1 En ce temps-là, il n’y avait pas de roi en Israël. Un Lévite qui résidait à l’extrémité de la montagne d’Éphraïm, prit comme concubine une femme de Bethléem en Juda.	1 At that time, when there was no king in Israel, there was a Levite residing in remote parts of the mountain region of Ephraim who had taken for himself a concubine from Bethlehem of Judah.
2 Sa concubine lui fut infidèle et le quitta pour retourner dans la maison de son père, à Bethléem en Juda, où elle resta environ quatre mois.	2 His concubine was unfaithful to him and left him for her father's house in Bethlehem of Judah, where she stayed for some four months.
3 Son mari se mit en route pour aller la rejoindre, pour parler à son cœur et la ramener avec lui; il avait avec lui son serviteur et deux ânes. Elle le fit entrer dans la maison de son père et, dès que le père de la jeune femme l’aperçut, il vint tout heureux à sa rencontre.	3 Her husband then set out with his servant and a pair of asses, and went after her to forgive her and take her back. She brought him into her father's house, and on seeing him, the girl's father joyfully made him welcome.
4 Son beau-père, père de la jeune femme, le retint et il resta là trois jours avec lui. Ils mangèrent, ils burent et passèrent la nuit en ce lieu.	4 He was detained by the girl's father, and so he spent three days with this father-in-law of his, eating and drinking and passing the night there.
5 Le quatrième jour, ils se levèrent de bonne heure et le Lévite se prépara pour partir. Mais le père de la jeune femme dit à son gendre: “Prends des forces, mange un morceau de pain; ensuite vous partirez.”	5 On the fourth day they rose early in the morning and he prepared to go. But the girl's father said to his son-in-law, "Fortify yourself with a little food; you can go later on."
6 Ils s’assirent donc, ils mangèrent et burent tous les deux. Alors le père de la jeune femme dit à son mari: “Passe encore une nuit, prends un peu de bon temps!”	6 So they stayed and the two men ate and drank together. Then the girl's father said to the husband, "Why not decide to spend the night here and enjoy yourself?"
7 L’homme allait se lever pour partir, mais son beau-père insista tellement qu’il revint et passa encore la nuit en cet endroit.	7 The man still made a move to go, but when his father-in-law pressed him he went back and spent the night there.
8 Le cinquième jour, quand il se leva de bon matin pour se mettre en route, le père de la jeune femme lui dit: “Reprends donc des forces, attends la tombée du jour.” Ils mangèrent tous les deux.	8 On the fifth morning he rose early to depart, but the girl's father said, "Fortify yourself and tarry until the afternoon." When he and his father-in-law had eaten,
9 Comme le mari se levait pour partir avec sa concubine et son serviteur, son beau-père, le père de la jeune femme lui dit: “Regarde! Le jour baisse, le soir ne tardera pas, passez donc ici la nuit. Prends un peu de bon temps; demain vous vous lèverez de bonne heure et vous vous mettrez en route pour rejoindre ta tente.”	9 and the husband was ready to go with his concubine and servant, the girl's father said to him, "It is already growing dusk. Stay for the night. See, the day is coming to an end. Spend the night here and enjoy yourself. Early tomorrow you can start your journey home."
10 Mais le mari ne voulut pas passer une nuit de plus. Il se mit en route avec ses deux ânes chargés et sa concubine en direction de Jébus (c’est Jérusalem).	10 The man, however, refused to stay another night; he and his concubine set out with a pair of saddled asses, and traveled till they came opposite Jebus, which is Jerusalem.
11 Lorsqu’ils furent près de Jébus, le jour avait beaucoup baissé et le serviteur dit à son maître: “Tu devrais quitter la route et entrer dans cette ville des Jébusites, nous y passerons la nuit.”	11 Since they were near Jebus with the day far gone, the servant said to his master, "Come, let us turn off to this city of the Jebusites and spend the night in it."
12 Mais son maître lui répondit: “Nous n’entrerons pas dans une ville étrangère: ces gens-là ne sont pas des Israélites. Allons plutôt jusqu’à Guibéa.”	12 But his master said to him, "We will not turn off to a city of foreigners, who are not Israelites, but will go on to Gibeah.
13 Il ajouta: “Dépêchons-nous d’atteindre l’une de ces villes, Guibéa ou Rama, pour y passer la nuit.”	13 Come," he said to his servant, "let us make for some other place, either Gibeah or Ramah, to spend the night."
14 Ils passèrent donc, continuèrent leur route et arrivèrent près de Guibéa de Benjamin lorsque le soleil se couchait.	14 So they continued on their way till the sun set on them when they were abreast of Gibeah of Benjamin.
15 Quittant la route, ils entrèrent dans Guibéa pour y passer la nuit. Le Lévite alla s’asseoir sur la place, mais personne ne les invita à passer la nuit dans sa maison.	15 There they turned off to enter Gibeah for the night. The man waited in the public square of the city he had entered, but no one offered them the shelter of his home for the night.
16 Un homme âgé rentrait en fin de journée de son travail aux champs. Cet homme était de la montagne d’Éphraïm, il résidait à Guibéa où les habitants étaient de la tribu de Benjamin.	16 In the evening, however, an old man came from his work in the field; he was from the mountain region of Ephraim, though he lived among the Benjaminite townspeople of Gibeah.
17 Levant les yeux, il aperçut l’homme de passage assis sur la place de la ville. Le vieillard dit au Lévite: “Où vas-tu et d’où viens-tu?”	17 When he noticed the traveler in the public square of the city, the old man asked where he was going, and whence he had come.
18 Il répondit: “Nous venons de Bethléem en Juda et nous allons vers les confins de la montagne d’Éphraïm, car je suis de là-bas. J’étais allé jusqu’à Bethléem en Juda et je retourne chez moi, mais personne ne m’a reçu dans sa maison.	18 He said to him, "We are traveling from Bethlehem of Judah far up into the mountain region of Ephraim, where I belong. I have been to Bethlehem of Judah and am now going back home; but no one has offered us the shelter of his house.
19 J’ai pourtant de la paille et du fourrage pour nos ânes, du pain et du vin pour moi, pour ma femme et pour mon serviteur. Nous n’avons besoin de rien.”	19 We have straw and fodder for our asses, and bread and wine for the woman and myself and for our servant; there is nothing else we need."
20 L’homme âgé lui dit alors: “Ne t’inquiète pas, je te donnerai ce dont tu as besoin, mais ne passe pas la nuit sur la place.”	20 "You are welcome," the old man said to him, "but let me provide for all your needs, and do not spend the night in the public square."
21 Il le fit entrer dans sa maison et donna du fourrage aux ânes pendant que les voyageurs se lavaient les pieds. Ils mangèrent et burent.	21 So he led them to his house and provided fodder for the asses. Then they washed their feet, and ate and drank.
22 Tout semblait aller bien lorsque les hommes de la ville, de vrais voyous, entourèrent la maison et frappèrent à la porte. Ils dirent au vieillard, au maître de maison: “Fais sortir cet homme qui est venu chez toi, pour que nous abusions de lui.”	22 While they were enjoying themselves, the men of the city, who were corrupt, surrounded the house and beat on the door. They said to the old man whose house it was, "Bring out your guest, that we may abuse him."
23 Le maître de maison sortit pour leur parler; il leur dit: “Non, mes frères, je vous en prie! Ne faites pas de mal. Vous voyez que cet homme est maintenant sous mon toit, ne commettez pas une chose pareille.	23 The owner of the house went out to them and said, "No, my brothers; do not be so wicked. Since this man is my guest, do not commit this crime.
24 J’ai une fille qui est encore vierge, et il y a aussi sa concubine. Je vous les amènerai dehors, vous pourrez les violer et les traiter comme bon vous semblera, mais ne commettez pas une chose aussi ignoble envers cet homme.”	24 Rather let me bring out my maiden daughter or his concubine. Ravish them, or do whatever you want with them; but against the man you must not commit this wanton crime."
25 Les autres refusèrent de l’écouter. Alors le Lévite prit sa concubine et la leur amena dehors. Ils la violèrent et abusèrent d’elle toute la nuit jusqu’au petit matin; à l’aube ils la laissèrent aller.	25 When the men would not listen to his host, the husband seized his concubine and thrust her outside to them. They had relations with her and abused her all night until the following dawn, when they let her go.
26 La femme revint au petit matin et s’écroula devant la porte de la maison où logeait son mari. Elle resta là jusqu’au lever du jour.	26 Then at daybreak the woman came and collapsed at the entrance of the house in which her husband was a guest, where she lay until the morning.
27 Alors son mari se leva, ouvrit la porte de la maison et sortit pour reprendre sa route. Sa concubine était étendue devant la porte de la maison, les mains sur le seuil.	27 When her husband rose that day and opened the door of the house to start out again on his journey, there lay the woman, his concubine, at the entrance of the house with her hands on the threshold.
28 Il lui dit: “Lève-toi et partons.” Mais il n’y eut pas de réponse. L’homme alors la chargea sur son âne et se mit en route pour retourner chez lui.	28 He said to her, "Come, let us go"; but there was no answer. So the man placed her on an ass and started out again for home.
29 Rentré chez lui, il prit un couteau, saisit le corps de sa concubine et la découpa, os par os, en douze morceaux qu’il envoya à travers tout le territoire d’Israël. Il avait donné cet ordre aux hommes qu’il envoyait: “Vous demanderez partout en Israël: A-t-on jamais vu cela depuis que les Israélites sont montés du pays d’Égypte jusqu’à ce jour? Réfléchissez, tenez conseil et donnez votre avis.”	29 On reaching home, he took a knife to the body of his concubine, cut her into twelve pieces, and sent them throughout the territory of Israel.
30 Tous ceux qui voyaient cela disaient: “On n’a jamais vu une chose pareille depuis que les fils d’Israël sont montés du pays d’Égypte jusqu’à ce jour.”	30 Everyone who saw this said, "Nothing like this has been done or seen from the day the Israelites came up from the land of Egypt to this day. Take note of it, and state what you propose to do."
