1 Then was it declared to Holofernes, the chief captain of the army of Assur, that the children of Israel had prepared for war, and had shut up the passages of the hill country, and had fortified all the tops of the high hills and had laid impediments in the champaign countries:	1 - Fu dunque narrato ad Oloferne capo dell'esercito assiro, come i figli d'Israele si fossero preparati alla resistenza, ed avessero sbarrato i passi dei monti.
2 Wherewith he was very angry, and called all the princes of Moab, and the captains of Ammon, and all the governors of the sea coast,	2 Allora, entrato in gran furore ed in ira grandissima, chiamò tutt'i principi de' Moabiti ed i capi degli Ammoniti,
3 And he said unto them, Tell me now, ye sons of Chanaan, who this people is, that dwelleth in the hill country, and what are the cities that they inhabit, and what is the multitude of their army, and wherein is their power and strength, and what king is set over them, or captain of their army;	3 e disse loro: « Ditemi che popolo è questo che ha occupato i passi montani; quali e quante sono le loro città; quale è il loro valore, quale il loro numero, e chi è il capo delle loro milizie;
4 And why have they determined not to come and meet me, more than all the inhabitants of the west.	4 e perchè, a differenza di tutti quelli che abitano ad oriente, questi ci hanno disprezzato, e non son venuti incontro a noi per riceverci pacificamente ».
5 Then said Achior, the captain of all the sons of Ammon, Let my lord now hear a word from the mouth of thy servant, and I will declare unto thee the truth concerning this people, which dwelleth near thee, and inhabiteth the hill countries: and there shall no lie come out of the mouth of thy servant.	5 Allora Achior, capo di tutti gli Ammoniti, rispose, e disse: « Se ti degnerai d'ascoltarmi, signor mio, io dirò innanzi a te la verità a riguardo di questo popolo che abita sui monti, e non uscirà parola falsa dalla mia bocca.
6 This people are descended of the Chaldeans:	6 Questo popolo è della razza de' Caldei.
7 And they sojourned heretofore in Mesopotamia, because they would not follow the gods of their fathers, which were in the land of Chaldea.	7 Esso abitò prima nella Mesopotamia, perchè non volcvnn seguire gli dèi de' padri loro, della terra de' Caldei.
8 For they left the way of their ancestors, and worshipped the God of heaven, the God whom they knew: so they cast them out from the face of their gods, and they fled into Mesopotamia, and sojourned there many days.	8 Abbandonando dunque il culto de' loro padri che adoravano una moltitudine di dèi,
9 Then their God commanded them to depart from the place where they sojourned, and to go into the land of Chanaan: where they dwelt, and were increased with gold and silver, and with very much cattle.	9 servirono al solo Dio del cielo. Questi comandò loro d'uscire di li, e d'abitare in Caran. Avendo poi la fame Invasa tutta la terra, vennero in Egitto, ed ivi in capo a quattrocent'anni si moltiplicaron talmente da formare un esercito innumerevole.
10 But when a famine covered all the land of Chanaan, they went down into Egypt, and sojourned there, while they were nourished, and became there a great multitude, so that one could not number their nation.	10 Ma avendoli il re d'Egitto angariati, e costretti a fabbricare con terra e mattoni le sue città, levaron le grida al Signore, il quale con più e diverse piaghe percosse tutto l'Egitto,
11 Therefore the king of Egypt rose up against them, and dealt subtilly with them, and brought them low with labouring in brick, and made them slaves.	11 Allora gli Egiziani li fecero andar via. Ma cessati i loro flagelli, volendo essi riprenderli, e riassoggettarli alla loro schiavitù,
12 Then they cried unto their God, and he smote all the land of Egypt with incurable plagues: so the Egyptians cast them out of their sight.	12 fuggendo quelli, il Dio del cielo aprì il mare in modo che di qua e dì là le acque si fermarono come un muro, e quelli a piede asciutto camminando sul fondo del mare l'attraversarono.
13 And God dried the Red sea before them,	13 Nello stesso luogo, un esercito innumerevole d'egiziani che li inseguiva, fu travolto dalle acque in guisa che non ne scampò neppure uno per raccontare a' posteri il fatto.
14 And brought them to mount Sina, and Cades-Barne, and cast forth all that dwelt in the wilderness.	14 Usciti poi dal Mar Rosso, occuparono i deserti del monte Sinai, dove mai potè abitare un uomo, nè un flgliuol d'uomo fermarsi.
15 So they dwelt in the land of the Amorites, and they destroyed by their strength all them of Esebon, and passing over Jordan they possessed all the hill country.	15 Ivi, delle fonti amare furon rese dolci a beversl, e per quarant' anni quelli riceverono l'alimento dal cielo.
16 And they cast forth before them the Chanaanite, the Pherezite, the Jebusite, and the Sychemite, and all the Gergesites, and they dwelt in that country many days.	16 Dovunque si avanzavano, senz'archi e saette, senza scudi e spade, il Dio loro combattè per loro, e vinse.
17 And whilst they sinned not before their God, they prospered, because the God that hateth iniquity was with them.	17 Nè vi fu chi potesse far male a quel popolo, altro che quando si sviava dal culto del Signore Dio suo.
18 But when they departed from the way which he appointed them, they were destroyed in many battles very sore, and were led captives into a land that was not their's, and the temple of their God was cast to the ground, and their cities were taken by the enemies.	18 Giacché, ogni qual volta invece del loro Dio ne adorarono un altro furon lasciati alla preda, alla spada, all'obbrobrio.
19 But now are they returned to their God, and are come up from the places where they were scattered, and have possessed Jerusalem, where their sanctuary is, and are seated in the hill country; for it was desolate.	19 Ed ogni qual volta si pentirono d'aver abbandonato il culto del loro Dio, il Dio del cielo dette loro la forza di resistere.
20 Now therefore, my lord and governor, if there be any error against this people, and they sin against their God, let us consider that this shall be their ruin, and let us go up, and we shall overcome them.	20 Infine abbatterono il re Cananeo, il Jebuseo, il Ferezeo, l'Eteo, l'Amorreo, e tutti 1 re potenti di Esebon, e ne conquistarono 1 territori e le città.
21 But if there be no iniquity in their nation, let my lord now pass by, lest their Lord defend them, and their God be for them, and we become a reproach before all the world.	21 E fintanto che non peccavano al cospetto del loro Dio, avevano ogni bene; perchè il loro Dio odia l'iniquità.
22 And when Achior had finished these sayings, all the people standing round about the tent murmured, and the chief men of Holofernes, and all that dwelt by the sea side, and in Moab, spake that he should kill him.	22 Anche in questi ultimi anni, essendosi allontanati dalla via che Dio aveva segnato loro per camminarvi, furon sconfitti in guerra da molte nazioni, e molti di loro furon condotti prigionieri in terra straniera.
23 For, say they, we will not be afraid of the face of the children of Israel: for, lo, it is a people that have no strength nor power for a strong battle	23 Ultimamente poi, ritornati al Signore Dio loro dall'esilio nel quale erano stati dispersi, si sono riuniti, sono saliti su tutte queste montagne, e di nuovo posseggono Gerusalemme, ove sono i loro santuarii.
24 Now therefore, lord Holofernes, we will go up, and they shall be a prey to be devoured of all thine army.	24 Ora dunque, signor mio, informati. Se si trovano avere al cospetto del loro Dio qualche colpa, attacchiamoli pure; perchè il loro Dio te li darà in mano, e resteranno abbattuti sotto il giogo della tua potenza.
	25 Ma se questo popolo non è reo dinanzi al suo Dio, non potremo resistere contro di loro; perchè il loro Dio li difenderà, e noi diventeremo il ludibrio di tutta la terra ».
	26 Or dunque, cessato che ebbe Achlor di parlare così, tutt' i capi dell'esercito d'Oloferne si sdegnarono, e pensavano d'ucciderlo, dicendosi uno all'altro:
	27 « Chi è costui il quale osa dire che i figli d'Israele, gente senz'armi, senza valore e senza perizia nell'arte della guerra, possan resistere al re Nabucodonosor ed a' suoi eserciti?
	28 Acciò dunque Achior conosca a prova d'averci ingannati, diamo l'assalto a que' monti; quando avrem fatti prigionieri i più forti di loro, egli insieme con essi sarà trafitto di spada,
	29 affinchè tutti i popoli sappiano che Nabucodonosor è il dio della terra, e non ve n' è altri fuori di lui ».
