JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Maccabée, avec ses compagnons, recouvra sous la conduite du Seigneur le sanctuaire et laville	1 Maccabaeus and his companions, under the Lord's guidance, restored the Temple and the city,
2 et détruisit les autels élevés par les étrangers sur la place publique ainsi que les lieux du culte.	2 and pul ed down the altars erected by the foreigners in the market place, as wel as the shrines.
3 Une fois le Temple purifié, ils bâtirent un autre autel, puis, ayant tiré des étincelles de pierresà feu, ils prirent de ce feu et, après deux ans d'interruption, ils offrirent un sacrifice, firent fumer l'encens,allumèrent les lampes et exposèrent les pains de proposition.	3 They purified the sanctuary and built another altar; then, striking fire from flints and using this fire, theyoffered the first sacrifice for two years, burning incense, lighting the lamps and setting out the loaves.
4 Cela fait, prosternés sur le ventre, ils prièrent le Seigneur de ne plus les laisser tomber dansde tels maux, mais de les corriger avec mesure, s'il leur arrivait jamais de pécher, et de ne pas les livrer auxnations blasphématrices et barbares.	4 When they had done this, prostrating themselves on the ground, they implored the Lord never againto let them fal into such adversity, but if they should ever sin, to correct them with moderation and not to deliverthem over to blasphemous and barbarous nations.
5 Ce fut le jour même où le Temple avait été profané par les étrangers que tomba le jour de lapurification du Temple, c'est-à-dire le 25 du même mois qui est Kisleu.	5 This day of the purification of the Temple fell on the very day on which the Temple had been profanedby the foreigners, the twenty-fifth of the same month, Chislev.
6 Ils célébrèrent avec allégresse huit jours de fête à la manière des Tentes, se souvenantcomment naguère, aux jours de la fête des Tentes, ils gîtaient dans les montagnes et dans les grottes à la façondes bêtes sauvages.	6 They kept eight festal days with rejoicing, in the manner of the feast of Shelters, remembering how,not long before at the time of the feast of Shelters, they had been living in the mountains and caverns like wildbeasts.
7 C'est pourquoi, portant des thyrses, de beaux rameaux et des palmes, ils firent monter deshymnes vers Celui qui avait mené à bien la purification de son lieu saint.	7 Then, carrying thyrsuses, leafy boughs and palms, they offered hymns to him who had brought thecleansing of his own holy place to a happy outcome.
8 Ils décrétèrent par un édit public confirmé par un vote que toute la nation des Juifssolenniserait chaque année ces jours-là.	8 They also decreed by public edict, ratified by vote, that the whole Jewish nation should celebratethose same days every year.
9 Telles furent donc les circonstances de la mort d'Antiochus surnommé Epiphane.	9 Such were the circumstances attending the death of Antiochus styled Epiphanes.
10 Nous allons maintenant exposer les faits qui concernent Antiochus Eupator, fils de cetimpie, en résumant les maux causés par les guerres.	10 Our task now is to unfold the history of Antiochus Eupator, son of that godless man, and briefly torelate the evil effects of the wars.
11 Ayant hérité du royaume, ce prince promut à la tête des affaires un certain Lysias, stratègeen chef de Coelé-Syrie et Phénicie.	11 On coming to the throne, this prince put at the head of affairs a certain Lysias, the general officercommanding Coele-Syria and Phoenicia,
12 Quant à Ptolémée, surnommé Makrôn, le premier à observer la justice envers les Juifs, àcause des torts qu'on leur infligeait, il s'était efforcé de les administrer pacifiquement.	12 whereas Ptolemy, known as Macron, and the first person to govern the Jews justly, had done hisbest to govern them peaceful y to make up for the wrongs inflicted on them in the past.
13 Accusé en conséquence par les amis du roi auprès d'Eupator, il s'entendait, en touteoccasion, appeler traître, pour avoir abandonné Chypre que lui avait confié Philométor, avoir passé du côtéd'Antiochus Epiphane et n'avoir pas fait honneur à la dignité de sa charge: il quitta l'existence en s'empoisonnant.	13 Denounced, in consequence, to Eupator by the Friends of the King, he heard himself cal ed traitor atevery turn: for having abandoned Cyprus, which had been entrusted to him by Philometer, for having gone overto Antiochus Epiphanes, and for having shed no lustre on his il ustrious office: he committed suicide by poisoninghimself.
14 Gorgias, devenu stratège de la région, entretenait des troupes mercenaires et saisissait toutesles occasions pour faire la guerre aux Juifs.	14 Gorgias now became general of the area; he maintained a force of mercenaries and a continualstate of war with the Jews.
15 En même temps, les Iduméens, maîtres de forteresses bien situées, harcelaient les Juifs, et,accueillant les proscrits de Jérusalem, tentaient de fomenter la guerre.	15 At the same time, the Idumaeans, who controlled important fortresses, were harassing the Jews,welcoming outlaws from Jerusalem and endeavouring to maintain a state of war.
16 Maccabée et ses compagnons, après avoir fait des prières publiques et demandé à Dieu de sefaire leur allié, se mirent en mouvement contre les forteresses des Iduméens.	16 Maccabaeus and his men, after making public supplication to God, entreating him to support them,began operations against the Idumaean fortresses.
17 Les ayant attaquées avec vigueur, ils se rendirent maîtres de ces positions et repoussèrenttous ceux qui combattaient sur le rempart; ils égorgeaient quiconque tombait entre leurs mains, ils n'en tuèrentpas moins de 20.000.	17 Vigorously pressing home their attack, they seized possession of these vantage points, beating offal who fought on the ramparts; they slaughtered al who fel into their hands, accounting for no fewer than twentythousand.
18 9.000 hommes au moins s'étant réfugiés dans deux tours remarquablement fortes, ayant aveceux tout ce qu'il faut pour soutenir un siège,	18 Nine thousand at least took refuge in two exceptional y strong towers with everything they needed towithstand a siege,
19 Maccabée laissa pour les assiéger Simon et Joseph avec Zacchée et les siens en nombresuffisant, et partit en personne pour des endroits où il y avait urgence.	19 whereupon, Maccabaeus left Simon and Joseph, with Zacchaeus and his forces, in sufficientnumbers to besiege them, and himself went off to other places requiring his attention.
20 Mais les gens de Simon, avides de richesses, se laissèrent gagner à prix d'argent parquelques-uns de ceux qui gardaient les tours et, pour une somme de 70.000 drachmes, ils en laissèrent s'échapperun certain nombre.	20 But Simon's men were greedy for money and al owed themselves to be bribed by some of the menin the towers; accepting seventy thousand drachmas, they let a number of them escape.
21 Quand on eut annoncé à Maccabée ce qui était arrivé, il réunit les chefs du peuple, il accusales coupables d'avoir vendu leurs frères à prix d'argent en relâchant contre eux leurs ennemis.	21 When Maccabaeus was told what had happened, he summoned the people's commanders andaccused the offenders of having sold their brothers for money by releasing their enemies to fight them.
22 Il les fit donc exécuter comme traîtres et aussitôt après il s'empara des deux tours.	22 Having executed them as traitors, he at once proceeded to capture both towers.
23 Menant tout à bonne fin par la valeur de ses armes, il tua dans ces deux forteresses plus de20.000 hommes.	23 Successful in all that he undertook by force of arms, in these two fortresses he slaughtered morethan twenty thousand men.
24 Timothée, qui avait été battu précédemment par les Juifs, ayant levé des forces étrangères engrand nombre et réuni quantité de chevaux venus d'Asie, parut bientôt en Judée, s'imaginant qu'il allait s'enrendre maître par les armes.	24 Timotheus, who had been beaten by the Jews once before, now assembled an enormous force ofmercenaries, mustering cavalry from Asia in considerable numbers, and soon appeared in Judaea, expecting toconquer it by force of arms.
25 A son approche, Maccabée et ses hommes se répandirent en supplications devant Dieu, latête saupoudrée de terre et les reins ceints d'un cilice.	25 At his approach, Maccabaeus and his men made their supplications to God, sprinkling earth on theirheads and putting sackcloth round their waists.
26 Prosternés contre le soubassement antérieur de l'autel, ils demandaient à Dieu de leur êtrefavorable, de se déclarer l'ennemi de leurs ennemis, l'adversaire de leurs adversaires, suivant les clairesexpressions de la Loi.	26 Prostrating themselves on the terrace before the altar, they begged him to support them and to showhimself the enemy of their enemies, the adversary of their adversaries, as the Law clearly states.

28 Au moment même où se diffusait la clarté du soleil levant, ils en vinrent aux mains de partet d'autre, les uns ayant pour gage du succès et de la victoire, outre leur vaillance, le recours au Seigneur, lesautres prenant leur emportement pour guide des batailles.	28 As the first light of dawn began to spread, the two sides joined battle, the one having as their pledgeof success and victory not only their own valour but their recourse to the Lord, the other making their own ardourtheir mainstay in the fight.
29 Au fort du combat, apparurent du ciel aux ennemis, sur des chevaux aux freins d'or, cinqhommes magnifiques qui se mirent à la tête des Juifs	29 When the battle was at its height, the enemy saw five magnificent men appear from heaven onhorses with golden bridles and put themselves at the head of the Jews;
30 et, prenant en même temps Maccabée au milieu d'eux et le couvrant de leurs armures, legardaient invulnérable. Ils lançaient aussi des traits et la foudre sur les adversaires qui, bouleversés parl'éblouissement, se dispersaient dans le plus grand désordre.	30 surrounding Maccabaeus and screening him with their own armour, they kept him unscathed, whilethey rained arrows and thunderbolts on the enemy until, blinded and confused, they scattered in completedisorder.
31 20.500 fantassins et 600 cavaliers furent alors égorgés.	31 Twenty thousand five hundred infantry and six hundred cavalry were slaughtered.
32 Quant à Timothée, il s'enfuit en personne dans une place très forte appelée Gazara, oùChéréas était stratège.	32 Timotheus himself fled to a strongly guarded citadel cal ed Gezer, where Chaereas was incommand.
33 Pendant quatre jours, Maccabée et les siens l'assiégèrent avec une ardeur joyeuse.	33 For four days Maccabaeus and his men eagerly besieged the fortress,
34 Confiants dans la force de la place, ceux qui se trouvaient à l'intérieur proféraient d'énormesblasphèmes et lançaient des paroles impies.	34 while the defenders, confident in the security of the place, hurled fearful blasphemies and godlessinsults at them.
35 Le cinquième jour commençant à poindre, vingt jeunes gens de la troupe de Maccabée, queles blasphèmes avaient enflammés de colère, s'élancèrent contre la muraille, animés d'un mâle courage et d'uneardeur farouche, et ils massacrèrent quiconque se présentait devant eux.	35 At daybreak on the fifth day, twenty young men of Maccabaeus' forces, fired with indignation at theblasphemies, manful y assaulted the wall, with wild courage cutting down everyone they encountered.
36 D'autres montaient pareillement contre les assiégés en les prenant à revers, mettaient le feuaux tours et, ayant allumé des bûchers, brûlèrent vifs les blasphémateurs. Cependant, brisant les portes, lespremiers accueillirent le reste de l'armée et à leur tête s'emparèrent de la ville.	36 Others, in a similar scaling operation, took the defenders in the rear, and set fire to the towers,lighting pyres on which they burned the blasphemers alive. The first, meanwhile, breaking open the gates, let therest of the army in and, at their head, captured the town.
37 Ils égorgèrent Timothée, qui s'était caché dans une citerne, et avec lui son frère Chéréas etApollophane.	37 Timotheus had hidden in a storage-wel , but they kil ed him, with his brother Chaereas, andApol ophanes.
38 Après avoir accompli ces exploits, ils bénirent avec des hymnes et des louanges le Seigneurqui accordait de si grands bienfaits à Israël et qui lui donnait la victoire.	38 When al this was over, with hymns and thanksgiving they blessed the Lord, who had shown suchgreat kindness to Israel and given them the victory.
