Sirach 51

1 Simon the high priest, the son of Onias, who in his life propped up the house, and in his days fortified the temple.	1 Preisen will ich dich, o Herr, du König, ich will dich loben, du Gott meines Heils! ich will deinen Namen preisen, [du Hort meines Lebens]!
2 By him also the height of the temple was founded, the double building and the high walls of the temple.	2 denn Beschützer und Helfer bist du mir geworden und hast meinen Leib vor der Grube (g) bewahrt [und meinen Fuß der Gewalt der Unterwelt entrissen (g)] und mich aus der Schlinge der verleumderischen Zunge gerettet; vor den Lippen derer, die mit Lügen umgehen, hast du mich beschützt und bist mir ein Helfer gegen meine Widersacher gewesen;
3 In his days the wells of water flowed out, and they were filled as the sea above measure.	3 und du hast mich gerettet nach der Fülle deines Erbarmens aus der Schlinge derer, die mich zu verschlingen gedachten, aus der Gewalt derer, die mir nach dem Leben trachteten, aus den vielen Nöten, die ich erlitt,
4 He took care of his nation, and delivered it from destruction.	4 von der Erstickung durch den Brand rings um mich her und mitten aus dem Feuer, das ich nicht angezündet hatte,
5 He prevailed to enlarge the city, and obtained glory in his conversation with the people: and enlarged the entrance of the house and the court.	5 aus der Tiefe des Schoßes der Unterwelt, von der unreinen Zunge und den lügnerischen Reden, von den Pfeilen (g) der falschen Zunge.
6 He shone in his days as the morning star in the midst of a cloud, and as the moon at the full.	6 Meine Seele war bis in die Nähe des Todes gekommen, und mein Leben war dem Totenreich drunten nahe:
7 And as the sun when it shineth, so did he shine in the temple of God.	7 da wandte ich mich nach allen Seiten (g), doch da war kein Helfer, und ich blickte aus nach einer Stütze von Menschen, doch ich fand keine.
8 And as the rainbow giving light in the bright clouds, and as the flower of roses in the days of the spring, and as the lilies that are on the brink of the water, and as the sweet smelling frankincense in the time of summer.	8 Da gedachte ich deiner Barmherzigkeit, o Herr, und deines Waltens von Ewigkeit her, daß du die rettest, die auf dich hoffen, und sie aus der Gewalt ihrer Feinde rettest.
9 As a bright Are, and frankincense burning in the fire.	9 Da ließ ich von der Erde mein Flehen aufsteigen und betete um Errettung vom Tode.
10 As a massy vessel of gold, adorned with every precious stone.	10 Ich rief den Herrn an, den Vater meines Herrn (?), daß er mich nicht verlasse in den Tagen der Trübsal, zur Zeit der Übermütigen in meiner Hilflosigkeit.
11 As an olive tree budding forth, and a cypress tree rearing itself on high, when he put on the robe of glory, and was clothed with the perfection of power.	11 Loben will ich deinen Namen immerdar und dir lobsingen mit Danksagung. Da hörte der Herr auf meine Stimme und achtete auf mein Flehen (g);
12 When he went up to the holy altar, he honoured the vesture of holiness.	12 und er befreite mich aus allem Übel (g) und errettete mich zur Zeit der Not. Darum will ich dir danken und dir lobsingen und preisen den Namen des Herrn.
13 And when he took the portions out of the hands of the priests, he himself stood by the altar. And about him was the ring of his brethren: and as the cedar planted in mount Libanus,	13 Als ich noch jung war, bevor ich auf Reisen ging, sucht ich die Weisheit sehnlich (?) in meinem Gebet.
14 And as branches of palm trees, they stood round about him, and all the sons of Aaron in their glory.	14 Vor dem Tempel bat ich um sie, und bis ans Ende will ich nach ihr trachten.
15 And the oblation of the Lord was in their hands, before all the congregation of Israel: and finishing his service, on the altar, to honour the offering of the most high Ring,	15 Sie erblühte gleich einer reifenden Traube, und mein Herz freute sich an ihr. Unter ihrer Leitung schritt mein Fuß auf gerader Bahn dahin; von meiner Jugendzeit an ging ich ihrer Spur nach.
16 He stretched forth his hand to make a libation, and offered of the blood of the grape.	16 Kaum hatte ich ihr mein Ohr geliehen, so nahm ich sie auf und gewann reiche Erkenntnis.
17 He poured out at the foot of the altar a divine odour to the most high Prince.	17 Fortschreiten ward mir durch sie zuteil; dem der mir Weisheit beibrachte, will ich Anerkennung zollen.
18 Then the sons of Aaron shouted, they sounded with beaten trumpets, and made a great noise to be heard for a remembrance before God.	18 Ich war dann darauf bedacht, sie zu betätigen; ich war eifrig bemüht, gut zu handeln, und wurde nicht zuschanden (g).
19 Then all the people together made haste, and fell down to the earth upon their faces, to adore the Lord their God, and to pray to the Almighty God the most High.	19 Meine Seele hat um sie gerungen, und in meinem ganzen Tun verfuhr ich mit Sorgfalt (h); meine Hände streckte ich zum Himmel aus und trauerte über meine Verfehlungen gegen sie.
20 And the singers lifted up their voices. and in the great house the sound of sweet melody was increased.	20 Ich richtete meinen Sinn auf sie und fand sie durch Reinheit (meines Herzens); Einsicht (g) gewann ich mit ihrer Unterstützung von Anfang an; darum will ich nie wieder von ihr lassen.
21 And the people in prayer besought the Lord the most High, until the worship of the Lord was perfected, and they had finished their office.	21 Mein Inneres ward erregt, nach ihr zu trachten; darum habe ich in ihr einen schönen Besitz erworben.
22 Then coming down, he lifted up his hands over all the congregation of the children of Israel, to give glory to God with his lips, and to glory in his name:	22 Der Herr hat mir die Zunge (= Beredsamkeit) als meinen Lohn verliehen; darum will ich ihn mit meinen Lippen preisen.
23 And he repeated his prayer, willing to shew the power of God.	23 Kehrt bei mir ein, ihr Unverständigen, und verweilt in meinem Hause der Belehrung!
24 And now pray ye to the God of all, who hath done great things in all the earth, who hath increased our days from our mother's womb, and hath done with us according to his mercy.	24 wie lange noch (g) wollt ihr Mangel daran leiden und sollen eure Seelen heiß danach dürsten?
25 May he grant us joyfulness of heart, and that there be peace in our days in Israel for ever:	25 Ich habe meinen Mund aufgetan und geredet: kommt, kauft, es kostet kein Geld!
26 That Israel may believe that the mercy of God is with us, to deliver us in his days.	26 Beugt euren Nacken unter das Joch, und eure Seele nehme Belehrung an; nahe ist sie denen, die sie suchen, und wer sich ihr hingibt, findet sie (g).
27 There are two nations which my soul abhorreth: and the third is no nation, which I hate:	27 Seht mit eigenen Augen, daß ich mich nur wenig bemüht und doch viele Ruhe für mich in ihr gefunden habe.
28 They that sit on mount Seir, and the Philistines, and the foolish people that dwell in Sichem.	28 Nehmt an der Belehrung teil in großer Zahl und erwerbt euch Silber und Gold durch sie.
29 Jesus the son of Sirach, of Jerusalem, hath written in this book the doctrine of wisdom and instruction, who renewed wisdom from his heart.	29 Eure Seele freue sich seiner Barmherzigkeit, und schämt euch seines Lobpreises nicht!
30 Blessed is he that is conversant in these good things: and he that layeth them up in his heart, shall be wise always.	30 Verrichtet euer Werk vor der Zeit, so wird er euch euren Lohn geben zu seiner (= rechter) Zeit.
31 For if he do them, he shall be strong to do all things: because the light of God guideth his steps.
