DIODATI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 OR queste sono le leggi giudiciali, le quali tu proporrai loro:	1 'These are the laws you must give them:
2 Quando tu avrai comperato un servo Ebreo, servati egli sei anni; ma al settimo anno vadasene franco, senza pagar nulla.	2 'When you buy a Hebrew slave, his service will last for six years. In the seventh year he wil leave afree man without paying compensation.
3 Se egli è venuto sol col suo corpo, vadasene col suo corpo; se egli avea moglie, vadasene la sua moglie con lui.	3 If he came single, he wil depart single; if he came married, his wife wil depart with him.
4 Se il suo signore gli ha data moglie, la quale gli abbia partoriti figliuoli o figliuole; quella moglie, e i figliuoli di essa, sieno del signore; e vadasene egli col suo corpo.	4 If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the wife and her children wilbelong to her master, and he wil depart alone.
5 Ma se pure il servo dice: Io amo il mio signore, la mia moglie, e i miei figliuoli; io non me ne voglio andar franco;	5 But if the slave says, "I love my master and my wife and children; I do not wish to be freed,"
6 faccialo il suo signore comparire davanti a’ giudici; poi faccialo appressare all’uscio, o allo stipite della porta, e forigli l’orecchio con una lesina; e servagli colui in perpetuo.	6 then his master wil bring him before God and then, leading him to the door or the doorpost, his masterwil pierce his ear with an awl, and the slave wil be permanently his.
7 E quando alcuno avrà venduta la sua figliuola per serva, non esca ella di casa, come i servi ne escono.	7 If a man sel s his daughter as a slave, she wil not leave as male slaves do.
8 Se ella dispiace al suo signore, a cui il padre l’avrà sposata, facciala quello franca; non abbia podestà di venderla a un popolo straniero, dopo averle rotta la fede.	8 If she does not please her master who intended her for himself, he must let her be bought back: hehas not the right to sell her to foreigners, for this would be a breach of faith with her.
9 E se egli la fa sposare al suo figliuolo, facciale secondo la ragion delle fanciulle.	9 If he intends her for his son, he must treat her as custom requires daughters to be treated.
10 Se egli gliene prende un’altra, non tolgale il nutrimento, nè il vestire, nè la coabitazione.	10 If he takes another wife, he must not reduce the food, clothing or conjugal rights of the first one.
11 E se egli non le fa queste tre cose, vadasene ella gratuitamente, senza pagar danari alcuni	11 Should he deprive her of these three things she wil leave a free woman, without payingcompensation.
12 Chi avrà percosso un uomo, sì che egli ne muoia, del tutto sia fatto morire.	12 'Anyone who by violence causes a death must be put to death.
13 Ma, quant’è a colui che non l’avrà appostato, anzi Iddio glielo avrà fatto scontrar nelle mani, io ti costituirò un luogo, al quale colui rifugga.	13 If, however, he has not planned to do it but it comes from God by his hand, he can take refuge in aplace which I shal appoint for you.
14 Ma, quando alcuno per temerità avrà macchinato contro al suo prossimo, per ucciderlo con inganno, trallo fuori, eziandio d’appresso al mio altare, perchè muoia.	14 But should any person dare to kill another with deliberate planning, you wil take that person evenfrom my altar to be put to death.
15 Chi avrà battuto suo padre, o sua madre, del tutto sia fatto morire.	15 'Anyone who strikes father or mother wil be put to death.
16 Parimente, chi avrà rubata una persona, o sia che l’abbia venduta, o che gli sia trovata in mano, del tutto sia fatto morire.	16 Anyone who abducts a person -- whether that person has since been sold or is stil held -- wil be putto death.
17 Ed anche, chi avrà maledetto suo padre, o sua madre, del tutto sia fatto morire.	17 Anyone who curses father or mother will be put to death.
18 E quando alcuni contenderanno insieme, e l’uno avrà percosso l’altro con pietra, o col pugno, onde egli non muoia, ma giaccia in letto;	18 'If people quarrel and one strikes the other a blow with stone or fist so that the injured party, thoughnot dead, is confined to bed,
19 se egli si rileva, e cammina fuori in sul suo bastone, colui che l’avrà percosso sia assolto; sol gli paghi ciò ch’egli è stato a bada, e lo faccia medicare fino a compiuta guarigione.	19 but later recovers and can go about, even with a stick, the one who struck the blow wil have noliability, other than to compensate the injured party for the enforced inactivity and to take care of the injured partyuntil the cure is complete.
20 E quando alcuno avrà percosso il suo servo, o la sua serva, con un bastone, sì che gli muoia sotto la mano, facciasene del tutto punizione.	20 'If someone beats his slave, male or female, and the slave dies at his hands, he must pay thepenalty.
21 Ma se pur campa un giorno, o due, non facciasene punizione; perciocchè è suo danaro	21 But should the slave survive for one or two days, he will pay no penalty because the slave is his byright of purchase.
22 E quando alcuni, contendendo insieme, avranno percossa una donna gravida, sì che il parto n’esca fuori, ma pur non vi sarà caso di morte; sia colui che l’avrà percossa condannato ad ammenda, secondo che il marito della donna gl’imporrà; e paghila per autorità de’ giudici.	22 'If people, when brawling, hurt a pregnant woman and she suffers a miscarriage but no further harmis done, the person responsible wil pay compensation as fixed by the woman's master, paying as much as thejudges decide.
23 Ma, se vi è caso di morte, metti vita per vita;	23 If further harm is done, however, you wil award life for life,
24 occhio per occhio, dente per dente, mano per mano, piè per piè;	24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,
25 arsura per arsura, ferita per ferita, lividore per lividore.	25 burn for burn, wound for wound, stroke for stroke.
26 E quando alcuno avrà percosso l’occhio del suo servo, o l’occhio della sua serva, e l’avrà guasto; lascilo andar franco per lo suo occhio.	26 'If anyone strikes the eye of his slave, male or female, and destroys the use of it, he wil give theslave his freedom to compensate for the eye.
27 Parimente, se ha fatto cadere un dente al suo servo o alla sua serva, lascilo andar franco per lo suo dente.	27 If he knocks out the tooth of his slave, male or female, he wil give the slave his freedom tocompensate for the tooth.
28 E quando un bue avrà cozzato un uomo o una donna, sì che ne muoia, del tutto sia quel bue lapidato, e non mangisene la carne; e il padrone del bue sia assolto.	28 'If an ox gores a man or woman to death, the ox wil be stoned and its meat wil not be eaten, but theowner of the ox wil not be liable.
29 Ma se il bue per addietro è stato uso di cozzare, e ciò è stato protestato al padron di esso, ed egli non l’ha guardato, e il bue ha ucciso un uomo o una donna, sia il bue lapidato, e anche facciasi morire il padron di esso.	29 But if the ox has been in the habit of goring before, and if its owner has been warned but has not keptit under control, then should this ox kil a man or woman, it wil be stoned and its owner put to death.
30 Se gli è imposto alcun prezzo di riscatto, paghi il riscatto della sua vita, interamente come gli sarà imposto.	30 If a ransom is imposed on the owner, he wil pay whatever is imposed, to redeem his life.
31 Se il bue cozza un figliuolo o una figliuola, facciaglisi secondo questa legge.	31 If the ox gores a boy or a girl, it will be treated in accordance with this same rule.
32 Se il bue cozza un servo o una serva, paghi il padron del bue trenta sicli di argento al padrone di esso, e sia lapidato il bue.	32 If the ox gores a slave, male or female, its owner will pay the price -- thirty shekels -- to their master,and the ox will be stoned.
33 E, se alcuno scuopre una fossa; ovvero, avendo cavata una fossa, non la ricuopre, e vi cade dentro bue od asino;	33 'If anyone leaves a pit uncovered, or digs a pit and does not cover it, and an ox, or donkey fal s into it,
34 ristorine il danno il padron della fossa, pagandone i danari al padron del bue o dell’asino; e il morto sia suo.	34 then the owner of the pit will make good the loss by compensating its owner, and the dead animal willbe his.
35 E se il bue d’alcuno urta il bue del prossimo di esso, dì che muoia, vendano essi il bue vivo, e partiscanne i danari per metà; partiscano eziandio il morto.	35 If anyone's ox injures anyone else's ox causing its death, the owners wil sel and share the moneyfor it; they will also share the dead animal.
36 Ma, se è notorio che quel bue per addietro fosse uso di cozzare, e il padrone di esso non l’ha guardato, restituisca egli del tutto bue per bue; ma il morto sia suo	36 But if it is common knowledge that the ox has been in the habit of goring before, and its owner hasnot kept it under control, the owner wil repay ox for ox, and wil keep the dead animal.
	37 'If anyone steals an ox or a sheep and slaughters or sel s it, he wil pay back five beasts from theherd for the ox, and four animals from the flock for the sheep.'
