1 And Job answered, and said:	1 Giobbe prese la parola e disse:
2 Indeed I know it is so, and that man cannot be justified compared with	2 "Certo, so che è così; come può un uomo essere giusto davanti a Dio?
3 If he will contend with him, he cannot answer him one for a thousand.	3 Se uno volesse disputare con lui, non gli risponderebbe una volta su mille.
4 He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who hath resisted him, and hath had peace ?	4 Chi, saggio di mente e potente per la forza, gli si è opposto ed è rimasto illeso?
5 Who hath removed mountains, and they whom he overthrew in his wrath, knew it not.	5 Egli sposta le montagne senza che se ne avvedano e le sconvolge nella sua collera.
6 Who shaketh the earth out of her place, and the pillars thereof tremble.	6 Egli scuote la terra dal suo posto e le sue colonne vacillano.
7 Who commandeth tile sun and it riseth not: and shutteth up the stars as it were under a seal:	7 Ordina al sole di non sorgere e mette un sigillo alle stelle.
8 Who alone spreadeth out the heavens, and walketh upon the waves of the sea.	8 Egli da solo dispiega i cieli e cammina sulle onde del mare.
9 Who maketh Arcturus, and Orion, and Hyades, and the inner parts of the south.	9 Egli forma l'Orsa e l'Orione, le Pleiadi e le Costellazioni del sud.
10 Who doth things great and incomprehensible, and wonderful, of which there is no number.	10 Compie prodigi insondabili e meraviglie senza numero.
11 If he come to me, I shall not see him: if he depart I shall not understand.	11 Ecco, mi passa vicino e non lo vedo, se ne va, e di lui non mi accorgo.
12 If he examine on a sudden, who shall answer him? or who can say: Why dost thou so?	12 Se rapisce qualcosa, chi lo può impedire? Chi può dirgli: "Che cosa fai?".
13 God, whose wrath no mall can resist, and under whom they stoop that bear up the world.	13 Dio non ritira la sua collera, sotto di lui si curvano le legioni di Raab.
14 What am I then, that I should answer him, and have words with him?	14 Tanto meno potrei io rispondergli o scegliere argomenti contro di lui.
15 I, who although I should have any just thing, would not answer, but would make supplication to my judge.	15 Anche se avessi ragione non riceverei risposta, dovrei chiedere grazia al mio avversario.
16 And if he should hear me when I call, I should not believe that he had heard my voice.	16 Anche se rispondesse al mio appello, non crederei che ha ascoltato la mia voce,
17 For he shall crush me in a whirlwind, and multiply my wounds even without cause.	17 lui, che mi schiaccia nell'uragano e moltiplica senza ragione le mie ferite.
18 He alloweth not my spirit to rest, and he filleth me with bitterness.	18 Non mi lascia riprendere fiato, anzi mi sazia di amarezze.
19 If strength be demanded, he is most strong: if equity of judgment, no man dare bear witness for me.	19 Se si tratta di forza, è lui il vigoroso; se si tratta di giudizio, chi lo farà comparire?
20 If I would justify myself, my own mouth shall condemn me: if I would shew myself innocent, he shall prove me wicked.	20 Anche se fossi innocente, il mio parlare mi condannerebbe; se fossi giusto, mi dichiarerebbe perverso.
21 Although I should be simple, even this my soul shall be ignorant of, and I shall be weary of my life.	21 Sono innocente? Non lo so neppure io; detesto la mia vita.
22 One thing there is that I have spoken, both the innocent and the wicked he consumeth.	22 Però è lo stesso, ve lo assicuro, egli fa perire l'innocente e il reo!
23 If he scourge, let him kill at once, and not laugh at the pains of the innocent.	23 Se una calamità miete vittime in un istante, egli se ne ride della disgrazia degl'innocenti.
24 The earth is given into the hand of the wicked, he covereth the face of the judges thereof: and if it be not he, who is it then?	24 Lascia la terra nel potere dei malvagi, egli vela il volto dei suoi governanti. Se non è lui, chi dunque può essere?
25 My days have been swifter than a post: they have fled away and have not seen good.	25 I miei giorni passano più veloci di un corriere, fuggono senza gustare felicità.
26 They have passed by as ships carrying fruits, as an eagle flying to the prey.	26 Scorrono veloci come barche di giunco, come aquila che piomba sulla preda.
27 If I say: I will not speak so: I change my face, and am tormented with sorrow.	27 Se dico: "Voglio dimenticare la mia afflizione, cambiare il mio volto ed essere lieto",
28 I feared all my works, knowing that thou didst not spare the offender.	28 mi spavento per tutte le sofferenze; e poi so che tu non mi assolverai.
29 But if so also I am wicked, why have I laboured in vain?	29 Se sono colpevole, perché affaticarmi invano?
30 If I be washed as it were with snow waters, and my hands shall shine ever so clean :	30 Anche se mi lavassi con la neve e pulissi le mie mani con la potassa,
31 Yet thou shalt plunge me in filth, and my garments shall abhor me,	31 tu mi tufferesti nel fango e le mie vesti mi avrebbero in orrore.
32 For I shall not answer a man that is like myself: nor one that may be heard with me equally in judgment.	32 Egli, infatti, non è un uomo come me, cui possa replicare, e che insieme compariamo in giudizio.
33 There is none that may be able to reprove both, and to put his hand between both.	33 Non c'è un giudice tra noi che ponga la mano su noi due,
34 Let him take his rod away from me, and let not his fear terrify me.	34 che allontani da me la sua verga, in modo che il suo terrore non mi spaventi.
35 I will speak, and will not fear him: for I cannot answer while I am in fear.	35 Allora potrei parlare senza temerlo; poiché non è così, sono solo con me stesso.
