall keep their covenants, and that without deceit.28 No darán a los combatientes trigo, armas, dinero ni naves. Así lo ha decidido Roma. Guardarán sus compromisos sin dolo.
According to these articles did the Romans make a covenant with the people of the Jews.29 En estos términos se han concertado los romanos con el pueblo de los judíos.
Howbeit if hereafter the one party or the other shall think to meet to add or diminish any thing, they may do it at their pleasures, and whatsoever they shall add or take away shall be ratified.30 Si posteriormente unos y otros deciden añadir o quitar algo, lo podrán hacer a su agrado, y lo que añadan o quiten será valedero.
And as touching the evils that Demetrius doeth to the Jews, we have written unto him, saying, Wherefore thou made thy yoke heavy upon our friends and confederates the Jews?31 «En cuanto a los males que el rey Demetrio les ha causado, le hemos escrito diciéndole: “¿Por qué has hecho sentir pesadamente tu yugo sobre nuestros amigos y aliados los judíos?
If therefore they complain any more against thee, we will do them justice, and fight with thee by sea and by land.32 Si otra vez vuelven a quejarse de ti, nosotros les haremos justicia y te haremos la guerra por mar y tierra.”»
