1 Si un voleur surpris la nuit en train de percer le mur est frappé à mort, son sang ne sera pas vengé.	1 "(If a thief is caught in the act of housebreaking and beaten to death, there is no bloodguilt involved.
2 Mais si le soleil était déjà levé, son sang sera vengé. Celui qui a volé devra rembourser, et s’il n’a pas de quoi payer, il sera vendu en échange de ce qu’il a volé.	2 But if after sunrise he is thus beaten, there is bloodguilt.) He must make full restitution. If he has nothing, he shall be sold to pay for his theft.
3 Si l’on retrouve chez lui ce qu’il a volé, que ce soit un bœuf, un âne ou un agneau, il rendra le double.	3 If what he stole is found alive in his possession, be it an ox, an ass or a sheep, he shall restore two animals for each one stolen.
4 Si un homme laisse ses bêtes brouter dans son champ ou dans sa vigne et qu’elles broutent dans le champ d’un autre, il devra le dédommager selon ce que rapportait ce champ ou cette vigne.	4 "When a man is burning over a field or a vineyard, if he lets the fire spread so that it burns in another's field, he must make restitution with the best produce of his own field or vineyard.
5 Si un feu éclate, gagne les broussailles, et qu’une meule ou des épis ou un champ soient brûlés, celui qui a allumé l’incendie devra dédommager.	5 If the fire spreads further, and catches on to thorn bushes, so that shocked grain or standing grain or the field itself is burned up, the one who started the fire must make full restitution.
6 Si un homme donne à son prochain de l’argent ou des objets à garder dans sa maison, et qu’un vol y soit commis, le voleur, s’il est trouvé, rendra le double.	6 "When a man gives money or an article to another for safekeeping and it is stolen from the latter's house, the thief, if caught, must make twofold restitution.
7 Mais si le voleur n’est pas retrouvé, le maître de la maison s’approchera de Dieu et jurera que ce n’est pas lui qui a volé le bien de son prochain.	7 If the thief is not caught, the owner of the house shall be brought to God, to swear that he himself did not lay hands on his neighbor's property.
8 Quelle que soit la chose volée, que ce soit un bœuf, un âne, un agneau, un vêtement ou toute autre chose, l’affaire sera portée devant Dieu et celui qui aura été condamné par Dieu rendra le double à son prochain.	8 In every question of dishonest appropriation, whether it be about an ox, or an ass, or a sheep, or a garment, or anything else that has disappeared, where another claims that the thing is his, both parties shall present their case before God; the one whom God convicts must make twofold restitution to the other.
9 Si un homme a donné en garde à son prochain un âne, ou un bœuf, ou une brebis, ou toute autre bête, et que l’animal est mort, ou a été blessé ou volé sans témoin,	9 "When a man gives an ass, or an ox, or a sheep, or any other animal to another for safekeeping, if it dies, or is maimed or snatched away, without anyone witnessing the fact,
10 l’affaire sera réglée par un serment devant Yahvé. Celui qui gardait l’animal jurera qu’il n’a pas volé le bien de son prochain et le maître de l’animal se contentera du serment: l’autre n’aura pas à payer.	10 the custodian shall swear by the LORD that he did not lay hands on his neighbor's property; the owner must accept the oath, and no restitution is to be made.
11 Mais si l’animal est trouvé en sa possession, il en donnera le prix à son maître.	11 But if the custodian is really guilty of theft, he must make restitution to the owner.
12 Si l’animal a été déchiré par des fauves, il en donnera les preuves et n’aura pas à payer pour l’animal mis en pièces.	12 If it has been killed by a wild beast, let him bring it as evidence, and he need not make restitution for the mangled animal.
13 Si quelqu’un a emprunté à son prochain un animal, et que cet animal soit blessé ou meure en l’absence de son maître, celui qui l’a emprunté devra en payer le prix.	13 "When a man borrows an animal from his neighbor, if it is maimed or dies while the owner is not present, the man must make restitution.
14 Mais si le propriétaire de l’animal était sur place, il n’aura rien à payer, l’autre se contentera de la location de la bête.	14 But if the owner is present, he need not make restitution. If it was hired, this was covered by the price of its hire.
15 Si un homme tombe amoureux d’une vierge qui n’est pas encore fiancée et couche avec elle, il en paiera le prix et elle sera sa femme.	15 "When a man seduces a virgin who is not betrothed, and lies with her, he shall pay her marriage price and marry her.
16 Mais si son père refuse de la donner en mariage, l’autre versera en argent l’équivalent d’une dot.	16 If her father refuses to give her to him, he must still pay him the customary marriage price for virgins.
17 Tu ne laisseras pas vivre une sorcière.	17 "You shall not let a sorceress live.
18 Celui qui couche avec une bête sera mis à mort.	18 "Anyone who lies with an animal shall be put to death.
19 Celui qui offre des sacrifices en l’honneur de dieux autres que Yahvé, sera mis à mort.	19 "Whoever sacrifices to any god, except to the LORD alone, shall be doomed.
20 Vous ne maltraiterez pas l’étranger et vous ne l’opprimerez pas, car vous avez été des étrangers en Égypte.	20 "You shall not molest or oppress an alien, for you were once aliens yourselves in the land of Egypt.
21 Vous ne maltraiterez pas la veuve ni l’orphelin.	21 You shall not wrong any widow or orphan.
22 Si vous les maltraitez et qu’ils crient vers moi, j’entendrai leur cri.	22 If ever you wrong them and they cry out to me, I will surely hear their cry.
23 Alors ma colère s’enflammera contre vous: je vous ferai périr par l’épée, vos femmes resteront veuves, et vos fils orphelins.	23 My wrath will flare up, and I will kill you with the sword; then your own wives will be widows, and your children orphans.
24 Si tu prêtes de l’argent à quelqu’un de ton peuple, à un pauvre qui vit au milieu de vous, tu ne te conduiras pas envers lui comme un créancier, tu ne lui imposeras pas d’intérêts.	24 "If you lend money to one of your poor neighbors among my people, you shall not act like an extortioner toward him by demanding interest from him.
25 Si tu as pris en gage le manteau de ton prochain, tu le lui rendras au coucher du soleil,	25 If you take your neighbor's cloak as a pledge, you shall return it to him before sunset;
26 car il n’a pas d’autre couverture, rien d’autre que ce manteau pour se couvrir: et comment dormira-t-il? Si jamais il crie vers moi, je l’entendrai, car moi j’ai pitié.	26 for this cloak of his is the only covering he has for his body. What else has he to sleep in? If he cries out to me, I will hear him; for I am compassionate.
27 Tu ne blasphèmeras pas le Nom de Dieu et tu ne maudiras pas le chef de ton peuple.	27 "You shall not revile God, nor curse a prince of your people.
28 Tu m’offriras sans tarder la sève de ton champ et le jus de ton pressoir; tu me donneras le premier-né de tes fils.	28 "You shall not delay the offering of your harvest and your press. You shall give me the first-born of your sons.
29 Tu feras de même pour ton bœuf et pour ton petit bétail: durant sept jours ils resteront avec la mère, et le huitième jour tu me les offriras.	29 You must do the same with your oxen and your sheep; for seven days the firstling may stay with its mother, but on the eighth day you must give it to me.
30 Vous serez pour moi un peuple saint. Vous ne mangerez pas la viande d’une bête mise en pièces dans les champs, mais vous la donnerez aux chiens.	30 "You shall be men sacred to me. Flesh torn to pieces in the field you shall not eat; throw it to the dogs.
