1 And the Lord said to Samuel. How It long wilt thou mourn for Saul, whom I have rejected from reigning over Israel? fill thy horn with oil, and come, that I may send thee to Isai the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.	1 Allora, poiché Samuele continuava ad affliggersi a causa di Saul, per il fatto che Jahvè si era pentito di averlo fatto regnare su Israele, Jahvè disse a Samuele: «Fino a quando continuerai ad affliggerti a causa di Saul, per il fatto che io l’ho rigettato così che non sia più re di Israele? Riempi di olio il tuo corno è va’, perché voglio mandarti da Jesse il Betlemmita; infatti mi sono scelto un re tra i suoi figli».
2 And Samuel said: How shall I go? for Saul will hear of it, and he will kill me. And the Lord said: Thou shalt take with thee a calf of the herd, and thou shalt say: I am come to sacrifice to the Lord.	2 Samuele osservò: «Come posso andarci? Saul verrà a saperlo e mi ucciderà!» Rispose Jahvè: «Prenderai con te una vitella e dirai: “Sono venuto per offrire un sacrificio a Jahvè”.
3 And thou shalt call Isai to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou art to do, and thou shalt anoint him whom I shall shew to thee.	3 Inviterai Jesse al sacrificio e io ti farò sapere ciò che devi fare: mi ungerai colui che ti indicherò».
4 Then Samuel did as the Lord had said to him. And he came to Bethlehem, and the ancients of the city wondered, and meeting him, they said: Is thy coming hither peaceable?	4 Samuele dunque fece ciò che Jahvè gli aveva ordinato e andò a Betlemme. Gli anziani della città gli andarono incontro trepidanti e dissero: «È pacifica la tua venuta?»
5 And he said: It is peaceable: I am come to offer sacrifice to the Lord, be ye sanctified, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Isai and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.	5 Rispose: «Pacifica. Sono venuto per offrire un sacrificio a Jahvè. Purificatevi e gioite con me, oggi!» Fece purificare Jesse e i suoi figli e li invitò al sacrificio.
6 And when they were come in, he saw Eliab, and said: Is the Lord's anointed before him?	6 Come giunsero, scorse Eliab e disse tra di sé: «Senza dubbio è innanzi a Jahvè il suo unto!»
7 And the Lord said to Samuel: Look not on his countenance, nor on the height of his stature: because I have rejected him, nor do I judge according to the look of man: for man seeth those things that appear, but the Lord beholdeth the heart.	7 Ma Jahvè disse a Samuele: «Non guardare il suo aspetto o l’imponenza della sua statura, poiché lo rigetto. Difatti non solo ciò che vede l’uomo vede Dio; l’uomo infatti vede gli occhi, Jahvè vede il cuore».
8 And Isai called Abinadab, and brought him before Samuel. And he said: Neither hath the Lord chosen this.	8 Allora Jesse chiamò Abinadab e lo fece passare innanzi a Samuele. Disse: «Nemmeno questo ha scelto Jahvè».
9 And Isai brought Samma, and he said of him: Neither hath the Lord chosen this.	9 Jesse fece passare Shamma. Disse: «Nemmeno questo ha scelto Jahvè».
10 Isai therefore brought his seven sons before Samuel: and Samuel said to Isai: The Lord hath not chosen any one of these.	10 Jesse fece passare i suoi sette figli innanzi a Samuele; ma Samuele gli disse: «Jahvè non ha scelto nessuno tra questi».
11 And Samuel said to Isai: Are here all thy sons? He answered: There remaineth yet a young one, who keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said to Isai: Send, and fetch him, for we will not sit down till he come hither.	11 Aggiunse poi: «Sono tutti qui i giovani?» Rispose: «C’è ancora il più piccolo che adesso sta a pascolare il gregge». Allora Samuele disse a Jesse: «Manda a prenderlo, poiché non ci metteremo a tavola finché non sia venuto qui».
12 He sent therefore and brought him Now he was ruddy and beautiful to behold, and of a comely face. And the Lord said: Arise, and anoint him, for this is he.	12 Mandò dunque e lo fece entrare: era biondo, con occhi belli e gentile di aspetto. Allora Jahvè disse: «Su, ungilo, è lui!»
13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward: and Samuel rose up, and went to Ramatha.	13 Samuele prese il corno dell’olio e lo unse in mezzo ai suoi fratelli. Lo spirito di Jahvè investì David da quel momento in poi. Samuele si levò e andò a Rama.
14 But the spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him.	14 Lo spirito di Jahvè aveva cessato di essere con Saul; anzi uno spirito maligno inviato da Jahvè si impadroniva spesso di lui, all’improvviso.
15 And the servants of Saul said to him: Behold now an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.	15 Dissero perciò a Saul i servitori: «Ecco un divino spirito maligno s’impadronisce all’improvviso di te.
16 Let our lord give orders, and thy servants who are before thee will seek out a man skilful in playing on the harp, that when the evil spirit from the Lord is upon thee, he may play with his hand, and thou mayest bear it more easily.	16 Sia lecito ai tuoi servitori parlare alla tua presenza; possano essi cercare per il nostro signore un uomo che sappia cantare al suono della cetra; così, quando sarà su di te il divino spirito maligno, egli canterà accompagnandosi con la mano e tu potrai averne bene».
17 And Saul said to his servants: Provide me then some man that can play well, and bring him to me.	17 Saul disse ai servitori: «Cercatemi un uomo che sia buon citaredo e conducetemelo».
18 And one of the servants answering, said: Behold I have seen a son of Isai the Bethlehemite, a skilful player, and one of great strength, and a man fit for war, and prudent in his words, and a comely person: and the Lord is with him.	18 Prese la parola uno dei cortigiani: «Ecco, ho visto un figlio di Jesse il Betlemmita: sa suonare la cetra ed è prode guerriero; uomo di battaglia, abile parlatore e uomo di belle forme; Jahvè è con lui».
19 Then Saul sent messengers to Isai, saying: Send me David thy son, who is in the pastures.	19 Allora Saul mandò messaggeri per dire a Jesse: «Mandami David tuo figlio che sta con il gregge».
20 And Isai took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid of the flock, and sent them by the hand of David his son to Saul.	20 Jesse prese dieci pani, un otre di vino e un capretto e li mandò a Saul per mezzo di David suo figlio.
21 And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him exceedingly, and made him his armourbearer.	21 Così David veniva presso Saul e cominciò a stare alla sua presenza; ed egli lo amò grandemente così da farlo suo scudiero.
22 And Saul sent to Isai, saying: Let David stand before me: for he hath found favour in my sight.	22 Perciò Saul mandò a dire a Jesse: «Rimanga David al mio servizio, poiché ha trovato grazia ai miei occhi».
23 So whensoever the evil spirit from the Lord was upon Saul, David took his harp, and played with his hand, and Saul was refreshed, and was better, for the evil spirit departed from him.	23 In tal modo, quando lo spirito divino investiva Saul, David prendeva la cetra e cantava suonando con la mano; Saul ne aveva conforto e bene: lo spirito maligno si allontanava da lui.
