DOUAI-RHEIMSPattloch Bibel
There was a man in the land of Hus, whose name was Job, and that man was simple and upright, and fearing God, and avoiding evil.1 Ein Mann lebte im Lande Uz, sein Name war Job; und dieser Mann war fromm und recht, gottesfürchtig und dem Bösen fern.
And there were born to him seven sons and three daughters.2 Geboren wurden ihm der Söhne sieben und der Töchter drei.
And his possession was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a family exceeding great: and this man was great among all the people of the east.3 Sein Besitz bestand aus siebentausend Schafen, dreitausend Kamelen, fünfhundert Joch Rindern, fünfhundert Eselinnen und sehr zahlreichem Gesinde; und es übertraf dieser Mann alle Bewohner des Ostens.
And his sons went, and made a feast by houses every one in his day. And sending they called their three sisters to eat and drink with them.4 Seine Söhne aber pflegten ein Gastmahl zu halten jeweils im Hause und am Tag dessen, der an der Reihe war; sie sandten hin und luden auch ihre drei Schwestern ein, mit ihnen zu essen und zu trinken.
And when the days of their feasting were gone about, Job sent to them, and sanctified them: and rising up early offered holocausts for every one of them. For he said: Lest perhaps my sons have sinned, and have blessed God in their hearts. So tat Job an allen diesen Tagen.
Now on a certain day when the sons of God came to stand before the Lord, Satan also was present among them.6 Es geschah aber eines Tages, daß die Gottessöhne kamen, um vor den Herrn hinzutreten, und unter ihnen kam auch der Satan.
And the Lord said to him: Whence comest thou ? And he answered and said: I have gone round about the earth, and walked through it.7 Da sprach der Herr zum Satan: "Woher kommst du?"
And the Lord said to him: Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a simple and upright man, and fearing God, and avoiding evil?8 Da sprach der Herr zum Satan: "Hast du meinen Knecht Job beachtet? Es gibt ja seinesgleichen keinen auf Erden: fromm und recht, gottesfürchtig und dem Bösen fern!"
And Satan answering, said: Doth Job fear God in vain ?9 Der Satan erwiderte dem Herrn und sprach: "Ist es umsonst, daß Job Gott fürchtet?
Hast not thou made a fence for him, and his house, and all his substance round about, blessed the works of his hands, and his possession hath increased on the earth ?10 Umhegst du nicht ihn und sein Haus und alles, was sein ist ringsumher?
But stretch forth thy hand a little, and touch all that he hath, and see if he blesseth thee not to thy face.11 Aber strecke einmal deine Hand aus und taste alles, was sein ist, an!
Then the Lord said to Satan: Behold, all that he hath is in thy hand: only put not forth thy hand upon his person.
Now upon a certain day when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their eldest brother,13 Da geschah es eines Tages, während seine Söhne und Töchter im Hause ihres erstgeborenen Bruders speisten und Wein tranken,
There came a messenger to Job, and said: The oxen were ploughing, and the asses feeding beside them,14 daß ein Bote zu Job kam und sprach: "Die Rinder waren beim Pflügen, und die Eselinnen weideten daneben.
And the Sabeans rushed in, and took all away, and slew the servants with the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell thee.15 Da fielen Sabäer ein, nahmen sie weg, und die Knechte erschlugen sie mit scharfem Schwert; nur ich allein bin entkommen, es dir zu melden."
And while he was yet speaking, another came, and said: The fire of God fell from heaven, and striking the sheep and the servants, hath consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell thee.16 Noch redete dieser, da kam schon ein anderer und sprach: "Feuer Gottes fiel vom Himmel, brannte bei den Schafen und Knechten und verzehrte sie; nur ich allein bin entkommen, es dir zu melden."
And while he also was yet speaking, there came another, and said: The Chaldeans made three troops, and have fallen upon the camels, and taken them, moreover they have slain the servants with the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell thee.17 Noch redete dieser, da kam schon ein anderer und sprach: "Kaldäer stellten drei Heerscharen auf, und diese fielen über die Kamele her und nahmen sie weg, und die Knechte erschlugen sie mit scharfem Schwert; nur ich allein bin entkommen, es dir zu melden."
He was yet speaking, and behold another came in, and said: Thy sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their elder brother:18 Noch redete dieser, da kam schon ein anderer und sprach: "Deine Söhne und Töchter speisten und tranken Wein im Hause ihres erstgeborenen Bruders.
A violent wind came on a sudden from the side of the desert, and shook the four corners of the house, and it fell upon thy children and they are dead, and I alone have escaped to fell thee.19 Sieh, da kam ein mächtiger Wind von jenseits der Wüste und stieß an die vier Ecken des Hauses; es stürzte über den Kindern zusammen und sie starben; nur ich allein bin entkommen, es dir zu melden."
Then Job rose up, and rent his garments, and having shaven his head fell down upon the ground and worshipped,20 Da erhob sich Job, zerriß sein Gewand, schor sein Haupt, fiel zur Erde nieder, beugte sich anbetend und sprach:
And said: Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away: as it hath pleased the Lord so is it done: blessed be the name of the Lord.21 "Nackt kam ich hervor aus dem Schoß meiner Mutter, und nackt kehre ich dorthin zurück. Der Herr hat gegeben, der Herr hat genommen, der Name des Herrn sei gepriesen!"
In all these things Job sinned not by his lips, nor spoke he any foolish thing against God.22 Bei all dem hat Job nicht gesündigt und gegen Gott nichts Törichtes geäußert.
