1 And Joseph was brought into Egypt, and Putiphar an eunuch of Pharao, chief captain of the army, an Egyptian, bought him of the Ismaelites, by whom he was brought.	1 José foi, pois, conduzido ao Egito, e Putifar Egípcio, eunuco de Faraó e general do exército, comprou-o aos Ismaelitas, que o tinham levado.
2 And the Lord was with him, and he was a prosperous man in all things: and he dwelt in his master's house,	2 O Senhor era com ele, e tudo o que fazia lhe sucedia pròsperamente: habitava em casa do seu senhor,
3 Who knew very well that the Lord was with him, and made all that he did to prosper in his hand.	3 o qual conhecia muito bem que o Senhor era com ele, o qual (Deus) fazia prosperar em suas mãos tudo o que José fazia.
4 And Joseph found favour in the sight of his master, and ministered to him: and being set over all by him, he governed the house committed to him, and all things that were delivered to him:	4 José achou graça diante do Senhor, a quem prestava serviço: tendo recebido dele a superintendência de todas as coisas, governava a casa que lhe tinha sido confiada, e tudo o que lhe fora entregue.
5 And the Lord blessed the house of the Egyptian for Joseph's sake, and multiplied all his substance, both at home, and in the fields.	5 O Senhor abençoou a casa do Egípcio, por causa de José, e multiplicou todos os seus bens, tanto em casa como no campo.
6 dummy verses inserted by amos	6 (Putifar) não tinha outro cuidado que pôr-se à mesa a comer. José era de rosto formoso e aspecto gentil.
7 h And after many days his mistress 'cast her eyes on Joseph, and said: Lie with me.	7 Pelo que, passados muitos dias, lançou sua senhora os olhos sobre José e disse: Dorme comigo.
8 Neither knew he any other thing, but the bread which he ate. And Joseph was of a beautiful countenance, and comely to behold.	8 Mas de, não consentindo de modo algum na execrável acção, disse-lhe: Se o meu Senhor, tendo entregue tudo nas minhas mãos, não pede contas do que tem em sua casa,
	9 e nada há que não esteja em meu poder, ou que me não tenha sido confiada, excepto tu, que és sua mulher, como posso eu cometer esta maldade, e pecar contra o meu Deus?
10 But he, in no wise consenting to that wicked act, said to her: Behold, my master hath delivered all things to me, and knoweth not what he hath in his own house:	10 Ainda que, todos os dias, a mulher falasse (no mesmo assunto) ao jovem, ele recusava estar com ela.
11 Neither is there any thing which is hot in my power, or that he hath not delivered to me, but thee, who art his wife : how then can I do this wicked thing, and I sin against my God?	11 Mas aconteceu que, um dia, entrando José em casa, para fazer o seu serviço, sem que ninguém o visse,
12 With such words as these day by day, both the woman was importunate with the young man, and he refused the adultery.	12 ela, segurando-o pela orla do seu vestido, disse-lhe: Dorme comigo. Mas ele, deixando a capa na sua mão, fugiu e saiu para fora.
13 Now it happened on it certain day, that Joseph went into the house, and was doing some business without any, man with him:	13 A mulher, vendo a capa na suas mãos, e (vendo) que era desprezada,
14 And she catching the skirt of his garment, said: Lie with me. But he leaving the garment in her hand, fled, and went out.	14 chamou a si a gente da casa e disse: Vede, trouxe-nos este homem hebreu para zombar de nós; veio ter comigo para me seduzir, e, tendo eu gritado,
15 And when the woman saw the garment in her hands, and herself disregarded,	15 ele, ao ouvir a minha voz, deixou a capa, em que eu pegava, e fugiu para fora.
16 She called to her the men of her house, and said to them: See, he hath brought in a Hebrew, to abuse us: he came in to me, to lie with me : and when I cried out,	16 Em prova da sua fidelidade mostrou ao marido, quando ele voltou para casa, a capa com que tinha ficado,
17 dummy verses inserted by amos	17 e disse: Aquele servo hebreu, que trouxeste, veio ter comigo para abusar de mim:
18 And he heard my voice, he left the garment that I held, and got him out.	18 porém, ouvindo-me gritar, deixou a capa, em que eu pegava, e fugiu para fora.
	19 Ao ouvir isto, o senhor, demasiado crédulo nas palavras da mulher, irou-se em extremo
20 For a proof therefore of her fidelity, she kept the garment, and shewed it to her husband when he returned home:	20 e lançou José no cárcere, onde estavam detidos os presos do rei, e ali ficou ele encarcerado.
21 And said: The Hebrew servant, whom thou best brought, came to me to abuse me.	21 O Senhor, porém, foi com José; compadecido dele, fê-lo encontrar graça diante do governador da prisão,
22 And when he heard me cry, he left the garment which I held, and fled out.	22 o qual confiou à sua vigilância todos os presos que estavam no cárcere: tudo o que se fazia, era feito por sua ordem.
23 His master hearing these things, and giving too much credit to his wife's words, was very angry.	23 Nem sequer (o governador) tomava conhecimento de coisa alguma, depois que lhe confiou tudo, porque o Senhor era com ele e fazia prosperar todas as suas obras.
24 And cast Joseph into the prison, where the king's prisoners were kept, and he was there shut up.
25 But the Lord was with Joseph and having mercy upon him gave him favour in the sight of the chief keeper of the prison:
