1 My little children, these things I write to you, that you may not sin. But if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the just:	1 Mes petits enfants, je vous écris cela pour que vous ne péchiez pas. Mais si quelqu’un a péché, nous avons un protecteur auprès du Père: Jésus Christ, le Juste.
2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.	2 Il est, lui, la victime pour nos péchés, et pas seulement pour les nôtres mais pour ceux du monde entier.
3 And by this we know that we have known him, if we keep his commandments.	3 Et voilà comment nous saurons que nous le connaissons: si nous gardons ses commandements.
4 He who saith that he knoweth him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.	4 Celui qui prétend le connaître et ne garde pas ses commandements est un menteur: la vérité n’est pas chez lui.
5 But he that keepeth his word, in him in very deed the charity of God is perfected; and by this we know that we are in him.	5 Mais si quelqu’un garde sa parole, c’est chez lui que l’amour de Dieu est vraiment achevé. Voilà comment nous savons que nous sommes en lui.
6 He that saith he abideth in him, ought himself also to walk, even as he walked.	6 Si quelqu’un pense qu’il demeure en lui, il lui faut vivre de la même façon que Lui a vécu.
7 Dearly beloved, I write not a new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which you have heard.	7 Mes bien-aimés, ce n’est pas un commandement nouveau que je vous écris, mais le commandement d’autrefois que vous avez depuis le début. Ce commandement d’autrefois, c’est la parole même que vous avez entendue.
8 Again a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true both in him and in you; because the darkness is passed, and the true light now shineth.	8 Et pourtant, c’est un commandement nouveau que je vous écris: il est vraiment neuf en lui et chez nous, et déjà les ténèbres reculent cependant que luit la vraie lumière.
9 He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.	9 Si quelqu’un pense être dans la lumière alors qu’il a de la haine pour son frère, il n’est pas encore sorti des ténèbres.
10 He that loveth his brother, abideth in the light, and there is no scandal in him.	10 Celui qui aime son frère demeure dans la lumière; il ne reste rien en lui qui puisse le faire chuter.
11 But he that hateth his brother, is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth; because the darkness hath blinded his eyes.	11 Par contre, celui qui a de la haine pour son frère est en ténèbres et marche dans les ténèbres. Il ne peut savoir où il va, car cette ténèbre l’a privé de la vue.
12 I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name's sake.	12 Je vous écris ceci, mes enfants: vos péchés vous sont remis par son Nom.
13 I write unto you, fathers, because you have known him, who is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because you have overcome the wicked one.	13 Je vous écris ceci, parents: vous connaissez celui qui est depuis le commencement. Je vous écris ceci, jeunes: vous avez vaincu le Mauvais.
14 I write unto you, babes, because you have known the Father. I write unto you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and you have overcome the wicked one.	14 Je vous ai écrit, mes enfants, parce que vous connaissez le Père. Je vous ai écrit, parents, parce que vous connaissez celui qui est depuis le commencement. Je vous ai écrit, jeunes, parce que vous êtes forts et que la parole de Dieu demeure en vous et vous avez vaincu le Mauvais.
15 Love not the world, nor the things which are in the world. If any man love the world, the charity of the Father is not in him.	15 N’aimez pas le monde ni ce qui est dans le monde. Si quelqu’un aime le monde, l’amour du Père n’est pas en lui.
16 For all that is in the world, is the concupiscence of the flesh, and the concupiscence of the eyes, and the pride of life, which is not of the Father, but is of the world.	16 Car tout ce qui est dans le monde, que ce soit le désir de la chair, ou l’avidité des yeux, ou l’arrogance des riches - cela n’a rien à voir avec le Père, mais avec le monde.
17 And the world passeth away, and the concupiscence thereof: but he that doth the will of God, abideth for ever.	17 Et le monde passe avec sa convoitise, mais celui qui fait la volonté de Dieu demeure pour toujours.
18 Little children, it is the last hour; and as you have heard that Antichrist cometh, even now there are become many Antichrists: whereby we know that it is the last hour.	18 Mes enfants, nous sommes à la dernière heure. Vous avez entendu dire qu’un antichrist doit se présenter, et déjà nous avons beaucoup d’antichrists. D’où nous concluons que c’est déjà la dernière heure.
19 They went out from us, but they were not of us. For if they had been of us, they would no doubt have remained with us; but that they may be manifest, that they are not all of us.	19 Ces gens-là sont sortis d’entre nous, mais ils n’étaient pas des nôtres: s’ils étaient des nôtres, ils seraient restés avec nous. Du coup il est devenu clair que tous ne sont pas des nôtres.
20 But you have the unction from the Holy One, and know all things.	20 Pour vous, vous avez l’onction qui vient du Saint de sorte que tous vous avez la connaissance.
21 I have not written to you as to them that know not the truth, but as to them that know it: and that no lie is of the truth.	21 Je vous écris, non pas parce que vous ne connaissez pas la vérité mais parce que vous la connaissez et qu’un mensonge n’a rien à voir avec la vérité.
22 Who is a liar, but he who denieth that Jesus is the Christ? This is Antichrist, who denieth the Father, and the Son.	22 Qui est le menteur? Celui qui nie que Jésus soit le Christ. Vous avez là l’antichrist, celui qui renie à la fois le Père et le Fils.
23 Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father. He that confesseth the Son, hath the Father also.	23 Car celui qui renie le Fils n’a plus le Père et celui qui reconnaît le Fils a aussi le Père.
24 As for you, let that which you have heard from the beginning, abide in you. If that abide in you, which you have heard from the beginning, you also shall abide in the Son, and in the Father.	24 Pour vous, il faut que reste en vous ce que vous avez entendu dès le début. Si ce que vous avez appris dès le début reste en vous, vous restez vous aussi dans le Fils et dans le Père.
25 And this is the promise which he hath promised us, life everlasting.	25 C’est là ce que lui-même nous a promis, et c’est la vie éternelle.
26 These things have I written to you, concerning them that seduce you.	26 Je vous écris cela, pensant à ceux qui veulent vous égarer:
27 And as for you, let the unction, which you have received from him, abide in you. And you have no need that any man teach you; but as his unction teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie. And as it hath taught you, abide in him.	27 puisque l’onction que vous avez reçue de lui demeure en vous, vous n’avez pas besoin qu’on vienne vous enseigner. Il vous a donné l’onction et elle vous instruit de tout; elle est vérité et non mensonge. Donc, ce qu’on vous a enseigné, restez-y attachés.
28 And now, little children, abide in him, that when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be confounded by him at his coming.	28 Et maintenant, mes enfants, demeurez en lui. Dans ces conditions nous serons sans crainte lorsqu’il se montrera: nous n’aurons pas à rougir lorsqu’il nous fera rendre compte.
29 If you know, that he is just, know ye, that every one also, who doth justice, is born of him.	29 Vous savez qu’il est la droiture même: sachez donc que quiconque agit dans la droiture est né de lui.
