1 Then was it declared to Holofernes, the chief captain of the army of Assur, that the children of Israel had prepared for war, and had shut up the passages of the hill country, and had fortified all the tops of the high hills and had laid impediments in the champaign countries:	1 Essendo stato annunziato a Oloferne, capo dell'esercito degli Assiri, che i figli d'Israele si preparavano a resistere, e avevan chiusi i passi delle montagne,
2 Wherewith he was very angry, and called all the princes of Moab, and the captains of Ammon, and all the governors of the sea coast,	2 montò su tutte le furie, e, infiammato di grande ira, chiamò i principi di Moab, e i capi d'Ammon,
3 And he said unto them, Tell me now, ye sons of Chanaan, who this people is, that dwelleth in the hill country, and what are the cities that they inhabit, and what is the multitude of their army, and wherein is their power and strength, and what king is set over them, or captain of their army;	3 e disse loro: « Ditemi che popolo è questo che occupa le montagne, quali siano le loro città, e quante e di che importanza; qual sia la loro forza, il loro numero, e chi sia il capo del loro esercito,
4 And why have they determined not to come and meet me, more than all the inhabitants of the west.	4 e come mai, fra tutti i popoli d'oriente, questi ci han disprezzato e non ci sono venuti incontro per accoglierci in pace? »
5 Then said Achior, the captain of all the sons of Ammon, Let my lord now hear a word from the mouth of thy servant, and I will declare unto thee the truth concerning this people, which dwelleth near thee, and inhabiteth the hill countries: and there shall no lie come out of the mouth of thy servant.	5 Allora Achior, capo di tutti i tigli d'Ammon, rispose e disse: « Se tu signor mio, ti degnerai di ascoltarmi, io in tua presenza dirò la verità riguardo a questo popolo che abita le montagne, e dalla mia bocca non uscirà una parola falsa.
6 This people are descended of the Chaldeans:	6 Questo popolo è della razza dei Caldei
7 And they sojourned heretofore in Mesopotamia, because they would not follow the gods of their fathers, which were in the land of Chaldea.	7 e da principio abitò nella Mesopotamia. Ma non volendo seguire gli dèi dei loro padri, che erano nella terra dei Caldei,
8 For they left the way of their ancestors, and worshipped the God of heaven, the God whom they knew: so they cast them out from the face of their gods, and they fled into Mesopotamia, and sojourned there many days.	8 ne abbandonarono le cerimonie che rendevan culto a molti dèi,
9 Then their God commanded them to depart from the place where they sojourned, and to go into the land of Chanaan: where they dwelt, and were increased with gold and silver, and with very much cattle.	9 e adorarono il solo Dio del cielo, il quale ordinò loro di partire di là e di andare a stare in Caran. Quando la farne oppresse tutta la regione, scesero in Egitto, ove, nello spazio di quattrocento anni si moltiplicarono in modo che il loro esercito non poteva più numerarsi .
10 But when a famine covered all the land of Chanaan, they went down into Egypt, and sojourned there, while they were nourished, and became there a great multitude, so that one could not number their nation.	10 Or siccome il re d'Egitto li opprimeva, forzandoli a fabbricar le sue città con fango e mattoni, essi alzarono le grida al loro Signore, che percosse tutta la terra d'Egitto, con diverse piaghe.
11 Therefore the king of Egypt rose up against them, and dealt subtilly with them, and brought them low with labouring in brick, and made them slaves.	11 Cessati i flagelli, gli Egiziani, che li avevano cacciati, vollero di nuovo richiamarli a servire.
12 Then they cried unto their God, and he smote all the land of Egypt with incurable plagues: so the Egyptians cast them out of their sight.	12 Ad essi che fuggivano il Dio del cielo aperse il mare in modo che da un lato all'altro le acque divennero solide come un muro, ed essi passarono a piede asciutto, camminando sul fondo del mare;
13 And God dried the Red sea before them,	13 mentre, nello stesso luogo, l'innumerevole esercito degli Egiziani che l'inseguiva fu così coperto dalle acque da non rimanerne neppure uno per raccontare ai posteri l'accaduto,
14 And brought them to mount Sina, and Cades-Barne, and cast forth all that dwelt in the wilderness.	14 usciti dal Mare Rosso, occuparono i deserti del monte Sinai, nei quali mai potè abitare l'uomo, nè riposare il figlio dell'uomo.
15 So they dwelt in the land of the Amorites, and they destroyed by their strength all them of Esebon, and passing over Jordan they possessed all the hill country.	15 Ma le fontane amare divennero dolci e potabili per essi che per quarantanni ebbero il vitto dal cielo.
16 And they cast forth before them the Chanaanite, the Pherezite, the Jebusite, and the Sychemite, and all the Gergesites, and they dwelt in that country many days.	16 Dovunque entrarono, senz'arco, nè freccia, nè scudo, nè spada, il loro Dio combattè per essi e vinse;
17 And whilst they sinned not before their God, they prospered, because the God that hateth iniquity was with them.	17 e nessuno potè insultare questo popolo, se non quando egli s'allontanò dal culto del Signore Dio suo.
18 But when they departed from the way which he appointed them, they were destroyed in many battles very sore, and were led captives into a land that was not their's, and the temple of their God was cast to the ground, and their cities were taken by the enemies.	18 Però, tutte le volte che adorarono altro dio oltre il loro proprio, furono abbandonati al saccheggio, alla spada, all'ignominia;
19 But now are they returned to their God, and are come up from the places where they were scattered, and have possessed Jerusalem, where their sanctuary is, and are seated in the hill country; for it was desolate.	19 ma tutte le volte che si pentirono d'avere abbandonato il culto del loro Dio, il Dio del cielo diede loro la forza di resistere.
20 Now therefore, my lord and governor, if there be any error against this people, and they sin against their God, let us consider that this shall be their ruin, and let us go up, and we shall overcome them.	20 Giunsero a debellare i re Cananei, i Gebusei, i Ferezei, gli Etei, gli Evei, gli Amorrei, e tutti i potenti d'Esebon e presero possesso delle loro terre e delle loro città.
21 But if there be no iniquity in their nation, let my lord now pass by, lest their Lord defend them, and their God be for them, and we become a reproach before all the world.	21 Finchè non peccavano nel cospetto del loro Dio, andava loro bene, perchè il loro Dio odia l'iniquità.
22 And when Achior had finished these sayings, all the people standing round about the tent murmured, and the chief men of Holofernes, and all that dwelt by the sea side, and in Moab, spake that he should kill him.	22 infatti nel passato, avendo abbandonata la via data loro a seguire da Dio, furono sterminati in battaglia da molti popoli e moltissimi di essi furono menati schiavi in terra straniera;
23 For, say they, we will not be afraid of the face of the children of Israel: for, lo, it is a people that have no strength nor power for a strong battle	23 ma poco fa, essendo ritornati al Signore loro Dio, si sono riuniti dopo la dispersione, e sono saliti su tutte queste montagne, e posseggono di nuovo Gerusalemme dov'è il loro santuario.
24 Now therefore, lord Holofernes, we will go up, and they shall be a prey to be devoured of all thine army.	24 Or dunque, signor mio, procura di sapere se son rei di qualche iniquità dinanzi al loro Dio: allora assaliamoli, chè il loro Dio te li darà nelle mani, e saran soggiogati dal peso della tua forza;
	25 ma se questo popolo non ha offeso il suo Dio, non potremo resistergli, perchè il loro Dio li difenderà, e noi diventeremo lo scherno di tutta la terra ».
	26 Appena Achior ebbe finito di dire queste cose, tutti i grandi d'Oloferne, in preda alla collera, pensavano di ucciderlo, e dicevansi l'un l'altro:
	27 « Chi è costui, il quale osa dire che i figli d'Israele possono resistere al re Nabucodonosor e ai suoi eserciti, essi che sono uomini senz'armi, senza forza, senza perizia nell'arte della guerra?
	28 Or per far conoscere ad Achior quanto s'inganna, saliamo sulle montagne, e, fatti prigionieri i più forti dei loro, con essi passeremo a fìl di spada anche lui,
	29 affinchè ogni nazione sappia che Nabucodonosor è il dio della terra e non ve n'è altro fuori di lui ».
