Brethren, the will of my heart, indeed, and my prayer to God, is for them unto salvation.1 Brothers, my dearest wish and my prayer to God is for them, that they may be saved.
For I bear them witness, that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.2 I readily testify to their fervour for God, but it is misguided.
For they, not knowing the justice of God, and seeking to establish their own, have not submitted themselves to the justice of God.3 Not recognising God's saving justice they have tried to establish their own, instead of submitting tothe saving justice of God.
For the end of the law is Christ, unto justice to every one that believeth.4 But the Law has found its fulfilment in Christ so that al who have faith wil be justified.
For Moses wrote, that the justice which is of the law, the man that shall do it, shall live by it.5 Moses writes of the saving justice that comes by the Law and says that whoever complies with it wilfind life in it.
But the justice which is of faith, speaketh thus: Say not in thy heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? that is, to bring Christ down;6 But the saving justice of faith says this: Do not think in your heart, 'Who wil go up to heaven?' --
Or who shall descend into the deep? that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.7 that is to bring Christ down; or 'Who wil go down to the depths?' -- that is to bring Christ back fromthe dead.
But what saith the scripture? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart. This is the word of faith, which we preach.8 What does it say, then? The word is very near to you; it is in your mouth and in your heart, that is, theword of faith, the faith which we preach,
For if thou confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in thy heart that God hath raised him up from the dead, thou shalt be saved.9 that if you declare with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and if you believe with your heart that Godraised him from the dead, then you wil be saved.
For, with the heart, we believe unto justice; but, with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.10 It is by believing with the heart that you are justified, and by making the declaration with your lipsthat you are saved.
For the scripture saith: Whosoever believeth in him, shall not be confounded.11 When scripture says: No one who relies on this wil be brought to disgrace,
For there is no distinction of the Jew and the Greek: for the same is Lord over all, rich unto all that call upon him.12 it makes no distinction between Jew and Greek: the same Lord is the Lord of all, and his generosityis offered to al who appeal to him,
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord, shall be saved.13 for al who cal on the name of the Lord wil be saved.
How then shall they call on him, in whom they have not believed? Or how shall they believe him, of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear, without a preacher?14 How then are they to call on him if they have not come to believe in him? And how can they believein him if they have never heard of him? And how wil they hear of him unless there is a preacher for them?
And how shall they preach unless they be sent, as it is written: How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, of them that bring glad tidings of good things!15 And how wil there be preachers if they are not sent? As scripture says: How beautiful are the feet ofthe messenger of good news.
But all do not obey the gospel. For Isaias saith: Lord, who hath believed our report?16 But in fact they have not all responded to the good news. As Isaiah says: Lord, who has givencredence to what they have heard from us?
Faith then cometh by hearing; and hearing by the word of Christ.17 But it is in that way faith comes, from hearing, and that means hearing the word of Christ.
But I say: Have they not heard? Yes, verily, their sound hath gone forth into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the whole world.18 Wel then, I say, is it possible that they have not heard? Indeed they have: in the entire earth theirvoice stands out, their message reaches the whole world.
But I say: Hath not Israel known? First, Moses saith: I will provoke you to jealousy by that which is not a nation; by a foolish nation I will anger you.19 Wel , another question, then: is it possible that Israel did not understand? In the first place Mosessaid: I shal rouse you to jealousy with a non-people, I shal exasperate you with a stupid nation.
But Isaias is bold, and saith: I was found by them that did not seek me: I appeared openly to them that asked not after me.20 And Isaiah is even bold enough to say: I have let myself be found by those who did not seek me; Ihave let myself be seen by those who did not consult me;
But to Israel he saith: All the day long have I spread my hands to a people that believeth not, and contradicteth me.21 and referring to Israel, he says: Al day long I have been stretching out my hands to a disobedientand rebel ious people.
