And when morning was come, all the chief priests and ancients of the people took counsel against Jesus, that they might put him to death.1 Logo de manhã, todos os príncipes dos sacerdotes e anciãos do povo tiveram conselho contra Jesus, para o entregarem à morte.
And they brought him bound, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.2 Em seguida, manietado, o levaram e entregaram ao governador Pôncio Pilatos.
Then Judas, who betrayed him, seeing that he was condemned, repenting himself, brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and ancients,3 Então Judas, que o tinha entregado, vendo que Jesus fora condenado, tocado de remorsos, tornou a levar as trinta moedas de prata aos príncipes dos sacerdotes, e aos anciãos,
Saying: I have sinned in betraying innocent blood. But they said: What is that to us? look thou to it.4 dizendo: "Pequei, entregando o sangue inocente." Mas eles disseram: "Que nos importa? Isso é contigo."
And casting down the pieces of silver in the temple, he departed: and went and hanged himself with an halter.5 Então, tendo atirado as moedas de prata para o templo, retirou-se e foi pendurar-se de um laço.
But the chief priests having taken the pieces of silver, said: It is not lawful to put them into the corbona, because it is the price of blood.6 Os príncipes dos sacerdotes, tomando as moedas de prata, disseram : "Não é licito deitá-las na arca das esmolas, porque são preço de sangue."
And after they had consulted together, they bought with them the potter's field, to be a burying place for strangers.7 E, tendo consultado entre si, compraram com elas o campo do Oleiro, para sepultura dos estrangeiros.
For this cause the field was called Haceldama, that is, The field of blood, even to this day.8 Por esta razão aquele campo foi chamado campo de sangue, até ao dia de hoje.
Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremias the prophet, saying: And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was prized, whom they prized of the children of Israel.9 Então se cumpriu o que foi predito por Jeremias, profeta: Tomaram as trinta moedas de prata, custo daquele cujo preço foi avaliado pelos filhos de Israel,
And they gave them unto the potter's field, as the Lord appointed to me.10 e deram-nas pelo campo do Oleiro, como o Senhor me ordenou.
And Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, saying: Art thou the king of the Jews? Jesus saith to him: Thou sayest it.11 Jesus foi apresentado diante do governador, que o interrogou, dizendo: "Tu és o Rei dos Judeus?" Jesus respondeu-lhe: "Tu o dizes."
And when he was accused by the chief priests and ancients, he answered nothing.12 Mas, sendo acusado pelos príncipes dos sacerdotes e pelos anciãos, nada respondeu.
Then Pilate saith to him: Dost not thou hear how great testimonies they allege against thee?13 Então Pilatos disse-lhe: "Não ouves de quantas coisas te acusam?"
And he answered him to never a word; so that the governor wondered exceedingly.14 E não lhe respondeu a palavra alguma, de modo que o governador ficou em extremo admirado.
Now upon the solemn day the governor was accustomed to release to the people one prisoner, whom they would.15 O governador tinha costume, por ocasião da festa da Páscoa, soltar aquele preso que o povo quisesse.
And he had then a notorious prisoner, that was called Barabbas.16 Naquela ocasião tinha ele um preso afamado, que se chamava Barrabás.
They therefore being gathered together, Pilate said: Whom will you that I release to you, Barabbas, or Jesus that is called Christ?17 Estando eles reunidos, perguntou-lhes Pilatos: "Qual quereis vós que eu vos solte? Barrabás ou Jesus, que se chama o Cristo?"
For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.18 Porque sabia que o tinham entregado por inveja.
And as he was sitting in the place of judgment, his wife sent to him, saying: Have thou nothing to do with that just man; for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.19 Enquanto ele estava sentado no tribunal, sua mulher mandou-lhe dizer: "Nada haja entre ti e esse justo, porque fui hoje muito atormentada em sonhos por causa dele."
But the chief priests and ancients persuaded the people, that they should ask Barabbas, and make Jesus away.20 Mas os príncipes dos sacerdotes e os anciãos persuadiram o povo que pedisse Barrabás e que fizesse morrer Jesus.
And the governor answering, said to them: Whether will you of the two to be released unto you? But they said, Barabbas.21 O governador, tomando a palavra, disse-lhes: Qual dos dois quereis que eu vos solte?" Eles responderam: "Barrabás."
Pilate saith to them: What shall I do then with Jesus that is called Christ? They say all: Let him be crucified.22 Pilatos disse-lhes: "Que hei-de então fazer de Jesus, que se chama Cristo?"
The governor said to them: Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying: Let him be crucified.23 Disseram todos: "Seja crucificado." O governador disse-lhes; "Mas que mal fez ele?" Eles, porém, gritavam mais alto: "Seja crucificado!"
And Pilate seeing that he prevailed nothing, but that rather a tumult was made; taking water washed his hands before the people, saying: I am innocent of the blood of this just man; look you to it.24 Pilatos, vendo que nada conseguia, mas que cada vez era maior o tumulto, tomando água, lavou as mãos diante do povo, dizendo: "Eu sou inocente do sangue deste justo; a vós pertence toda a responsabilidade."
And the whole people answering, said: His blood be upon us and our children.25 Todo o povo respondeu: "O seu sangue caia sobre nós e sobre nossos filhos."
Then he released to them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, delivered him unto them to be crucified.26 Então soltou-lhes Barrabás. Quanto a Jesus, depois de o ter mandado flagelar, entregou-lho para ser crucificado.
Then the soldiers of the governor taking Jesus into the hall, gathered together unto him the whole band;27 Então os soldados do governador, conduzindo Jesus ao Pretório, juntaram em volta dele toda a coorte.
And stripping him, they put a scarlet cloak about him.28 Depois de o terem despido, lançaram sobre ele um manto carmezim.
And platting a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand. And bowing the knee before him, they mocked him, saying: Hail, king of the Jews.29 Em seguida, tecendo uma coroa de espinhos, puseram-lha sobre a cabeça, e na mão direita uma cana. E, dobrando o joelho diante dele, o escarneciam, dizendo: "Salve, ó rei dos Judeus."
And spitting upon him, they took the reed, and struck his head.30 Cuspindo-lhe, tomavam a cana e batiam-lhe com ela na cabeça.
And after they had mocked him, they took off the cloak from him, and put on him his own garments, and led him away to crucify him.31 Depois que o escarneceram, tiraram-lhe o manto, revestiram-no com os seus vestidos, e levaram-no para o crucificarem.
And going out, they found a man of Cyrene, named Simon: him they forced to take up his cross.32 Ao sair, encontraram um homem de Cirene, chamado Simão, ao qual obrigaram a levar a cruz de Jesus.
And they came to the place that is called Golgotha, which is the place of Calvary.33 Tendo chegado ao lugar, chamado Gólgota, isto é, lugar do Crânio,
And they gave him wine to drink mingled with gall. And when he had tasted, he would not drink.34 deram-lhe a beber vinho misturado com fel. Tendo-o provado, não quis beber.
And after they had crucified him, they divided his garments, casting lots; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: They divided my garments among them; and upon my vesture they cast lots.35 Depois que o crucificaram, repartiram entre si os seus vestidos, lançando sortes, cumprindo-se deste modo o que tinha sido anunciado pelo profeta: Repartiram entre si os meus vestidos, sobre a minha túnica lançaram sortes (Ps. 21, 19).
And they sat and watched him.36 E, sentados, o guardavam.
And they put over his head his cause written: THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.37 Puseram por cima da sua cabeça uma inscrição indicando a causa da sua morte: Este é Jesus, o Rei dos Judeus.
Then were crucified with him two thieves: one on the right hand, and one on the left.38 Ao mesmo tempo foram crucificados com ele dois ladrões: um à direita, outro à esquerda.
And they that passed by, blasphemed him, wagging their heads,39 Os que iam passando ultrajavam-no, movendo as suas cabeças,
And saying: Vah, thou that destroyest the temple of God, and in three days dost rebuild it: save thy own self: if thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.40 e dizendo: "Ó tu, que destróis o templo e o reedificas em três dias, salva-te a ti mesmo: Se és Filho de Deus, desce da cruz."
In like manner also the chief priests, with the scribes and ancients, mocking, said:41 Da mesma sorte, insultando-o também os príncipes dos sacerdotes com os escribas e os anciãos, diziam:
He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the king of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.42 "Ele salvou outros, a si mesmo não se pode salvar. Se é rei de Israel, desça agora da cruz, e creremos nele.
He trusted in God; let him now deliver him if he will have him; for he said: I am the Son of God.43 Confiou em Deus: Se Deus o ama, que o livre agora; porque ele disse: Eu sou Filho de Deus."
And the selfsame thing the thieves also, that were crucified with him, reproached him with.44 Do mesmo modo o insultavam os ladrões que estavam crucificados com ele.
Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over the whole earth, until the ninth hour.45 Desde a hora sexta até à hora nona, houve trevas sobre toda a terra.
And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying: Eli, Eli, lamma sabacthani? that is, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?46 Perto da hora nona, exclamou Jesus com voz forte: "Eli, Eli, lema sabachtani?" isto é: Deus meu, Deus meu, porque me abandonaste?
And some that stood there and heard, said: This man calleth Elias.47 Alguns dos que ali estavam ao ouvir isto, diziam: "Ele chama por Elias."
And immediately one of them running took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar; and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.48 Imediatamente, correndo um deles, tendo tomado uma esponja, ensopou-a em vinagre, pô-la sobre uma cana, e lhe dava de beber.
And the others said: Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to deliver him.49 Porém, os outros diziam: "Deixa; vejamos se vem Elias livrá-lo."
And Jesus again crying with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.50 Jesus, tornando a dar um alto grito, expirou.
And behold the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top even to the bottom, and the earth quaked, and the rocks were rent.51 E eis que o véu do templo se rasgou em duas parles de alto a baixo, a terra tremeu, as rochas fenderam-se,
And the graves were opened: and many bodies of the saints that had slept arose,52 abriram-se as sepulturas, e muitos corpos de santos, que tinham adormecido, ressuscitaram,
And coming out of the tombs after his resurrection, came into the holy city, and appeared to many.53 e saindo das sepulturas depois da ressurreição de Jesus, foram a cidade santa, e apareceram a muitos.
Now the centurion and they that were with him watching Jesus, having seen the earthquake, and the things that were done, were sore afraid, saying: Indeed this was the Son of God.54 O centurião e os que com ele estavam de guarda a Jesus, vendo o terremoto e as coisas que aconteciam, tiveram grande medo, e diziam: "Na verdade este era Filho de Deus."
And there were there many women afar off, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him:55 Achavam-se também ali muitas mulheres que olhavam de longe, as quais tinham seguido Jesus desde a Galileia, subministrando-lhe o necessário.
Among whom was Mary Magdalen, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.56 Entre elas estava Maria Madalena, Maria, mãe de Tiago e de José, e a mãe dos filhos de Zebedeu.
And when it was evening, there came a certain rich man of Arimathea, named Joseph, who also himself was a disciple of Jesus.57 Pela tarde, veio um homem rico de Arimateia, chamado José, que também era discípulo de Jesus.
He went to Pilate, and asked the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded that the body should be delivered.58 Foi ter com Pilatos, e pediu-lhe o corpo de Jesus. Pilatos mandou então que lhe fosse dado o corpo.
And Joseph taking the body, wrapped it up in a clean linen cloth.59 José, tomando o corpo, envolveu-o num lençol branco,
And laid it in his own new monument, which he had hewed out in a rock. And he rolled a great stone to the door of the monument, and went his way.60 e depositou-o no seu sepulcro novo, o qual tinha mandado abrir numa rocha. Depois rolou uma grande pedra para diante da boca do sepulcro, e retirou-se.
And there was there Mary Magdalen, and the other Mary sitting over against the sepulchre.61 Maria Madalena e a outra Maria estavam lá, sentadas defronte do supulcro.
And the next day, which followed the day of preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees came together to Pilate,62 No outro dia, que é o seguinte à Preparação, os príncipes dos sacerdotes e os fariseus foram juntos ter com Pilatos,
Saying: Sir, we have remembered, that that seducer said, while he was yet alive: After three days I will rise again.63 e disseram-lhe: "Senhor, estamos recordados que aquele impostor, quando ainda vivia, disse: Ressuscitarei depois de três dias.
Command therefore the sepulchre to be guarded until the third day: lest perhaps his disciples come and steal him away, and say to the people: He is risen from the dead; and the last error shall be worse than the first.64 Ordena, pois, que seja guardado o sepulcro até ao terceiro dia, a fim de que não venham os seus discípulos, o furtem, e digam ao povo: Ressuscitou dos mortos. Desta sorte, o último embuste seria pior do que o primeiro."
Pilate saith to them: You have a guard; go, guard it as you know.65 Pilatos respondeu-lhes: "Tendes uma guarda, ide, guardai-o como entenderdes.
And they departing, made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting guards.66 Foram, e tomaram bem conta do sepulcro, selando a pedra e pondo lá uma guarda.
