DOUAI-RHEIMSSacra Bibbia Garofalo
And Roboam went to Sichem: for thither all Israel were assembled, to make him king.1 Roboamo si recò a Sichem, dove si era diretto tutto Israele per crearlo re.
And when Jeroboam the son of Nabat, who was in Egypt, (for he was fled thither from Solomon,) heard it, forthwith he returned.2 Ora, appena Geroboamo figlio di Nabat lo seppe, ritornò dall’Egitto, dove ancora si trovava — era infatti fuggito dal cospetto del re Salomone.
And they sent for him, and he came with all Israel, and they spoke to Roboam, saying:3 Convocato, Geroboamo giunse insieme con tutto Israele. Allora parlarono a Roboamo:
Thy father oppressed us with a most grievous yoke, do thou govern us with a lighter hand than thy father, who laid upon us a heavy servitude, and ease some thing of the burden, that we may serve thee.4 «Tuo padre ha reso duro il nostro giogo; ma tu ora alleggerisci la dura schiavitù di tuo padre e il giogo pesante, che ci ha imposto, e noi ti serviremo!»
And he said to them: Come to me again after three days. And when the people were gone,5 Quegli rispose loro: «Tornate da me fra tre giorni». Il popolo se ne andò.
He took counsel with the ancients, who had stood before his father Solomon, while he yet lived, saying: What counsel give you to me, that I may answer the people?6 Il re Roboamo si consultò con gli anziani che erano stati alla presenza di Salomone suo padre durante la sua vita. Disse loro: «Come mi consigliate di rispondere a questo “popolo?»
And they said to him: If thou please this people, and soothe them with kind words, they will be thy servants for ever.7 Quelli risposero a lui: «Se sarai buono con questo popolo e li accontenterai rivolgendo loro parole amiche, saranno per sempre tuoi servitori».
But he forsook the counsel of the ancients, end began to treat with the young men, that had been brought up with him, and were in his train.8 Ma egli trascurò il: consiglio che gli anziani gli avevano suggerito e si consigliò con i giovani che erano cresciuti con lui e stavano alla sua presenza.
And he said to them: What seemeth good to you? or what shall I answer this people, who have said to me: Ease the yoke which thy father laid upon us?9 Chiese loro: «E voi, che cosa mi consigliate di rispondere a questo popolo che mi ha detto: “Alleggerisci il giogo che tuo padre ci ha imposto”?»
But they answered as young men, and brought up with him in pleasures, and said: Thus shalt thou speak to the people, that said to thee: Thy father made our yoke heavy, do thou ease it: thus shalt thou answer them: My little finger is thicker than the loins of my father.10 I giovani, che erano cresciuti con lui, gli risposero: «Così parlerai al popolo che ti ha detto: “Tuo padre ha aggravato il: nostro giogo; tu però rendicelo più leggero!” così Tisponderai loro: “Il mio mignolo è più grosso dei lombi di mio padre!
My father laid upon you a heavy yoke, and I will add more weight to it: my father beat you with scourges, but I will beat you with scorpions.11 Ora mio padre vi ha caricato di un giogo pesante; ma io aggraverò di più il vostro giogo: Mio padre vi ha battuto con le sferze; ma io con gli scorpioni!”».
So Jeroboam, and all the people came to Roboam the third day, as he commanded them.12 Il terzo giorno; Geroboamo con tutto il popolo si recò da Roboamo secondo l’ordine del re: «Ritornate da me il terzo giorno».
And the king answered roughly, leaving the counsel of the ancients.13 Il re rispose al popolo in modo duro; il re Roboamo aveva trascurato il consiglio degli anziani
And he spoke according to the advice of the young men : My father laid upon you a heavy yoke, which I will make heavier: my father beat you with scourges, but I will beat you with scorpions.14 e parlò loro secondo il consiglio dei giovani: «Mio padre vi ha caricato di un giogo pesante ma io lo aggraverò di più! Mio padre vi ha battuto con le sferze ma io con gli scorpioni!»
And he condescended not to the people's requests: for it was the will of God, that his word might be fulfilled which he had spoken by the hand of Ahias the Silonite to Jeroboam the son of Nabat.15 Il re dunque non ascoltò il popolo; questo infatti avvenne per divina disposizione a compimento della parola che Jahvè aveva rivolto a Geroboamo figlio di Nabat per mezzo di Akhia da Silo.
And all the people upon the king's speaking roughly, said thus unto him: We have no part in David, nor inheritance in the son of Isai. Return to thy dwellings, O Israel, and do thou, O David, feed thy own house.
But Roboam reigned over the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Juda.17 e Roboamo regnò solo sui figli di Israele che abitavano nelle città di Giuda.
And king Roboam sent Aduram, who was over the tributes, and the children of Israel stoned him, and he died: and king Roboam made haste to gee up into his chariot, and fled into Jerusalem.18 Ora il re Roboamo inviò Adoniram, preposto alla leva; i figli di Israele però lo colpirono con sassi e quegli morì. Allora il re Roboamo montò in fretta su un carro per fuggire a Gerusalemme.
And Israel revolted from the house of David unto this day.19 In tale modo Israele incominciò la ribellione alla casa di David, la quale dura fino a oggi.
