1 And Abimelech the son of Jerobaal went to Sichem to his mother's brethren and spoke to them, and to all the kindred of his mother's father, saying:	1 Ora Abimelech, figlio di Jerub-Baal, venne a Sichem dai fratelli per parte di madre e disse a loro e a tutta la famiglia della casa di sua madre:
2 Speak to all the men of Sichem: whether is better for you that seventy men all the sons of Jerobaal should rule over you, or that one man should rule over you? And withal consider that I am your bone, and your flesh.	2 «Dite agli orecchi di tutti i signori di Sichem: “Che cosa è meglio per voi? Che vi governino settanta uomini, tutti i figli di Jerub-Baal o vi governi un solo uomo?”. Ricordate che io sono vostro osso e vostra carne!»
3 And his mother's brethren spoke of him to all the men of Sichem, all these words, and they inclined their hearts after Abimelech, saying: He is our brother:	3 I fratelli per parte di madre riferirono per filo e per segno ai signori di Sichem queste proposte e il loro cuore diventò propenso verso Abimelech, perché dicevano: «È nostro fratello».
4 And they gave him seventy weight of silver out of the temple of Baalberith: wherewith he hired to himself men that were needy, and vagabonds, and they followed him.	4 Gli diedero allora settanta sicli d’argento del tempio di Baal-Berit e Abimelech se ne servì per assoldare uomini sfaccendati e facinorosi che lo seguirono.
5 And he came to his father's house in Ephra, and slew his brethren the sons of Jerobaal, seventy men, upon one stone: and there remained only Joatham the youngest son of Jerobaal, who was hidden.	5 Andò alla casa paterna a Ofra e uccise i fratelli, figli di Jerub-Baal, settanta uomini, sulla stessa pietra. Ma rimase illeso Jotam, il più piccolo dei figli di Jerub-Baal, perché si era nascosto.
6 And all the men of Sichem were gathered together, and all the families of the city of Mello: and they went and made Abimelech king, by the oak that stood in Sichem.	6 Poi tutti i signori di Sichem e tutto Bet-Millo si riunirono e proclamarono re Abimelech, vicino al terebinto della stele, che era a Sichem.
7 This being told to Joatham, he went and stood on the top of mount Garizim: and lifting up his voice, he cried, and said: Hear me, ye men of Sichem, so may God hear you.	7 Ciò fu riferito a Jotam. Egli allora venne a mettersi sulla cima del monte Garizim e ad alta voce gridò loro: «Ascoltatemi, signori di Sichem, e Dio vi ascolterà!
8 The trees went to anoint a king over them: and they said to the olive tree: Reign thou over us.	8 Un giorno gli alberi se ne andarono per ungersi un re. Dissero all’olivo: “Regna su di noi!”.
9 And it answered: Can I leave my fatness, which both gods and men make use of, to come to be promoted among the trees?	9 L’olivo rispose loro: “Devo rinunciare al mio olio con il quale si rende onore agli dèi e agli uomini e devo andare a dondolarmi sugli alberi?”.
10 And the trees said to the fig tree: Come thou and reign over us.	10 Allora dissero gli alberi al fico: “Vieni tu, regna su di noi!”.
11 And it answered them: Can I leave my sweetness, and my delicious fruits, and go to be promoted among the other trees?	11 Il fico rispose loro: “Devo rinunciare alla mia dolcezza e al mio frutto squisito e devo andare a dondolarmi sugli alberi?”.
12 And the trees said to the vine: Come thou and reign over us.	12 Allora gli alberi dissero alla vite: “Vieni tu, regna su di noi!”.
13 And it answered them: Can I forsake my wine, that cheereth God and men, and be promoted among the other trees?	13 La vite rispose loro: “Devo rinunciare al mio mosto o che rende allegri gli dèi e gli uomini e devo andare a dondolarmi sugli alberi?”.
14 And all the trees said to the bramble: Come thou and reign over us.	14 Allora tutti gli alberi dissero al rovo: “Vieni tu, regna su di noi!”.
15 And it answered them: If indeed you mean to make me king, come ye and rest under my shadow: but if you mean it not, let fire come out from the bramble, and devour the cedars of Libanus.	15 Il rovo rispose agli alberi: “Se veramente voi volete ungere me come vostro re, venite a rifugiarvi alla mia ombra: altrimenti un fuoco esca dal rovo e divori i cedri del Libano!”.
16 Now therefore if you have done well, and without sin in appointing Abimelech king over you, and have dealt well with Jerobaal, and with his house, and have made a suitable return for the benefits of him, who fought for you,	16 Ora, se avete agito in buona fede e lealtà e avete costituito re Abimelech, se avete agito bene verso Jerub-Baal e la sua casa, se lo avete trattato secondo il merito delle sue.azioni...
17 And exposed his life to dangers, to deliver you from the hands of Madian,	17 Poiché mio padre combatté per voi ed espose la vita, quando vi liberò dalle mani di Madian:
18 And you are now risen up against my father's house, and have killed his sons seventy men upon one stone, and have made Abimelech the son of his handmaid king over the inhabitants of Sichem, because he is your brother:	18 ma oggi vi siete levati contro la casa di mio padre, avete soppresso i suoi figli, settanta uomini sulla medesima pietra, e avete costituito re sui signori di Sichem Abimelech, figlio della sua schiava, perché è vostro fratello!
19 If therefore you have dealt well, and without fault with Jerobaal, and his house, rejoice ye this day in Abimelech, and may he rejoice in you.	19 Se dunque oggi avete agito verso Jerub-Baal e la sua casa con buona fede e lealtà, siate contenti di Abimelech ed egli sia contento di voi.
20 But if unjustly: let fire come out from him, and consume the inhabitants of Sichem, and the town of Mello: and let fire come out from the men of Sichem, and from the town of Mello, and devour Abimelech.	20 Ma se non è così, esca un fuoco da Abimelech e divori i signori di Sichem e di Bet-Millo; esca un fuoco dai signori di Sichem e da Bet-Millo e divori Abimelech!»
21 And when he had said thus he fled, and went into Bera: and dwelt there for fear of Abimelech his brother.	21 Quindi Jotam fuggì, si mise in salvo, andò a Beer e si stabilì là, al sicuro da Abimelech suo fratello.
22 So Abimelech reigned over Israel for three years.	22 Abimelech esercitò il potere su Israele per tre anni;
23 And the Lord sent a very evil spirit between Abimelech and the inhabitants of Sichem: who began to detest him,	23 poi Dio mandò uno spirito cattivo tra Abimelech e i signori di Sichem e i signori di Sichem si ribellarono ad Abimelech,
24 And to leave the crime of the murder of the seventy sons of Jerobaal, and the shedding of their blood upon Abimelech their brother, and upon the rest of the princes of the Sichemites, who aided him.	24 in modo che fu resa la violenza contro i settanta figli di Jerub-Baal e il loro sangue ricadde su Abimelech loro fratello, che li aveva uccisi, e sui signori di Sichem, che lo avevano reso forte per uccidere i suoi fratelli.
25 And they set an ambush against him on the top of the mountains: and while they waited for his coming, they committed robberies, taking spoils of all that passed by: and it was told Abimelech.	25 I signori di Sichem, dunque, gli prepararono agguati sulla cima dei monti e svaligiarono tutti coloro che passavano presso di loro sulla strada. 26 And Gaal the son of Obed came with his brethren, and went over to Sichem. And the inhabitants of Sichem taking courage at his coming,	26 Intanto Gaal, figlio di Ebed, con i fratelli, passò per Sichem: egli si acquistò la confidenza dei signori di Sichem.
27 Went out into the fields, wasting the vineyards, and treading down the grapes: and singing and dancing they went into the temple of their god, and in their banquets and cups they cursed Abimelech.	27 Questi uscirono in campagna per vendemmiare nelle vigne, pigiarono l’uva, organizzarono feste, entrarono nel tempio del loro dio: mangiarono, bevvero e imprecarono contro Abimelech.
28 And Gaal the son of Obed cried: Who is Abimelech, and what is Sichem, that we should serve him? Is he not the son of Jerobaal, and hath made Zebul his servant ruler over the men of Emor the father of Sichem? Why then shall we serve him?	28 Allora Gaal, figlio di Ebed, gridò: «Chi è Abimelech e che cosa è Sichem perché dobbiamo servirlo? Forse il figlio di Jerub-Baal e Zebul suo ministro non dovrebbero servire gli uomini di Khamor, padre di Sichem? Perché dovremmo servirlo?
29 Would to God that some man would put this people under my hand, that I might remove Abimelech out of the way. And it was said to Abimelech: Gather together the multitude of an army, and come.	29 Chi mi consegnerà in mano questo popolo onde io possa allontanare Abimelech e dirgli: “Aumenta pure il tuo esercito ed esci!”?»
30 For Zebul the ruler of the city, hearing the words of Gaal, the son of Obed, was very angry,	30 Zebul, capo della città, venne a sapere i progetti di Gaal, figlio di Ebed, e la sua ira si accese.
31 And sent messengers privately to Abimelech, saying: Behold Gaal the son of Obed is come into Sichem with his brethren, and endeavoureth to set the city against thee.	31 Mandò ad Aruma messaggeri da Abimelech a dirgli: «Ecco, Gaal, figlio di Ebed, e i suoi fratelli sono arrivati a Sichem; ed ecco, stanno mettendo la città in rivolta contro di te.
32 Arise therefore in the night with the people that is with thee and he hid in the field:	32 Quindi alzati stanotte, tu e il popolo che è con te, e mettiti in agguato per la campagna;
33 And betimes in the morning at sun rising set upon the city. And when he shall come out against thee with his people, do to him what thou shalt be able.	33 domani, poi, appena si leva il sole, lanciati in fretta sulla città: Gaal e il popolo che è con lui usciranno contro di te e tu potrai agire contro di loro come la circostanza ti si offrirà».
34 Abimelech therefore arose with all his army by night, and laid ambushes near Sichem in four places.	34 Allora Abimelech e tutto il popolo che era con lui si misero in marcia di notte e si appostarono di fronte a Sichem, in quattro colonne.
35 And Gaal the son of Obed went out, and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city. And Abimelech rose up, and all his army with him from the places of the ambushes.	35 Gaal, figlio di Ebed, uscì e si fermò all’ingresso della porta della città. Allora Abimelech e tutto il popolo che era con lui balzarono fuori dall’agguato.
36 And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul: Behold a multitude cometh down from the mountains. And he answered him: Thou seest the shadows of the mountains as if they were the heads of men, and this is thy mistake.	36 Gaal vide il popolo e disse a Zebul: «Ecco gente scendere dalla cima dei monti». «Sono le ombre dei monti» gli rispose Zebul «e tu le prendi per uomini».
37 Again Gaal said: Behold there cometh people down from the middle of the land, and one troop cometh by the way that looketh towards the oak.	37 Gaal riprese: «Ecco uomini scendono dalla parte dell’ombelico della Terra, mentre un’altra colonna arriva dalla strada della quercia dei Maghi».
38 And Zebul said to him: Where is now thy mouth wherewith thou saidst? Who is Abimelech that we should serve him? Is not this the people which thou didst despise? Go out, and fight against him.	38 Allora Zebul gli disse: «Dov’è ora la boria con cui dicevi: “Chi è Abimelech, perché lo serviamo”? Non sono questi coloro che tu disprezzavi? Ora esci e combatti!»
39 So Gaal went out in the sight of the people of Sichem, and fought against Abimelech,	39 Allora Gaal partì alla testa degli uomini di Sichem e diede battaglia ad Abimelech.
40 Who chased and put him to flight, and drove him to the city: and many were slain of his people, even to the gate of the city:	40 Ma Abimelech lo mise in fuga ed egli dovette cedere innanzi a lui, mentre molti dei suoi uomini caddero prima di raggiungere l’ingresso della porta.
41 And Abimelech sat down in Ruma: but Zebul drove Gaal, and his companions out of the city, and would not suffer them to abide in it.	41 Allora Abimelech tornò ad Aruma: Zebul cacciò Gaal e i suoi fratelli e impedì loro di abitare a Sichem.
42 So the day following the people went out into the field. And it was told Abimelech.	42 Il giorno dopo, il popolo uscì in campagna e Abimelech ne fu informato.
43 And he took his army, and divided it into three companies, and laid ambushes in the fields. And seeing that the people came out of the city, he arose and set upon them,	43 Prese il popolo, lo divise in tre colonne e si mise in agguato per la campagna. Quando vide la gente che usciva dalla città, piombò su di loro e li batté.
44 With his own company, assaulting and besieging the city: whilst the two other companies chased the enemies that were scattered about the field.	44 Mentre Abimelech e la colonna che era con lui si spargevano e sì fermavano all’ingresso della porta della città, le altre due colonne si spargevano contro tutti coloro che erano in campagna e li massacravano;
45 And Abimelech assaulted the city all that day: and took it, and killed the inhabitants thereof, and demolished it, so that he sowed salt in it.	45 per tutto quel giorno Abimelech combatté contro la città; infine la prese, massacrò la popolazione che c’era, distrusse la città e vi seminò il sale.
46 And when they who dwelt in the tower of Sichem had heard this, they went into the temple of their god Berith where they had made a covenant with him, and from thence the place had taken its name, and it was exceeding strong.	46 A questa notizia tutti i cittadini di Migdol-Sichem si recarono nella cripta del tempio di El-Berit.
47 Abimelech also hearing that the men of the tower of Sichem were gathered together,	47 Quando Abimelech venne a sapere che tutti i cittadini di Migdol-Sichem si erano radunati là,
48 Went up into mount Selmon he and all his people with him: and taking an axe, he cut down the bough of a tree, and laying it on his shoulder and carrying it, he said to his companions: What you see me do, do you out of hand.	48 con tutto il suo popolo salì sul monte Zalmon: prese in mano una scure, tagliò un ramo d’albero e, alzatolo, se lo caricò sulle spalle, dicendo agli uomini che erano con lui: «Presto, fate anche voi ciò che mi avete visto fare».
49 So they cut down boughs from the trees, every man as fast as he could, and followed their leader. And surrounding the fort they set it on fire: and so it came to pass that with the smoke and with the fire a thousand persons were killed, men and women together, of the inhabitants of the tower of Sichem.	49 Allora tutti i suoi uomini tagliarono un ramo ciascuno, seguirono poi Abimelech e, gettatili contro la cripta, la bruciarono con coloro che vi si trovavano. Tutti gli uomini di Migdol-Sichem perirono così: circa mille tra uomini e donne.
50 Then Abimelech departing from thence came to the town of Thebes, which he surrounded and besieged with his army.	50 Poi Abimelech marciò su Tebez, si accampò contro di essa e la prese.
51 And there was in the midst of the city a high tower, to which both the men and the women were fled together, and all the princes of the city, and having shut and strongly barred the gate, they stood upon the battlements of the tower to defend themselves.	51 In mezzo alla città c’era una torre fortificata, in cui si erano rifugiati tutti i signori della città; uomini e donne: si erano chiusi dentro ed erano saliti sulla terrazza della torre.
52 And Abimelech coming near the tower, fought stoutly: and approaching to the gate, endeavoured to set fire to it:	52 Allora Abimelech arrivò fino alla torre e la attaccò. Come si accostava alla porta della torre per mettervi il fuoco,
53 And behold a certain woman casting a piece of a millstone from above, dashed it against the head of Abimelech, and broke his skull.	53 una donna gli gettò sulla testa la parte superiore di una macina e gli spaccò il cranio.
54 And he called hastily to his armourbearer, and said to him: Draw thy sword, and kill me: lest it should be said that I was slain by a woman. He did as he was commanded, and slew him.	54 Egli chiamò subito il giovane che portava le sue armi e gli disse: «Sguaina la tua spada e uccidimi, perché non si dica di me: “Lo ha ucciso una donna”». Il giovane lo trafisse ed egli morì.
55 And when he was dead, all the men of Israel that were with him, returned to their homes.	55 Gli uomini di Israele videro che Abimelech era morto e tornarono ciascuno a casa sua.
56 And God repaid the evil, that Abimelech had done against his father, killing his seventy brethren.	56 Così Dio ripagò le malvagità che Abimelech aveva fatto contro suo padre, uccidendo i settanta fratelli.
57 The Sichemites also were rewarded for what they had done, and the curse of Joatham the son of Jerobaal came upon them.	57 Dio fece anche ricadere sulla testa degli uomini di Sichem tutta la loro malvagità. Così si adempì su di loro la maledizione di Jotam, figlio di Jerub-Baal.
