Proverbs 6

1 My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, thou hast engaged fast thy hand to a stranger.	1 Mon fils, si tu as répondu pour ton ami, si tu as engagé ta main à un étranger,
2 Thou art ensnared with the words of thy mouth, and caught with thy own words.	2 tu es enlacé par les paroles de ta bouche, et pris par ton propre langage.
3 Do therefore, my son, what I say, and deliver thyself: because thou art fallen into the hand of thy neighbour. Run about, make haste, stir up thy friend:	3 Fais donc ce que je te dis, mon fils, et délivre-toi toi-même, car tu es tombé entre les mains de ton prochain. Cours, hâte-toi, excite ton ami.
4 Give not sleep to thy eyes, neither let thy eyelids slumber.	4 N'accorde pas de sommeil à tes yeux, et que tes paupières ne s'assoupissent point.
5 Deliver thyself as a doe from the hand, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.	5 Dégage-toi, comme un daim, de la main du chasseur, et comme un oiseau de la main de l'oiseleur.
6 Go to the ant, O sluggard, and consider her ways, and learn wisdom:	6 Va vers la fourmi, ô paresseux, et considère sa conduite, et apprends la sagesse.
7 Which, although she hath no guide, nor master, nor captain,	7 N'ayant ni chef, ni maître, ni prince,
8 Provideth her meat for herself in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.	8 elle prépare durant l'été sa nourriture, et amasse pendant la moisson de quoi se nourrir.
9 How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou rise out of thy sleep?	9 Jusques à quand dormiras-tu, paresseux? Quand te lèveras-tu de ton sommeil?
10 Thou wilt sleep a little, thou wilt slumber a little, thou wilt fold thy hands a little to sleep:	10 Tu dormiras un peu, tu sommeilleras un peu, tu croiseras un peu les mains pour dormir,
11 And want shall come upon thee, as a traveller, and poverty as a man armed. But if thou be diligent, thy harvest shall come as a fountain, and want shall flee far from thee.	11 et l'indigence viendra à toi comme un voyageur, et la pauvreté comme un homme armé. Mais si tu es diligent, ta moisson jaillira comme une source, et l'indigence fuira loin de toi.
12 A man that is an apostate, an unprofitable man, walketh with a perverse mouth,	12 L'homme apostat est un homme inutile, il s'avance avec une bouche perverse.
13 He winketh with the eyes, presseth with the foot, speaketh with the finger.	13 Il fait signe des yeux, il frappe du pied, il parle avec les doigts;
14 With a wicked heart he deviseth evil, and at all times he soweth discord.	14 il trame le mal dans son coeur méchant, et en tout temps il sème des querelles.
15 To such a one his destruction shall presently come, and he shall suddenly be destroyed, and shall no longer have any remedy.	15 Sa ruine viendra soudain sur lui, et il sera brisé tout d'un coup et il n'aura plus de remède.
16 Six things there are, which the Lord hateth, and the seventh his soul detesteth:	16 Il y a six choses que hait le Seigneur, et une septième que Son âme déteste:
17 Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,	17 les yeux altiers, la langue menteuse, les mains qui répandent le sang innocent,
18 A heart that deviseth wicked plots, feet that are swift to run into mischief,	18 le coeur qui médite des desseins très coupables, les pieds agiles pour courir au mal,
19 A deceitful witness that uttereth lies, and him that soweth discord among brethren.	19 le témoin trompeur qui profère des mensonges, et celui qui sème des dissensions entre les frères.
20 My son, beep the commandments of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother.	20 Observe, mon fils, les préceptes de ton père, et n'abandonne pas la loi de ta mère.
21 Bind them in thy heart continually, and put them about thy neck.	21 Tiens-les sans cesse liés dans ton coeur, et attache-les autour de ton cou.
22 When thou walkest, let them go with thee: when thou sleepest, let them keep thee; and when thou awakest, talk with them.	22 Lorsque tu marches, qu'ils t'accompagnent; lorsque tu dors, qu'ils te gardent, et à ton réveil entretiens-toi avec eux.
23 Because the commandment is a lamp, and the law a light, and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:	23 Car le précepte est une lampe, et la loi une lumière, et la réprimande qui retient dans la discipline est la voie de la vie;
24 That they may keep thee from the evil woman, and from the flattering tongue of the stranger.	24 pour te préserver de la femme corrompue, et de la langue flatteuse de l'étrangère.
25 Let not thy heart covet her beauty, be not caught with her winks:	25 Que ton coeur ne convoite pas sa beauté, et ne te laisse pas prendre par ses regards;
26 For the price of a harlot is scarce one loaf: but the woman catcheth the precious soul of a man.	26 car le prix de la courtisane est à peine d'un pain, mais la femme rend captive l'âme précieuse de l'homme.
27 Can a man hide fire in his bosom, and his garments not burn?	27 Un homme peut-il cacher le feu dan son sein, sans que ses vêtements soient consumés?
28 Or can he walk upon hot coals, and his feet not be burnt?	28 ou marcher sur des charbons ardents sans se brûler la plante des pieds?
29 So he that goeth in to his neighbour's wife, shall not be clean when he shall touch her.	29 Ainsi celui qui s'approche de la femme de son prochain ne sera pas pur lorsqu'il l'aura touchée.
30 The fault is not so great when a man hath stolen: for he stealeth to fill his hungry soul:	30 Ce n'est pas une grande faute qu'un homme dérobe, s'il dérobe pour rassasier sa faim.
31 And if he be taken he shall restore sevenfold, and shall give up all the substance of his house.	31 Et pourtant, s'il est pris, il en rendra sept fois autant, et il donnera tout ce qu'il a dans sa maison.
32 But he that is an adulterer, for the folly of his heart shall destroy his own soul:	32 Mais celui qui est adultère perdra son âme par la folie de son coeur.
33 He gathereth to himself shame and dishonour, and his reproach shall not be blotted out:	33 Il amasse sur lui la honte et l'ignominie, et son opprobre ne s'effacera pas;
34 Because the jealousy and rage of the husband will not spare in the day of revenge,	34 car la jalousie et la fureur du mari ne pardonnera point au jour de la vengeance;
35 Nor will he yield to any man's prayers, nor will he accept for satisfaction ever so many gifts.	35 et il ne se rendra aux prières de personne, et il ne recevra pas comme compensation des présents, même très nombreux.
