1 And the men of Ziph came to Saul in Gabaa, saying: Behold David is hid in the hill of Hachila, which is over against the wilderness.	1 Les gens de Ziph vinrent trouver Saül à Guibéa: “Ne sais-tu pas, lui dirent-ils, que David est caché sur la colline Hakila, à l’est de la Steppe?”
2 And Saul arose, and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having with him three thousand chosen men of Israel, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph.	2 Saül descendit aussitôt au désert de Ziph avec 3 000 hommes d’élite d’Israël; il alla à la recherche de David dans le désert de Ziph.
3 And Saul encamped in Gabaa Hachila, which was over against the wilderness in the way: and David abode in the wilderness. And seeing that Saul was come after him into the wilderness,	3 Alors que Saül campait sur la colline de Hakila, qui est sur le bord du chemin à l’est de la Steppe, David, qui séjournait au désert, fut averti que Saül venait le rejoindre dans son désert.
4 He sent spies, and learned that he was most certainly come thither.	4 Il envoya des espions et il sut que Saül arrivait.
5 And David arose secretly, and came to the place where Saul was: and when he had beheld the place, wherein Saul slept, and Abner the son of Ner, the captain of his army, and Saul sleeping in a tent, and the rest of the multitude round about him,	5 Alors David vint à l’endroit même où Saül campait. David reconnut l’endroit où étaient couchés Saül et Abner, fils de Ner, le chef de l’armée. Saül était couché au centre et les gens de sa troupe étaient tout autour.
6 David spoke to Achimelech the Hethite, and Abisai the son of Sarvia the brother of Joab, saying: Who will go down with me to Saul into the camp? And Abisai said: I will go with thee.	6 David demanda à Ahimélek le Hittite et à Abisaï fils de Sérouya, frère de Joab: “Qui ira avec moi jusqu’à Saül au milieu de son camp?” Abisaï répondit: “J’irai avec toi.”
7 So David and Abisai came to the people by night, and found Saul lying and sleeping in the tent, and his spear fixed in the ground at his head: and Abner and the people sleeping round about him.	7 David et Abisaï arrivèrent donc de nuit jusqu’à la troupe. Saül dormait au milieu du camp et sa lance était plantée en terre à côté de lui, et tous ses hommes dormaient autour de lui.
8 And Abisai said to David: God hath shut up thy enemy this day into thy hands: now then I will run him through with my spear even to the earth at once, and there shall be no need of a second time.	8 Abisaï dit alors à David: “Aujourd’hui Dieu a livré ton ennemi entre tes mains. Laisse-moi le clouer à terre avec sa lance, je n’aurai pas besoin de m’y reprendre à deux fois.”
9 And David said to Abisai: Kill him not: for who shall put forth his hand against the Lord's anointed, and shall be guiltless?	9 Mais David répondit à Abisaï: “Ne le tue pas! Peux-tu porter la main sur celui que Yahvé a consacré, et rester impuni?”
10 And David said: As the Lord liveth, unless the Lord shall strike him, or his day shall come to die, or he shall go down to battle and perish:	10 David dit encore: “Aussi vrai que Yahvé est vivant, c’est Yahvé lui-même qui le frappera; ou bien il mourra parce que ce sera son jour, ou bien il ira au combat et il y restera.
11 The Lord be merciful unto me, that I extend not my hand upon the Lord's anointed. But now take the spear, which is at his head, and the cup of water, and let us go.	11 Mais je ne porterai pas la main sur celui que Yahvé a consacré. Prends seulement la lance qui est à côté de lui et la cruche d’eau, et allons-nous en.”
12 So David took the spear, and the cup of water which was at Saul's head, and they went away: and no man saw it, or knew it, or awaked, but they were all asleep, for a deep sleep from the Lord was fallen upon them.	12 David prit la lance et la cruche qui étaient à côté de Saül et ils partirent. Personne ne le vit, personne ne sut, personne ne bougea; tous dormaient, et Yahvé avait envoyé sur eux un sommeil de plomb.
13 And when David was gone over to the other side. and stood on the top of the hill afar off, and a good space was between them,	13 David passa de l’autre côté et il se tint à distance sur le sommet de la montagne; un grand espace les séparait.
14 David cried to the people, and to Abner the son of Ner, saying: Wilt thou not answer, Abner? And Abner answering, said: Who art thou, that criest, and disturbest the king?	14 David appela alors les hommes de troupe et Abner, fils de Ner: “Ne répondras-tu pas, Abner?” Abner répondit: “Qu’as-tu à m’appeler?”
15 And David said to Abner: Art not thou a man? and who is like thee in Israel? why then hast thou not kept thy lord the king? for there came one of the people in to kill the king thy lord.	15 David dit à Abner: “N’es-tu pas un homme, et qui n’a pas son pareil en Israël? Pourquoi donc as-tu gardé si mal le roi, ton seigneur? Quelqu’un est entré et il voulait tuer le roi, ton seigneur.
16 This thing is not good, that thou hast done: as the Lord liveth, you are the sons of death, who have not kept your master, the Lord's anointed. And now where is the king's spear, and the cup of water, which was at his head?	16 Tu as bien mal agi; aussi vrai que Yahvé est vivant, vous méritez la mort pour n’avoir pas gardé votre maître, celui que Yahvé a consacré. Regarde donc où sont la lance et la cruche d’eau qui étaient à côté du roi?”
17 And Saul knew David's voice, and said: Is this thy voice, my son David? And David said: It is my voice, my lord the king.	17 Saül reconnut la voix de David et dit: “Est-ce ta voix, mon fils David!” David répondit: “Oui, c’est moi, mon seigneur le roi!”
18 And he said: Wherefore doth my lord persecute his servant? What have I done? or what evil is there in my hand?	18 Il ajouta: “Pourquoi mon seigneur se lance-t-il à la poursuite de son serviteur? Qu’ai-je fait? Quel crime ai-je commis?
19 Now therefore hear, I pray thee, my lord the king, the words of thy servant: If the Lord stir thee up against me, let him accept of sacrifice: but if the sons of men, they are cursed in the sight of the Lord, who have cast me out this day, that I should not dwell in the inheritance of the Lord, saying: Go, serve strange gods.	19 Que mon seigneur veuille bien écouter les paroles de son serviteur. Si c’est Yahvé qui t’a excité contre moi, je lui présenterai une offrande pour l’apaiser. Mais si ce sont des hommes, que Yahvé les maudisse, car aujourd’hui ils m’ont chassé de l’héritage de Yahvé, comme s’ils disaient: Va et sers d’autres dieux!
20 And now let not my blood be shed upon the earth before the Lord: for the king of Israel is come out to seek a flea, as the partridge is hunted in the mountains.	20 Et le roi d’Israël est parti aujourd’hui en expédition pour chasser un homme comme s’il poursuivait une perdrix dans la montagne. Que mon sang ne tombe pas sur une terre étrangère, loin de Yahvé!”
21 And Saul said: I have sinned, return, my son David, for I will no more do thee harm, because my life hath been precious in thy eyes this day: for it appeareth that I have done foolishly, and have been ignorant in very many things.	21 Saül lui répondit: “J’ai péché! Reviens, mon fils David, je ne te ferai plus de mal. Aujourd’hui tu as respecté ma vie, et moi, je me suis conduit comme un insensé, j’ai commis un grand péché!”
22 And David answering, said: Behold the king's spear: let one of the king's servants come over and fetch it.	22 David lui dit: “Voici ta lance, mon seigneur, que l’un des jeunes gens vienne la chercher.
23 And the Lord will reward every one according to his justice, and his faithfulness: for the Lord hath delivered thee this day into my hand, and I would not put forth my hand against the Lord's anointed.	23 Yahvé rendra à chacun selon sa justice et sa fidélité. Aujourd’hui Yahvé t’avait livré entre mes mains et je n’ai pas voulu porter la main sur celui que Yahvé a consacré.
24 And as thy life hath been much set by this day in my eyes, so let my life be much set by in the eyes of the Lord, and let him deliver me from all distress.	24 Puisque aujourd’hui j’ai eu pour ta vie un très grand respect, Yahvé aura pour la mienne un très grand respect et il me délivrera de tout péril.”
25 Then Saul said to David: Blessed art thou, my son David: and truly doing thou shalt do, and prevailing thou shalt prevail. And David went on his way, and Saul returned to his place.	25 Saül dit à David: “Mon fils, sois béni. Tu réussiras certainement dans tout ce que tu feras.” Après cela David continua son chemin et Saül rentra chez lui.
