1 My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, thou hast engaged fast thy hand to a stranger.	1 Fiam, ha társadért jótálltál, ha kezedet adtad idegenért,
2 Thou art ensnared with the words of thy mouth, and caught with thy own words.	2 ha tulajdon szád szava csapdába ejtett, és rabbá tett saját beszéded,
3 Do therefore, my son, what I say, and deliver thyself: because thou art fallen into the hand of thy neighbour. Run about, make haste, stir up thy friend:	3 ahogy mondom, úgy tégy, fiam, hogy kilábalj, hiszen társad kezére kerültél. Menj! Sietve keltsd fel a társadat!
4 Give not sleep to thy eyes, neither let thy eyelids slumber.	4 Ne engedj alvást szemednek, és szendergést szempilláidnak!
5 Deliver thyself as a doe from the hand, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.	5 Vond ki magad, mint a gazella a hurokból, s a madár a madarász tőréből.
6 Go to the ant, O sluggard, and consider her ways, and learn wisdom:	6 Eredj a hangyához, te lusta! Nézd az útjait és okulj!
7 Which, although she hath no guide, nor master, nor captain,	7 Sem főnöke, sem tiszttartója, sem ura nincsen,
8 Provideth her meat for herself in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.	8 mégis megszerzi táplálékát nyáron, összegyűjti élelmét aratáskor.
9 How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou rise out of thy sleep?	9 Meddig heversz még, lusta? Mikor kelsz fel álmodból?
10 Thou wilt sleep a little, thou wilt slumber a little, thou wilt fold thy hands a little to sleep:	10 Alszol egy kevéssé, szenderegsz egy kissé, összeteszed kicsit a kezedet, hogy aludj,
11 And want shall come upon thee, as a traveller, and poverty as a man armed. But if thou be diligent, thy harvest shall come as a fountain, and want shall flee far from thee.	11 és beállít hozzád az ínség, mint a csavargó, s a nélkülözés, mint a fegyveres rabló! De ha serény vagy, akkor aratásod bő, mint a forrás, s az ínség messze elkerül.
12 A man that is an apostate, an unprofitable man, walketh with a perverse mouth,	12 Semmirekellő az istentelen ember, hamis szájjal jár,
13 He winketh with the eyes, presseth with the foot, speaketh with the finger.	13 hunyorgat szemével, sikál a lábával, és jelet ad ujjával,
14 With a wicked heart he deviseth evil, and at all times he soweth discord.	14 álnok szívvel gonoszt forral és viszályt hint el szüntelen!
15 To such a one his destruction shall presently come, and he shall suddenly be destroyed, and shall no longer have any remedy.	15 Az ilyenre hirtelen rászakad romlása, váratlanul összeroppan, és nincs számára gyógyulás.
16 Six things there are, which the Lord hateth, and the seventh his soul detesteth:	16 Hat dolgot gyűlöl az Úr és hetet utál a lelke:
17 Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,	17 a fennhéjázó szemet, a hazug nyelvet, az ártatlan vért ontó kezet,
18 A heart that deviseth wicked plots, feet that are swift to run into mischief,	18 az álnok tervet forraló szívet, a gonoszra sebtében siető lábakat,
19 A deceitful witness that uttereth lies, and him that soweth discord among brethren.	19 a hamis tanút, aki ontja a hazugságot, és azt, aki viszályt hint testvérek közé.
20 My son, beep the commandments of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother.	20 Tartsd meg, fiam, atyád parancsait, és el ne hagyd anyád tanítását!
21 Bind them in thy heart continually, and put them about thy neck.	21 Kösd őket szívedre mindenkor, fűzd őket nyakad köré!
22 When thou walkest, let them go with thee: when thou sleepest, let them keep thee; and when thou awakest, talk with them.	22 Hadd járjanak veled jöttödben-mentedben, őrködjenek fölötted, amikor alszol, és velük társalogj, amikor felébredsz!
23 Because the commandment is a lamp, and the law a light, and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:	23 Mert a parancs fáklya, a tanítás világosság, s a fegyelem feddése az életre vezető út,
24 That they may keep thee from the evil woman, and from the flattering tongue of the stranger.	24 hogy megóvjanak a rossz asszonytól, az idegen nő hízelkedő nyelvétől!
25 Let not thy heart covet her beauty, be not caught with her winks:	25 Meg ne kívánd szépségét szívedben, és meg ne ejtsenek az ő kacsintásai!
26 For the price of a harlot is scarce one loaf: but the woman catcheth the precious soul of a man.	26 Mert a céda személy díja alig ér egy kenyeret, a férjes asszony azonban drága lélekre vadász.
27 Can a man hide fire in his bosom, and his garments not burn?	27 Vehet-e ember tüzet az ölébe úgy, hogy ruhái meg ne égjenek?
28 Or can he walk upon hot coals, and his feet not be burnt?	28 Járhat-e valaki izzó parázson úgy, hogy talpát meg ne perzselje?
29 So he that goeth in to his neighbour's wife, shall not be clean when he shall touch her.	29 Így jár, aki betér társa asszonyához, aki őt érinti, nem marad büntetlen!
30 The fault is not so great when a man hath stolen: for he stealeth to fill his hungry soul:	30 Nem nagy bűnt követ el a tolvaj, ha azért lop, hogy csillapítsa éhségét,
31 And if he be taken he shall restore sevenfold, and shall give up all the substance of his house.	31 mégis, ha rajtakapják, hétannyit fizet, oda kell adnia háza minden holmiját.
32 But he that is an adulterer, for the folly of his heart shall destroy his own soul:	32 De az ember, aki házasságot tör, balgaságában vesztébe rohan.
33 He gathereth to himself shame and dishonour, and his reproach shall not be blotted out:	33 Csúfságot és szégyent von magára, és gyalázatát le nem mossa semmi,
34 Because the jealousy and rage of the husband will not spare in the day of revenge,	34 mert a férfi féltékenysége és haragja nem ismer kíméletet a bosszú napján,
35 Nor will he yield to any man's prayers, nor will he accept for satisfaction ever so many gifts.	35 nem enged senki könyörgésének, és váltságul nem fogad el semekkora ajándékot.
