KING JAMES BIBLEBIBBIA MARTINI
Then Jacob went on his journey, and came into the land of the people of the east.1 Partitosi quindi Giacobbe giunse nella terra d'oriente.
And he looked, and behold a well in the field, and, lo, there were three flocks of sheep lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks: and a great stone was upon the well's mouth.2 E vide in un campo un pozzo, e presso a questo tre greggi di pecore sdraiate: perocché a questo si abbeveravano le pecore, e la sua bocca era chiusa con una gran pietra.
And thither were all the flocks gathered: and they rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the sheep, and put the stone again upon the well's mouth in his place.3 Ed era usanza, che raunate tutte le pecore ribaltavan la pietra, e ristorati i greggi la rimettevano sopra la bocca del pozzo.
And Jacob said unto them, My brethren, whence be ye? And they said, Of Haran are we.4 Ed egli disse a' pastori: Fratelli, donde siete? Ed ei risposero: Di Haran.
And he said unto them, Know ye Laban the son of Nahor? And they said, We know him.5 E interrogolli: Conoscete voi forse Laban, figliuolo di Nachor? Dissero: Lo conosciamo.
And he said unto them, Is he well? And they said, He is well: and, behold, Rachel his daughter cometh with the sheep.6 È egli sano? disse egli. Risposero: È sano: ed ecco Rachele sua figlia, che vien col suo gregge.
And he said, Lo, it is yet high day, neither is it time that the cattle should be gathered together: water ye the sheep, and go and feed them.7 E Giacobbe disse: Rimane ancor molto del giorno, e non è tempo di ricondurre i greggi all'ovile: date prima da bere alle pecore, e poscia riconducetele al pascolo.
And they said, We cannot, until all the flocks be gathered together, and till they roll the stone from the well's mouth; then we water the sheep.8 Risposer quelli: Nol possiam fare, fino a tanto che sien radunate tutte le pecore, e tolta dalla bocca del pozzo la pietra, si abbeverino tutti i greggi.
And while he yet spake with them, Rachel came with her father's sheep: for she kept them.9 Non avean finito di parlare, quand'ecco che Rachele veniva colle pecore di suo padre: perocché ella pasceva il gregge.
And it came to pass, when Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother's brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother's brother, that Jacob went near, and rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the flock of Laban his mother's brother.10 E avendola veduta Giacobbe, e sapendo ch'ella era sua cugina germana, e che le pecore erano di Laban suo zio, tolse la pietra, colla quale chiudevasi il pozzo.
And Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice, and wept.11 E fatto bere il suo gregge, la baciò: e alzata la voce pianse,
And Jacob told Rachel that he was her father's brother, and that he was Rebekah's son: and she ran and told her father.12 E le accennò, come era fratello del padre suo, e figliuol di Rebecca: ed ella andò in fretta a recarne nuova a suo padre.
And it came to pass, when Laban heard the tidings of Jacob his sister's son, that he ran to meet him, and embraced him, and kissed him, and brought him to his house. And he told Laban all these things.13 Il quale avendo udito esser venuto Giacobbe, figliuolo di sua sorella, gli corse incontro: e abbracciatolo, e baciatolo, e ribaciatolo lo condusse a casa sua. E udite le ragioni dei suo viaggio,
And Laban said to him, Surely thou art my bone and my flesh. And he abode with him the space of a month.14 Rispose: Tu sei osso mio, e mia carne. E passato che fu un mese,
And Laban said unto Jacob, Because thou art my brother, shouldest thou therefore serve me for nought? tell me, what shall thy wages be?15 Gli disse: Forse perché tu sei mio fratello, servirai a me gratuitamente? dimmi quel che tu vuoi.
And Laban had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel.16 Or egli avea due figliuole: la maggiore chiamavasi Lia; la minore Rachele.
Leah was tender eyed; but Rachel was beautiful and well favoured.17 Ma Lia avea gli occhi cisposi: Rachele era bella di volto, e avvenente.
And Jacob loved Rachel; and said, I will serve thee seven years for Rachel thy younger daughter.18 E a questa portando amore Giacobbe disse: Ti servirò per Rachele tua figlia minore per sette anni.
And Laban said, It is better that I give her to thee, than that I should give her to another man: abide with me.19 Rispose Laban: È meglio, ch'io la dia a te, che ad altro uomo: statti con me.
And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her.20 Servì adunque Giacobbe per Rachele sette anni: e pochi gli parver quei giorni pel grande amore.
And Jacob said unto Laban, Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in unto her.21 E disse a Laban: Dammi la mia moglie: perocché è compiuto già il tempo di sposarla.
And Laban gathered together all the men of the place, and made a feast.22 E quegli, fatto invito di una gran turba di amici al convito, fece le nozze.
And it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter, and brought her to him; and he went in unto her.23 E la sera condusse a lui la sua figliuola Lia,
And Laban gave unto his daughter Leah Zilpah his maid for an handmaid.24 Dando alla figliuola una serva chiamata Zelpha. Ed essendo Giacobbe andato a stare con lei secondo il costume, allorché venne il giorno, conobbe ch'ella era Lia.
And it came to pass, that in the morning, behold, it was Leah: and he said to Laban, What is this thou hast done unto me? did not I serve with thee for Rachel? wherefore then hast thou beguiled me?25 E disse al suo suocero: Che è quello che tu ti sei indotto a fare? non ti ho io servito per Rachele? perché mi hai tu gabbato?
And Laban said, It must not be so done in our country, to give the younger before the firstborn.26 Rispose Laban: Non è usanza nel nostro paese, che le figliuole minori sien le prime a maritarsi.
Fulfil her week, and we will give thee this also for the service which thou shalt serve with me yet seven other years.27 Compisci la settimana di questo sposalizio; e ti darò anche l'altra pella servitù, che mi presterai per altri sette anni.
And Jacob did so, and fulfilled her week: and he gave him Rachel his daughter to wife also.28 Si accomodò alla proposta: e passata quella settimana, prese per moglie Rachele;
And Laban gave to Rachel his daughter Bilhah his handmaid to be her maid.29 A cui il padre avea data per serva Balam.
And he went in also unto Rachel, and he loved also Rachel more than Leah, and served with him yet seven other years.30 E giunto finalmente al possesso delle nozze bramate, l'amore della seconda fu in lui più forte, che quel della prima, servendo in casa di Laban per altri sette anni.
And when the LORD saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb: but Rachel was barren.31 Ma il Signore veggendo, com'ei disprezzava Lia, la rendette feconda, rimanendo sterile la sorella.
And Leah conceived, and bare a son, and she called his name Reuben: for she said, Surely the LORD hath looked upon my affliction; now therefore my husband will love me.32 Ed ella partorì il figliuolo, che avea conceputo, e posegli nome Ruben, dicendo: Il Signore ha veduta la mia umiliazione; adesso il mio marito mi amerà.
And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Because the LORD hath heard that I was hated, he hath therefore given me this son also: and she called his name Simeon.33 E di bel nuovo concepì, e partorì un figliuolo, e disse: Perché il Signore intese, come io era dispregiata, mi ha dato anche questo figliuolo: e diedegli il nome di Simeon.
And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Now this time will my husband be joined unto me, because I have born him three sons: therefore was his name called Levi.34 E concepì la terza volta, e partorì un altro figliuolo, e disse: Adesso sarà ben unito con me il mio marito, dacché gli ho fatti tre figliuoli: e perciò chiamollo col nome di Levi.
And she conceived again, and bare a son: and she said, Now will I praise the LORD: therefore she called his name Judah; and left bearing.35 Concepì per la quarta volta, e partorì un figliuolo, e disse: Adesso io darò laude al Signore: e perciò chiamollo Giuda; e cessò da fare figliuoli.
