1 Le roi Sédécias fils de Josias devint roi à la place de Konias, fils de Joïaqim. En effet, Nabukodonozor roi de Babylone l’avait fait roi du pays de Juda.	1 Coniah, son of Jehoiakim, was succeeded by King Zedekiah, son of Josiah; he was made king over the land of Judah by Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon.
2 Mais ni lui, ni ses serviteurs, ni les propriétaires, n’écoutèrent les paroles que Yahvé disait par la bouche du prophète Jérémie.	2 Neither he, nor his ministers, nor the people of the land would listen to the words of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah the prophet.
3 Le roi Sédécias envoya Youkal fils de Chélémyas, et le prêtre Séfanyas fils d’Amassé, avec ce message pour le prophète Jérémie: “Supplie donc Yahvé notre Dieu pour nous.”	3 Yet King Zedekiah sent Jehucal, son of Shelemiah, and Zephaniah, son of Maaseiah the priest, to the prophet Jeremiah with this request: "Pray to the LORD, our God, for us."
4 À ce moment, Jérémie allait et venait librement, on ne l’avait pas encore mis en prison.	4 At this time Jeremiah had not yet been put into prison; he still came and went freely among the people.
5 Or l’armée du Pharaon était sortie d’Égypte et, en apprenant cette nouvelle, les Kaldéens qui assiégeaient Jérusalem s’étaient éloignés de la ville.	5 Also, Pharaoh's army had set out from Egypt, and when the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard this report they marched away from the city.
6 Le prophète Jérémie reçut alors une parole de Yahvé:	6 This word of the LORD then came to the prophet Jeremiah:
7 “Voici ce que dit Yahvé, Dieu d’Israël: Vous répondrez ceci au roi de Juda qui vous envoie vers moi pour me consulter: L’armée du Pharaon est bien sortie pour vous secourir, mais elle est déjà en train de retourner chez elle en Égypte,	7 Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Give this answer to the king of Judah who sent you to me to consult me: Pharaoh's army which has set out to help you will return to its own land, Egypt.
8 et les Kaldéens vont revenir. Ils attaqueront cette ville, ils la prendront et la livreront au feu.	8 The Chaldeans shall return to the fight against this city; they shall capture it and destroy it with fire.
9 Voici ce que dit Yahvé: Vous faites une lourde erreur quand vous affirmez que les Kaldéens sont partis pour de bon. Non, ils ne s’en iront pas!	9 Thus says the LORD: Do not deceive yourselves with the thought that the Chaldeans will leave you for good, because they shall not leave!
10 Et même si vous pouviez écraser l’armée entière des Kaldéens qui combattent contre vous, s’il n’en restait plus que des blessés, ces hommes sortiraient encore de leurs tentes pour livrer cette ville au feu.”	10 Even if you were to defeat the whole Chaldean army now attacking you, and only the wounded remained, each in his tent, these would rise up and destroy the city with fire.
11 L’armée des Kaldéens s’était éloignée de Jérusalem en apprenant l’avancée de l’armée du Pharaon.	11 When the Chaldean army lifted the siege of Jerusalem at the threat of the army of Pharaoh,
12 Jérémie sortit alors de Jérusalem pour se rendre au pays de Benjamin afin d’y partager un héritage avec les siens.	12 Jeremiah set out from Jerusalem for the district of Benjamin, to take part with his family in the division of an inheritance.
13 Arrivé à la porte de Benjamin, il tomba sur un chef des gardes du nom de Yiréyaï, fils de Chélémyas fils de Hananyas. Celui-ci arrêta le prophète Jérémie en lui disant: “Tu cherches à passer aux Kaldéens!”	13 But when he reached the Gate of Benjamin, he met the captain of the guard, a man named Irijah, son of Shelemiah, son of Hananiah; he seized the prophet Jeremiah, saying, "You are deserting to the Chaldeans!"
14 Jérémie répondit: “Ce n’est pas vrai, je ne vais pas passer aux Kaldéens.” Mais celui-ci refusa de l’écouter. Yiréyaï arrêta donc Jérémie et le conduisit aux chefs.	14 "That is a lie!" Jeremiah answered, "I am not deserting to the Chaldeans." Without listening, Irijah kept Jeremiah in custody and brought him to the princes.
15 Les chefs se mirent en colère contre Jérémie et le frappèrent, puis ils l’enfermèrent dans la maison du scribe Yonathan, qu’on avait transformée en prison.	15 The princes were enraged, and had Jeremiah beaten and thrown into prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe, which they were using as a jail.
16 Jérémie fut enfermé dans un cachot voûté et il resta là de nombreux jours.	16 And so Jeremiah entered the vaulted dungeon, where he remained a long time.
17 De là, le roi Sédécias l’envoya chercher pour l’interroger en cachette dans son palais. Il lui dit: “Y a-t-il une parole de Yahvé?” Jérémie lui répondit: “Il y en a une” et il ajouta: “Tu seras livré aux mains du roi de Babylone.”	17 Once King Zedekiah had him brought to his palace and he asked him secretly whether there was any message from the LORD. Yes! Jeremiah answered: you shall be handed over to the king of Babylon.
18 Jérémie dit encore au roi Sédécias: “Quel mal ai-je commis contre toi, contre tes officiers et contre ce peuple, pour que tu m’aies mis en prison?	18 Jeremiah then asked King Zedekiah: In what have I wronged you, or your ministers, or this people, that you should put me in prison?
19 Où sont donc vos prophètes qui vous ont annoncé que le roi de Babylone ne viendrait pas contre vous et contre ce pays?	19 And where are your own prophets now,
20 À présent, monseigneur le roi, écoute, ne repousse pas ma demande: ne me fais pas retourner dans la maison du scribe Yonathan, car je vais y mourir.”	20 who prophesied to you that the king of Babylon would not attack you or this land? Hear now, my lord king, and grant my petition: do not send me back into the house of Jonathan the scribe, or I shall die there.
21 Le roi Sédécias donna donc l’ordre de transférer Jérémie à la cour de garde et de lui donner chaque jour une boule de pain venant de la rue des boulangers, jusqu’au jour où il n’y aurait plus de pain dans la ville. Jérémie resta donc dans la cour de garde.	21 King Zedekiah ordered that Jeremiah be confined in the quarters of the guard, and given a loaf of bread each day from the bakers' shop until all the bread in the city was eaten up. Thus Jeremiah remained in the quarters of the guard.
