1 Then was it declared to Holofernes, the chief captain of the army of Assur, that the children of Israel had prepared for war, and had shut up the passages of the hill country, and had fortified all the tops of the high hills and had laid impediments in the champaign countries:	1 On annonça à Holoferne, le général en chef de l’armée d’Assyrie, que les Israélites s’étaient préparés pour la guerre: ils avaient fermé les défilés de la montagne, fortifié les sommets des hautes montagnes et placé des obstacles dans les plaines.
2 Wherewith he was very angry, and called all the princes of Moab, and the captains of Ammon, and all the governors of the sea coast,	2 Il entra alors dans une très grande colère. Il rassembla tous les princes de Moab, tous les généraux d’Ammon, tous les gouverneurs de la côte:
3 And he said unto them, Tell me now, ye sons of Chanaan, who this people is, that dwelleth in the hill country, and what are the cities that they inhabit, and what is the multitude of their army, and wherein is their power and strength, and what king is set over them, or captain of their army;	3 “Hommes de Canaan, leur dit-il, renseignez-moi! Quel est ce peuple qui habite dans la montagne? Quelles sont les villes qu’il habite? Quelle est l’importance de leur armée et quels sont leurs points forts? Quel est le roi qui les gouverne et commande cette armée?
4 And why have they determined not to come and meet me, more than all the inhabitants of the west.	4 Pourquoi a-t-il refusé de venir au-devant de moi comme l’ont fait tous les habitants de la côte?”
5 Then said Achior, the captain of all the sons of Ammon, Let my lord now hear a word from the mouth of thy servant, and I will declare unto thee the truth concerning this people, which dwelleth near thee, and inhabiteth the hill countries: and there shall no lie come out of the mouth of thy servant.	5 Akior, le chef des Ammonites, lui répondit: “Que mon seigneur daigne écouter les paroles que son serviteur va prononcer, je vais te dire la vérité sur ce peuple de la montagne qui habite tout près d’ici; aucun mensonge ne sortira de la bouche de ton serviteur.
6 This people are descended of the Chaldeans:	6 Ces gens descendent des Kaldéens.
7 And they sojourned heretofore in Mesopotamia, because they would not follow the gods of their fathers, which were in the land of Chaldea.	7 Ils ont habité d’abord en Mésopotamie, car ils ne voulaient pas suivre les dieux de leurs pères qui habitaient en Kaldée.
8 For they left the way of their ancestors, and worshipped the God of heaven, the God whom they knew: so they cast them out from the face of their gods, and they fled into Mesopotamia, and sojourned there many days.	8 Ils se sont séparés de la voie de leurs ancêtres, et ils ont adoré le Dieu du Ciel, le Dieu qu’ils avaient reconnu. On les chassa donc d’auprès de leurs dieux et ils se sont réfugiés en Mésopotamie où ils ont séjourné longtemps.
9 Then their God commanded them to depart from the place where they sojourned, and to go into the land of Chanaan: where they dwelt, and were increased with gold and silver, and with very much cattle.	9 Puis leur Dieu leur a ordonné de sortir du pays où ils séjournaient et de s’en aller au pays de Canaan. Là, ils se sont installés et ils ont amassé de l’or, de l’argent et de nombreux troupeaux.
10 But when a famine covered all the land of Chanaan, they went down into Egypt, and sojourned there, while they were nourished, and became there a great multitude, so that one could not number their nation.	10 Comme la famine avait ravagé le pays de Canaan, ils sont descendus en Égypte pensant y rester le temps qu’ils devraient s’y nourrir. Mais là, ils sont devenus si nombreux
11 Therefore the king of Egypt rose up against them, and dealt subtilly with them, and brought them low with labouring in brick, and made them slaves.	11 que le roi d’Égypte s’en est pris à eux et les a obligés à fabriquer des briques; on les humiliait et on les traitait comme des esclaves.
12 Then they cried unto their God, and he smote all the land of Egypt with incurable plagues: so the Egyptians cast them out of their sight.	12 Ils ont alors crié vers leur Dieu et il a frappé tout le pays d’Égypte de fléaux incurables; les Égyptiens les ont donc chassé loin d’eux.
13 And God dried the Red sea before them,	13 C’est alors que Dieu a desséché la mer Rouge devant eux
14 And brought them to mount Sina, and Cades-Barne, and cast forth all that dwelt in the wilderness.	14 et les a conduits par la route du Sinaï vers Qadesh-Barné. Ils ont chassé devant eux tous ceux qui habitaient dans le désert,
15 So they dwelt in the land of the Amorites, and they destroyed by their strength all them of Esebon, and passing over Jordan they possessed all the hill country.	15 puis ils se sont installés dans le pays des Amorites et ils ont été capables d’exterminer tous les habitants de Heshbon. Ensuite ils ont traversé le Jourdain et ont pris possession de toute la montagne.
16 And they cast forth before them the Chanaanite, the Pherezite, the Jebusite, and the Sychemite, and all the Gergesites, and they dwelt in that country many days.	16 Ils ont chassé devant eux les Cananéens, les Périsites, les Jébusites, les Sikémites et tous les Guirgachites, et ils se sont installés là pour longtemps.
17 And whilst they sinned not before their God, they prospered, because the God that hateth iniquity was with them.	17 Tant qu’ils ne péchaient pas devant leur Dieu, tout allait bien pour eux, car leur Dieu déteste l’injustice.
18 But when they departed from the way which he appointed them, they were destroyed in many battles very sore, and were led captives into a land that was not their's, and the temple of their God was cast to the ground, and their cities were taken by the enemies.	18 Mais quand ils se sont écartés de la voie qu’il leur avait tracée, une moitié d’entre eux a été complètement détruite par des guerres, et l’autre a été emmenée en captivité sur une terre étrangère. Le Temple de leur Dieu a été rasé et leurs villes sont tombées entre les mains de leurs ennemis.
19 But now are they returned to their God, and are come up from the places where they were scattered, and have possessed Jerusalem, where their sanctuary is, and are seated in the hill country; for it was desolate.	19 Alors, de nouveau, ils se sont tournés vers leur Dieu et ils sont revenus de la déportation. Ils sont rentrés des lieux où ils avaient été dispersés, de nouveau ils se sont installés à Jérusalem où se trouve leur Temple et ils ont repeuplé la montagne qui était restée déserte.
20 Now therefore, my lord and governor, if there be any error against this people, and they sin against their God, let us consider that this shall be their ruin, and let us go up, and we shall overcome them.	20 Dans ces conditions, maître et seigneur, si ce peuple est en faute, s’ils ont péché contre leur Dieu - il faudra nous assurer qu’il y a bien chez eux cette cause de chute, - alors montons et attaquons-les.
21 But if there be no iniquity in their nation, let my lord now pass by, lest their Lord defend them, and their God be for them, and we become a reproach before all the world.	21 Mais si cette nation n’est pas en faute, que mon seigneur renonce, car leur Seigneur et Dieu les protégera, et toute la terre verra notre échec ridicule.”
22 And when Achior had finished these sayings, all the people standing round about the tent murmured, and the chief men of Holofernes, and all that dwelt by the sea side, and in Moab, spake that he should kill him.	22 Lorsque Akior eut fini de parler, tout le groupe qui était là rassemblé autour de la tente se mit à murmurer: les conseillers d’Holoferne, tous les habitants de la côte, ceux de Moab, voulaient même le frapper.
23 For, say they, we will not be afraid of the face of the children of Israel: for, lo, it is a people that have no strength nor power for a strong battle	23 Ils disaient: “Nous n’avons rien à craindre des Israélites! Regardez, c’est un peuple sans force, incapable de résister à une attaque sérieuse,
24 Now therefore, lord Holofernes, we will go up, and they shall be a prey to be devoured of all thine army.	24 attaquons-les! Notre armée n’en fera qu’une bouchée, seigneur Holoferne!”
