DOUAI-RHEIMSEL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
He that hath a mind to depart from a friend seeketh occasions: he shall ever be subject to reproach.1 El que vive aislado sigue sus caprichos y se irrita contra todo sano consejo.
A fool receiveth not the words of prudence: unless thou say those things which are in his heart.2 El insensato no desea comprender, sino revelar sus propias opiniones.
The wicked man when he is come into the depth of sine, contemneth: but ignominy and reproach follow him.3 Junto con la maldad, llega la ignominia, y con la pérdida del honor, el desprecio.
Words from the mouth of a men are as deep water: and the fountain of wisdom as an overflowing stream.4 Aguas profundas son las palabras de un hombre, torrente desbordante es la fuente de la sabiduría.
It is not good to accept the person of the wicked, to decline from the truth of judgment.5 No está bien rehabilitar al malvado, perjudicando al justo en el juicio.
The lips of a fool intermeddle with strife: and his mouth provoketh quarrels.6 Los labios del insensato promueven litigios y su boca incita a golpear.
The mouth of a fool is his destruction: and his lips are the ruin of his soul.7 La boca del insensato es su ruina y sus labios, una trampa para su vida.
The words of the double tongued are as if they were harmless: and they reach even to the inner parts of the bowels. Fear casteth down the slothful: and the souls of the effeminate shall be hungry.8 Las palabras del detractor son como golosinas que bajan hasta el fondo de las entrañas.
He that is loose and slack in his work, is the brother of him that wasteth his own works.9 El que se deja estar en su trabajo es hermano del que destruye.
The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the just runneth to it, and shall be exalted.10 El nombre del Señor es una torre fortificada: el justo corre hacia ella y se pone a salvo.
The substance of the rich man is the city of his strength, and as a strong wall compassing him about.11 La fortuna del rico es su plaza fuerte, se la imagina como un muro inexpugnable.
Before destruction, the heart of a man is exalted: and before he be glorified, it is humbled.12 Antes de la ruina el hombre se ensoberbece, pero la humildad precede a la gloria.
He that answereth before he heareth sheweth himself to be a fool, and worthy of confusion.13 El que responde antes de escuchar muestra su necedad y se atrae el oprobio.
The spirit of a man upholdeth his infirmity: but a spirit that is easily angered, who can bear?14 El espíritu de un hombre lo sostiene en su enfermedad, pero ¿quién levantará a un espíritu abatido?
A wise heart shall acquire knowledge: and the ear of the wise seeketh instruction.15 Un corazón inteligente adquiere conocimiento, y el oído de los sabios busca la ciencia.
A man's gift enlargeth his may, and maketh him room before princes.16 Un reglo abre paso al que lo da y lo introduce en la presencia de los grandes.
The just is first accuser of himself: his friend cometh, and shall search him.17 El primero en defender su causa tiene razón, hasta que llega la parte adversa y lo impugna.
The lot suppresseth contentions, and determineth even between the mighty.18 Las suertes ponen fin a los litigios y deciden entre los poderosos.
A brother that is helped by his brother, is like a strong city: and judgments are like the bars of cities.19 Un hermano ofendido es más irreductible que una plaza fuerte, y los litigios son como cerrojo de ciudadela.
Of the fruit of a man's mouth shall his belly be satisfied: and the offspring of his lips shall fill him.20 El hombre sacia su estómago con el fruto de sus palabras: cada uno se sacia con lo que sale de sus labios.
Death and life are in the power of the tongue: they that love it, shall eat the fruits thereof.21 La muerte y la vida dependen de la lengua, y los que son indulgentes con ella comerán de su fruto.
He that hath found a good wife, hath found a good thing, and shall receive a pleasure from the Lord. He that driveth away a good wife, driveth away a good thing: but he that keepeth an adulteress, is foolish and wicked.22 El que encontró una mujer encontró la felicidad y obtuvo el favor del Señor.
The poor will speak with supplications, and the rich will speak roughly.23 El pobre habla suplicando, pero el rico responde duramente.
A man amiable in society, shall be more friendly than a brother.24 Hay compañeros que llevan a la ruina y hay amigos más apegados que un hermano.
