KING JAMES BIBLEDOUAI-RHEIMS
Tobias then answered and said, Father, I will do all things which thou hast commanded me:1 Then Tobias answered his father, and said: I will do all things, father, which thou hast commanded me.
But how can I receive the money, seeing I know him not?2 But how I shall get this money, I cannot tell; he knoweth me not, and I know not him: what token shall I give him? nor did I ever know the way which leadeth thither.
Then he gave him the handwriting, and said unto him, Seek thee a man which may go with thee, whiles I yet live, and I will give him wages: and go and receive the money.3 Then his father answered him, and said: I have a note of his hand with me, which when thou shalt shew him, he will presently pay it.
Therefore when he went to seek a man, he found Raphael that was an angel.4 But go now, and seek thee out some faithful man, to go with thee for his hire: that thou mayst receive it, while I yet live.
But he knew not; and he said unto him, Canst thou go with me to Rages? and knowest thou those places well?5 Then Tobias going forth, found a beautiful young man, standing girded, and as it were ready to walk.
To whom the angel said, I will go with thee, and I know the way well: for I have lodged with our brother Gabael.6 And not knowing that he was an angel of God, he saluted him, and said: From whence art thou, good young man?
Then Tobias said unto him, Tarry for me, till I tell my father.7 But he answered: Of the children of Israel. And Tobias said to him: Knowest thou the way that leadeth to the country of the Medes?
Then he said unto him, Go and tarry not. So he went in and said to his father, Behold, I have found one which will go with me. Then he said, Call him unto me, that I may know of what tribe he is, and whether he be a trusty man to go with thee.8 And he answered: I know it: and I have often walked through all the ways thereof, and I have abode with Gabelus our brother, who dwelleth at Rages a city of the Medes, which is situate in the mount of Ecbatana.
So he called him, and he came in, and they saluted one another.9 And Tobias said to him: Stay for me, I beseech thee, till I tell these same things to my father.
Then Tobit said unto him, Brother, shew me of what tribe and family thou art.10 Then Tobias going in told all these things to his father. Upon which his father being in admiration, desired that he would come in unto him.
To whom he said, Dost thou seek for a tribe or family, or an hired man to go with thy son? Then Tobit said unto him, I would know, brother, thy kindred and name.11 So going in he saluted him, and said: Joy be to thee always.
Then he said, I am Azarias, the son of Ananias the great, and of thy brethren.12 And Tobias said: What manner of joy shall be to me, who sit in darkness, and see not the light of heaven?
Then Tobit said, Thou art welcome, brother; be not now angry with me, because I have enquired to know thy tribe and thy family; for thou art my brother, of an honest and good stock: for I know Ananias and Jonathas, sons of that great Samaias, as we went together to Jerusalem to worship, and offered the firstborn, and the tenths of the fruits; and they were not seduced with the error of our brethren: my brother, thou art of a good stock.13 And the young man said to him: Be of good courage, thy cure from God is at hand.
But tell me, what wages shall I give thee? wilt thou a drachm a day, and things necessary, as to mine own son?14 And Tobias said to him: Canst thou conduct my son to Gabelus at Rages, a city of the Medes? and when thou shalt return, I will pay thee thy hire.
Yea, moreover, if ye return safe, I will add something to thy wages.15 And the angel said to him: I will conduct him thither, and bring him back to thee.
So they were well pleased. Then said he to Tobias, Prepare thyself for the journey, and God send you a good journey. And when his son had prepared all things far the journey, his father said, Go thou with this man, and God, which dwelleth in heaven, prosper your journey, and the angel of God keep you company. So they went forth both, and the young man's dog with them.16 And Tobias said to him: I pray thee, tell me, of what family, or what tribe art thou?
But Anna his mother wept, and said to Tobit, Why hast thou sent away our son? is he not the staff of our hand, in going in and out before us?17 And Raphael the angel answered: Dost thou seek the family of him thou hirest, or the hired servant himself to go with thy son?
Be not greedy to add money to money: but let it be as refuse in respect of our child.18 But lest I should make thee uneasy, I am Azarias the son of the great Ananias.
For that which the Lord hath given us to live with doth suffice us.19 And Tobias answered: Thou art of a great family. But I pray thee be not angry that I desired to know thy family.
Then said Tobit to her, Take no care, my sister; he shall return in safety, and thine eyes shall see him.20 And the angel said to him: I will lead thy son safe, and bring him to thee again safe.
For the good angel will keep him company, and his journey shall be prosperous, and he shall return safe.21 And Tobias answering, said: May you have a good journey, and God be with you in your way, and his angel accompany you.
Then she made an end of weeping.22 Then all things being ready, that were to be carried in their journey, Tobias bade his father and his mother farewell, and they set out both together.
And when they were departed, his mother began to weep, and to say: Thou hast taken the staff of our old age, and sent him away from us.
I wish the money for which thou hast sent him, had never been.
For poverty was sufficient for us, that we might account it as riches, that we saw our son.
And Tobias said to her: Weep not, our son will arrive thither safe, and will return safe to us, and thy eyes shall see him.
For I believe that the good angel of God doth accompany him, and doth order all things well that are done about him, so that he shall return to us with joy.
At these words his mother ceased weeping, and held her peace.
