1 Sai tu il tempo che le camozze delle rocce figliano? Hai tu osservato quando le cerve partoriscono?	1 Do you know when mountain goats give birth? Have you ever watched deer in labour?
2 Annoveri tu i mesi del termine del lor portato, E sai tu il tempo che devono figliare?	2 Have you ever counted the months that they carry their young? Do you know when they give birth?
3 Elle si chinano, fanno scoppiar fuori il lor feto, Si alleviano delle lor doglie.	3 They crouch to drop their young, they get rid of their burdens
4 I lor figli son gagliardi, crescono per le biade, Escono fuori, e non ritornano più a quelle.	4 and the calves, having grown big and strong, go off into the desert and never come back to them.
5 Chi ne ha mandato libero l’asino salvatico, E chi ha sciolti i suoi legami?	5 Who has given the wild donkey his freedom, who has undone the harness of the brayer?
6 A cui io ho ordinato il deserto per casa; E per abitazioni, i luoghi salsugginosi.	6 I have given him the wastelands as his home, the salt plain as his habitat.
7 Egli si beffa dello strepito della città; Egli non ode gli schiamazzi del sollecitator delle opere.	7 He scorns the turmoil of the town, obeys no donkey-man's shouts.
8 I monti, ch’egli va spiando, sono il suo pasco; Ed egli va ricercando qualunque verdura.	8 The mountains are the pastures that he ranges in quest of anything green.
9 Il liocorno ti vorrà egli servire? Si riparerà egli presso alla tua mangiatoia?	9 Is the wild ox willing to serve you or spend a night beside your manger?
10 Legherai tu il liocorno con la sua fune, per farlo arare al solco? Erpicherà egli le valli dietro a te?	10 If you tie a rope round his neck wil he harrow the furrows for you?
11 Ti fiderai tu in lui, perchè la sua forza è grande? E gli rimetterai tu il tuo lavoro?	11 Can you rely on his massive strength and leave him to do your heavy work?
12 Ti fiderai tu in lui ch’egli ti renda la ricolta della tua sementa, E ch’egli te l’accolga nella tua aia?	12 Can you depend on him to come home and pile your grain on your threshing-floor?
13 Le ale de’ paoni son esse vaghe per opera tua? Od ha da te lo struzzolo le penne e la piuma?	13 Can the wing of the ostrich be compared with the plumage of stork or falcon?
14 Fai tu ch’egli abbandoni le sue uova in su la terra, E che le lasci scaldare in su la polvere?	14 She leaves her eggs on the ground with only earth to warm them;
15 E che dimentichi che il piè d’alcuno le schiaccerà, Ovvero che le fiere della campagna le calpesteranno?	15 forgetting that a foot may tread on them or a wild animal crush them.
16 Egli è spietato inverso i suoi figli, come se non fosser suoi; Indarno è la sua fatica, egli è senza tema;	16 Cruel to her chicks as if they were not hers, little she cares if her labour goes for nothing.
17 Perciocchè Iddio l’ha privo di senno, E non l’ha fatto partecipe d’intendimento.	17 God, you see, has deprived her of wisdom and given her no share of intel igence.
18 Quando egli si solleva in alto, Egli si beffa del cavallo, e di colui che lo cavalca	18 Yet, if she bestirs herself to use her height, she can make fools of horse and rider too.
19 Hai tu data la forza al cavallo? Hai tu adorna la sua gola di fremito?	19 Are you the one who makes the horse so brave and covers his neck with flowing mane?
20 Lo spaventerai tu come una locusta? Il suo magnifico nitrire è spaventevole.	20 Do you make him leap like a grasshopper? His haughty neighing inspires terror.
21 Egli raspa nella valle, si rallegra della sua forza, Esce ad incontrare le armi.	21 Exultantly he paws the soil of the val ey, and charges the battle-line in all his strength.
22 Egli si beffa della paura, e non si spaventa, E non si volge indietro per la spada.	22 He laughs at fear; he is afraid of nothing, he recoils before no sword.
23 Il turcasso, e la folgorante lancia, E lo spuntone gli risuonano addosso.	23 On his back the quiver rattles, the flashing spear and javelin.
24 D’impazienza e di stizza pare ch’egli voglia trangugiar la terra; E non può credere che sia il suon della tromba.	24 Trembling with impatience, he eats up the miles; when the trumpet sounds, there is no holding him.
25 Come prima la tromba ha sonato, egli dice: Aha, Aha; Da lontano annasa la battaglia, Lo schiamazzo de’ capitani; e le grida	25 At each trumpet blast he neighs exultantly. He scents the battle from afar, the thundering of thecommanders and the war cry.
26 È per il tuo senno che lo sparviere vola? Che spiega le sue ali verso il mezzodì?	26 Is it your wisdom that sets the hawk flying when he spreads his wings to travel south?
27 L’aquila si leva ella ad alto per lo tuo comandamento? E fai tu ch’ella faccia il suo nido in luoghi elevati?	27 Does the eagle soar at your command to make her eyrie in the heights?
28 Ella dimora e si ripara nelle rupi, Nelle punte delle rocce, ed in luoghi inaccessibili.	28 She spends her nights among the crags with a needle of rock as her fortress,
29 Di là ella spia il pasto, Gli occhi suoi mirano da lontano.	29 from which she watches for prey, fixing it with her far-ranging eye.
30 I suoi aquilini ancora sorbiscono il sangue, E dove sono corpi morti, quivi ella si ritrova	30 Even her young drink blood; where anyone has been killed, she is there.
