1 Yahvé dit à Moïse:	1 The LORD said to Moses,
2 “Envoie des hommes en avant pour qu’ils explorent ce pays de Canaan que je donne aux Israélites. Chaque tribu enverra en son nom l’un de ses chefs.”	2 "Send men to reconnoiter the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. You shall send one man from each ancestral tribe, all of them princes."
3 Moïse les envoya donc depuis le désert de Paran sur l’ordre de Yahvé. Tous ces hommes étaient chefs en Israël.	3 So Moses dispatched them from the desert of Paran, as the LORD had ordered. All of them were leaders among the Israelites;
4 Voici leurs noms, Pour la tribu de Ruben, Chammoua, fils de Zakour;	4 by name they were: Shammua, son of Zaccur, of the tribe of Reuben;
5 pour la tribu de Siméon, Chafat, fils de Hori;	5 Shaphat, son of Hori, of the tribe of Simeon;
6 pour la tribu de Juda, Caleb, fils de Yéfouné;	6 Caleb, son of Jephunneh, of the tribe of Judah;
7 pour la tribu d’Issacar, Yiguéal, fils de Yosef;	7 Igal (son of Joseph), of the tribe of Issachar;
8 pour la tribu d’Éphraïm, Hochéa, fils de Noun;	8 Hoshea, son of Nun, of the tribe of Ephraim;
9 pour la tribu de Benjamin, Palti, fils de Rafou;	9 Palti, son of Raphu, of the tribe of Benjamin;
10 pour la tribu de Zabulon, Gadiel, fils de Sodi;	10 Gaddiel, son of Sodi, of the tribe of Zebulun;
11 pour la tribu de Joseph, pour la tribu de Manassé, Gadi, fils de Sousi;	11 Gaddi, son of Susi, of the tribe of Manasseh, for the Josephites, with
12 pour la tribu de Dan, Ammiel, fils de Gémali;	12 Ammiel, son of Gemalli, of the tribe of Dan;
13 pour la tribu d’Asher, Sétour, fils de Mikaël;	13 Sethur, son of Michael, of the tribe of Asher;
14 pour la tribu de Nephtali, Nahbi, fils de Vafsi;	14 Nahbi, son of Vophsi, of the tribe of Naphtali;
15 pour la tribu de Gad, Géouel, fils de Maki.	15 Geuel, son of Machi, of the tribe of Gad.
16 Ce sont là les noms des hommes que Moïse envoya pour explorer le pays de Canaan (à Hochéa, Moïse donna le nom de Josué).	16 These are the names of the men whom Moses sent out to reconnoiter the land. But Hoshea, son of Nun, Moses called Joshua.
17 Moïse les envoya donc pour explorer le pays de Canaan. Il leur dit: “Montez par le Négueb, puis passez à la montagne.	17 In sending them to reconnoiter the land of Canaan, Moses said to them, "Go up here in the Negeb, up into the highlands,
18 Regardez bien comment est le pays et quelle est la population qui l’habite: si elle est forte ou faible, peu nombreuse ou importante.	18 and see what kind of land it is. Are the people living there strong or weak, few or many?
19 Regardez comment est ce pays où ils vivent; s’il est bon ou mauvais. Comment sont les villes où ils habitent: s’agit-il de camps ou de villes fortifiées?	19 Is the country in which they live good or bad? Are the towns in which they dwell open or fortified?
20 Regardez comment est la terre, si elle est riche ou pauvre, s’il y a des arbres ou non. Et vous n’aurez pas peur de nous rapporter des fruits de la terre.” Car c’était la saison des premiers raisins.	20 Is the soil fertile or barren, wooded or clear? And do your best to get some of the fruit of the land." It was then the season for early grapes.
21 Ils partirent donc pour explorer le pays, depuis le désert de Tsin jusqu’à Réhob, vers l’Entrée-de-Hamat.	21 So they went up and reconnoitered the land from the desert of Zin as far as where Rehob adjoins Labo of Hamath.
22 Ils montèrent par le Négueb et arrivèrent à Hébron, où se trouvaient Ahiman, Chéchaï et Talmaï, de la race des Anakim. Hébron avait été fondée sept ans avant la ville de Tanis, en Égypte.	22 Going up by way of the Negeb, they reached Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, descendants of the Anakim, were living. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)
23 Ils parvinrent donc au val d’Echkol, où ils coupèrent un sarment et une grappe de raisin qu’ils emportèrent à deux sur une perche, avec des grenades et des figues.	23 They also reached the Wadi Eshcol, where they cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes on it, which two of them carried on a pole, as well as some pomegranates and figs.
24 On appela ce lieu le vallon d’Echkol, à cause de la grappe que les Israélites y avaient cueillie.	24 It was because of the cluster the Israelites cut there that they called the place Wadi Eshcol.
25 Au bout de quarante jours, ils revinrent de leur inspection dans ce pays.	25 After reconnoitering the land for forty days they returned,
26 Dès leur retour, ils se présentèrent à Moïse, à Aaron et à toute la communauté des Israélites, à Qadesh, dans le désert de Paran. Ils firent leur compte-rendu devant toute la communauté et lui montrèrent les fruits du pays.	26 met Moses and Aaron and the whole community of the Israelites in the desert of Paran at Kadesh, made a report to them all, and showed them the fruit of the country.
27 Voici ce qu’ils racontèrent: “Nous sommes entrés au pays où tu nous avais envoyés. C’est véritablement un pays où ruissellent le lait et le miel: en voici les fruits!	27 They told Moses: "We went into the land to which you sent us. It does indeed flow with milk and honey, and here is its fruit.
28 Mais le peuple qui habite ce pays est très fort. Les villes sont très grandes et fortifiées, nous y avons même vu des descendants d’Anak.	28 However, the people who are living in the land are fierce, and the towns are fortified and very strong. Besides, we saw descendants of the Anakim there.
29 Amalec habite le Négueb; le Hittite, le Jébusite et l’Amorite habitent la montagne; le Cananéen est installé près de la mer et sur les rives du Jourdain.”	29 Amalekites live in the region of the Negeb; Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites dwell in the highlands, and Canaanites along the seacoast and the banks of the Jordan."
30 Caleb calma le peuple qui s’en prenait à Moïse. “Montons, dit-il, et conquérons le pays, car nous en sommes bien capables.”	30 Caleb, however, to quiet the people toward Moses, said, "We ought to go up and seize the land, for we can certainly do so."
31 Mais les hommes qui étaient montés avec lui répliquèrent: “Nous ne pouvons attaquer ce peuple, car il est trop fort pour nous.”	31 But the men who had gone up with him said, "We cannot attack these people; they are too strong for us."
32 Et ils se mirent à décrier le pays qu’ils avaient visité. Ils dirent aux Israélites: “Le pays que nous avons exploré, est un pays qui dévore ses habitants. Les hommes qui l’habitent sont de très grande taille.	32 So they spread discouraging reports among the Israelites about the land they had scouted, saying, "The land that we explored is a country that consumes its inhabitants. And all the people we saw there are huge men,
33 Et nous y avons même vu des géants. À côté d’eux nous avions l’impression d’être des sauterelles et c’est ainsi qu’ils nous voyaient.”	33 veritable giants (the Anakim were a race of giants); we felt like mere grasshoppers, and so we must have seemed to them."
