1 After this there went a man of the house of Levi; and took a wife of his own kindred.	1 Quelque temps après, un homme de la maison de Lévi ayant épousé une femme de la tribu,
2 And she conceived, and bore a son; and seeing him a goodly child hid him three months.	2 Sa femme conçut et enfanta un fils, et, voyant qu'il était beau, elle le cacha pendant trois mois.
3 And when she could hide him no longer, she took a basket made of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and pitch: and put the little babe therein, and laid him in the sedges by the river's brink,	3 Mais comme elle vit qu'elle ne pouvait plus tenir la chose secrète, elle prit un panier de jonc, et, l'ayant enduit de bitume et de poix, elle mit dedans le petit enfant, l'exposa parmi les roseaux de la rive du fleuve,
4 His sister standing afar off, and taking notice what would be done.	4 Et fit tenir sa soeur à quelque distance, pour voir ce qui arriverait.
5 And behold the daughter of Pharao came down to wash herself in the river: and her maids walked by the river's brink. And when she saw the basket in the sedges, she sent one of her maids for it: and when it was brought,	5 Or voici que la fille du Pharaon vint au fleuve pour se baigner, accompagnée de ses suivantes, qui marchaient le long du bord de l'eau. Et, ayant aperçu ce panier parmi les roseaux, elle envoya une de ses filles qui le lui apporta.
6 She opened it and seeing within it an infant crying, having compassion on it she said: This is one of the babes of the Hebrews.	6 Elle l'ouvrit, et, trouvant dedans ce petit enfant qui criait, elle fut touchée de compassion, et elle dit: C'est un des enfants des Hébreux.
7 And the child's sister said to her Shall I go and call to thee a Hebrew woman, to nurse the babe ?	7 La soeur de l'enfant, s'étant approchée, lui dit: Vous plaît-il que je vous aille chercher une femme des Hébreux qui puisse nourrir ce petit enfant?
8 She answered: Go. The maid went and called her mother.	8 Elle lui répondit: Allez. La jeune fille s'en alla donc, et fit venir sa mère.
9 And Pharao's daughter said to her. Take this child and nurse him for me: I will give thee thy wages. The woman took, and nursed the child: and when he was grown up, she delivered him to Pharao's daughter.	9 La fille du Pharaon lui dit: Prenez cet enfant et nourrissez-le-moi, et je vous en récompenserai. La mère prit l'enfant et le nourrit; et lorsqu'il fut assez fort, elle le donna à la fille du Pharaon,
10 And she adopted him for a son, and called him Moses, saying: Because I took him out of the water.	10 Qui l'adopta pour son fils et le nomma Moïse; car, disait-elle, je l'ai tiré de l'eau.
11 In those days after Moses was grown up, he went out to his brethren: and saw their affliction, and an Egyptian striking one of the Hebrews his brethren.	11 En ces jours, lorsque Moïse fut devenu grand, il sortit pour aller voir ses frères. Il vit leur affliction et un Egyptien qui frappait un Hébreu d'entre ses frères.
12 And when he had looked about this way and that way, and saw no one there, he slew the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.	12 Il regarda de côté et d'autre, et, ne voyant personne auprès de lui, il tua l'Egyptien et le cacha dans le sable.
13 And going out the next day, he saw two Hebrews quarreling: and he said to him that did the wrong: Why strikest thou thy neighbour?	13 Le lendemain, il trouva deux Hébreux qui se querellaient, et il dit à celui qui outrageait l'autre: Pourquoi frappez-vous votre frère?
14 But he answered: Who hath appointed thee prince and judge over us: wilt thou kill me, as thou didst yesterday kill the Egyptian? Moses feared, and said: How is this come to be known ?	14 Cet homme répondit: Qui vous a établi chef et juge sur nous? Est-ce que vous voulez me tuer, comme vous avez tué hier un Egyptien? Moïse eut peur, et il dit: Comment cela s'est-il découvert?
15 And Pharao heard of this word and sought to kill Moses: but he fled from his sight, and abode in the land of Madian, and he sat down by a well.	15 Le Pharaon, en ayant été averti, cherchait à faire mourir Moïse. Mais celui-ci se cacha et s'enfuit au pays de Madian, où il s'arrêta, et s'assit près d'un puits.
16 And the priest of Madian had seven daughters, who came to draw water: and when the troughs were filled, desired to water their father's flocks.	16 Or le prêtre de Madian avait sept filles, qui, étant venues pour puiser de l'eau et en ayant rempli les canaux, voulaient faire boire les troupeaux de leur père.
17 And the shepherds came and drove them away: and Moses arose, and defending the maids, watered their sheep.	17 Mais des pasteurs, étant survenus, les chassèrent. Alors Moïse, se levant et prenant la défense de ces filles, fit boire leurs brebis.
18 And when they returned to Raguel their father, he said to them: Why are ye come sooner than usual?	18 Lorsqu'elles furent retournées chez Raguël leur père, il leur dit: Pourquoi êtes-vous revenues plus tôt qu'à l'ordinaire?
19 They answered: A man of Egypt delivered us from the hands of the shepherds: and he drew water also with us, and gave the sheep to drink.	19 Elles lui répondirent: Un Egyptien nous a délivrées de la violence des pasteurs, et il a même tiré de l'eau avec nous et a donné à boire à nos brebis.
20 But he said: Where is he? why have you let the man go? call him that he may eat bread.	20 Où est-il? dit leur père. Pourquoi avez-vous laissé aller cet homme? Appelez-le, afin que nous le fassions manger.
21 And Moses swore that he would dwell with him. And he took Sephora his daughter to wife:	21 Moïse lui jura donc qu'il demeurerait avec lui. Il épousa ensuite sa fille, qui s'appelait Séphora.
22 And she bore him a son, whom he called Gersam, saying: I have been a stranger in a foreign country. And she bore another, whom he called Eliezer, saying: For the God of my father, my helper hath delivered me out of the hand of Pharao.	22 Et elle lui enfanta un fils, qu'il nomma Gersam, en disant: J'ai été voyageur dans une terre étrangère. Elle eut encore un autre fils, qu'il nomma Eliézer, en disant: Le Dieu de mon père, qui est mon protecteur, m'a délivré de la main du Pharaon.
23 Now after a long time the king of Egypt died: and the children of Israel groaning, cried out because of the works: and their cry went up unto God from the works.	23 Longtemps après, le roi d'Egypte mourut, et les enfants d'Israël, gémissant sous le poids des ouvrages qui les accablaient, poussèrent de grands cris, et ces cris, que tirait d'eux l'exces de leurs travaux, s'élevèrent jusqu'à Dieu.
24 And he heard their groaning, and remembered the covenant which he made with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.	24 Il entendit leurs gémissements, et Il Se souvint de l'alliance qu'Il avait faite avec Abraham, Isaac et Jacob.
25 And the Lord looked upon the children of Israel, and he knew them.	25 Et le Seigneur regarda favorablement les enfants d'Israël, et Il les reconnut pour Son peuple.
