1 And the men of Ziph came to Saul in Gabaa, saying: Behold David is hid in the hill of Hachila, which is over against the wilderness.	1 Gli Zifei si recarono da Saul, a Gabaa, per dirgli: «Sappi che David sta nascosto sulla collina di Khachila in direzione del deserto».
2 And Saul arose, and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having with him three thousand chosen men of Israel, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph.	2 Saul si levò e discese verso il deserto di Zif, accompagnato da tremila uomini scelti di Israele, per dare la caccia a David nel deserto di Zif.
3 And Saul encamped in Gabaa Hachila, which was over against the wilderness in the way: and David abode in the wilderness. And seeing that Saul was come after him into the wilderness,	3 Saul si accampò sulla collina di Khachila, che è in direzione del deserto, presso la strada, mentre David dimorava nel deserto. David si accorse che Saul era venuto nel deserto per inseguirlo,
4 He sent spies, and learned that he was most certainly come thither.	4 mandò spie e seppe che Saul era giunto nel tal luogo.
5 And David arose secretly, and came to the place where Saul was: and when he had beheld the place, wherein Saul slept, and Abner the son of Ner, the captain of his army, and Saul sleeping in a tent, and the rest of the multitude round about him,	5 Allora David si alzò, venne segretamente dove Saul si era accampato e vide il posto in cui si erano messi a giacere Saul e Abner figlio di Ner, capo del suo esercito: Saul giaceva tra i carriaggi e la gente stava accampata intorno a lui.
6 David spoke to Achimelech the Hethite, and Abisai the son of Sarvia the brother of Joab, saying: Who will go down with me to Saul into the camp? And Abisai said: I will go with thee.	6 David si rivolse ad Akhimelech l’Hittita e ad Abishai figlio di Zeruia, fratello di Joab: «Chi scende con me da Saul, nell’accampamento?» Rispose Abishai: «Vengo io con te!»
7 So David and Abisai came to the people by night, and found Saul lying and sleeping in the tent, and his spear fixed in the ground at his head: and Abner and the people sleeping round about him.	7 Andarono dunque David e Abishai verso l’esercito, di notte, ed ecco, Saul giaceva addormentato tra i carriaggi, con la lancia piantata in terra presso il capo, mentre Abner e la gente giacevano intorno a lui.
8 And Abisai said to David: God hath shut up thy enemy this day into thy hands: now then I will run him through with my spear even to the earth at once, and there shall be no need of a second time.	8 Abishai disse a David: «Dio oggi ha chiuso il tuo nemico nella tua mano; su, dunque, lascia che io lo conficchi in terra con la sua lancia! Un colpo solo! Non dovrò ripeterglielo!»
9 And David said to Abisai: Kill him not: for who shall put forth his hand against the Lord's anointed, and shall be guiltless?	9 Ma David rispose ad Abishai: «Non assassinarlo; poiché chi stenderà la mano contro l’unto di Jahvè e resterà innocente?»
10 And David said: As the Lord liveth, unless the Lord shall strike him, or his day shall come to die, or he shall go down to battle and perish:	10 Poi David continuò: «Per la vita di Jahvè! Solo Jahvè lo colpirà: o arriverà il suo giorno e morirà o scenderà in guerra e verrà tolto di mezzo.
11 The Lord be merciful unto me, that I extend not my hand upon the Lord's anointed. But now take the spear, which is at his head, and the cup of water, and let us go.	11 Mi scampi Jahvè dallo stendere la mano sull’unto di Jahvè! Ora, prendi la lancia che sta presso il suo capo e la brocca dell’acqua; andiamocene».
12 So David took the spear, and the cup of water which was at Saul's head, and they went away: and no man saw it, or knew it, or awaked, but they were all asleep, for a deep sleep from the Lord was fallen upon them.	12 David prese la lancia e la brocca dell’acqua che stavano presso il capo di Saul e se ne andarono. Nessuno vide, nessuno si accorse, nessuno si svegliò. Tutti dormivano perché il sonno di Jahvè era caduto su di loro.
13 And when David was gone over to the other side. and stood on the top of the hill afar off, and a good space was between them,	13 David passò al lato opposto e si fermò sulla vetta del monte, da lontano: una grande distanza era fra di loro.
14 David cried to the people, and to Abner the son of Ner, saying: Wilt thou not answer, Abner? And Abner answering, said: Who art thou, that criest, and disturbest the king?	14 Gridò alla gente e ad Abner, figlio di Ner: «Abner, non rispondi?» Abner rispose: «Chi sei tu che disturbi il re?»
15 And David said to Abner: Art not thou a man? and who is like thee in Israel? why then hast thou not kept thy lord the king? for there came one of the people in to kill the king thy lord.	15 Disse David ad Abner: «Non sei un uomo tu? Chi infatti è come te in Israele? Perché dunque non hai fatto la guardia al tuo signore, il re? è venuto un uomo del popolo per assassinare il re tuo signore!
16 This thing is not good, that thou hast done: as the Lord liveth, you are the sons of death, who have not kept your master, the Lord's anointed. And now where is the king's spear, and the cup of water, which was at his head?	16 Non è bene ciò che tu hai fatto! Per la vita di Jahvè, siete degni di morte voi che non avete fatto la guardia al vostro signore, all’unto di Jahvè! Su, dunque, guarda: dov’è la lancia del re? Dov’è la brocca dell’acqua che stava presso il suo capo?»
17 And Saul knew David's voice, and said: Is this thy voice, my son David? And David said: It is my voice, my lord the king.	17 Allora Saul riconobbe la voce di David. Disse: «Questa è la tua voce, figlio mio David?» Rispose David: «Sì, re mio signore!»
18 And he said: Wherefore doth my lord persecute his servant? What have I done? or what evil is there in my hand?	18 Poi soggiunse: «Perché mai il mio signore insegue il suo servitore? Insomma, che cosa ho fatto? che c'è di male nella mia condotta?
19 Now therefore hear, I pray thee, my lord the king, the words of thy servant: If the Lord stir thee up against me, let him accept of sacrifice: but if the sons of men, they are cursed in the sight of the Lord, who have cast me out this day, that I should not dwell in the inheritance of the Lord, saying: Go, serve strange gods.	19 Su, il mio signore, il re ascolti le parole del suo servitore: se è Jahvè che ti spinge contro di me, aspiri egli l’odore di un sacrificio; ma se sono figli d’uomo, maledetti siano al cospetto di Jahvè, poiché mi cacciano oggi, così che io non possa più fare parte dell’eredità di Jahvè. È come dicessero: “Va’, servi divinità straniere!”.
20 And now let not my blood be shed upon the earth before the Lord: for the king of Israel is come out to seek a flea, as the partridge is hunted in the mountains.	20 Ebbene, non cada il mio sangue a terra sotto lo sguardo di Jahvè! Poiché il re di Israele è uscito a dare la caccia alla mia vita, come uno insegue la pernice per i monti».
21 And Saul said: I have sinned, return, my son David, for I will no more do thee harm, because my life hath been precious in thy eyes this day: for it appeareth that I have done foolishly, and have been ignorant in very many things.	21 Saul disse: «Ho peccato! Ritorna, figlio mio David, perché non ti farò più del male, per il fatto che la mia vita è stata preziosa ai tuoi occhi in questo giorno. Sì, ho agito da stolto e ho errato oltre ogni misura!»
22 And David answering, said: Behold the king's spear: let one of the king's servants come over and fetch it.	22 David rispose: «Ecco la lancia, o re; giunga fin qui uno dei giovani e la riprenda.
23 And the Lord will reward every one according to his justice, and his faithfulness: for the Lord hath delivered thee this day into my hand, and I would not put forth my hand against the Lord's anointed.	23 Jahvè ricambierà a ciascuno la sua giustizia e la sua fedeltà, poiché Jahvè ti ha messo oggi nella mia mano e io non ho voluto stendere la mano contro l’unto di Jahvè.
24 And as thy life hath been much set by this day in my eyes, so let my life be much set by in the eyes of the Lord, and let him deliver me from all distress.	24 Ed ecco: come la tua vita è stata oggi preziosa ai miei occhi, così sia preziosa la mia vita agli occhi di Jahvè, in modo che egli mi liberi da ogni angustia».
25 Then Saul said to David: Blessed art thou, my son David: and truly doing thou shalt do, and prevailing thou shalt prevail. And David went on his way, and Saul returned to his place.	25 Saul disse a David: «Benedetto sei tu, figlio mio David: certamente, quando opererai, avrai piena riuscita!» Poi David se ne andò per la sua strada e Saul tornò alla sua sede.
