1 Roboam se rendit à Sichem, car c’est à Sichem que tout Israël était venu pour le faire roi.	1 Now Rehoboam set out for Shechem. For in that place all of Israel had convened, so that they might appoint him as king.
2 Lorsque Jéroboam fils de Nabat l’apprit, il rentra d’Égypte où il avait fui pour échapper au roi Salomon.	2 But when Jeroboam, the son of Nabat, who was in Egypt, (indeed he had fled to that place from Solomon) had heard it, he promptly returned.
3 On l’avait envoyé chercher, et Jéroboam arriva en même temps que tout Israël. Ils dirent ceci à Roboam:	3 And they summoned him, and he arrived with all of Israel. And they spoke to Rehoboam, saying:
4 “Ton père nous a imposé un joug pesant. Si tu allèges ces travaux forcés, ce joug pesant que ton père nous a fait porter, nous te servirons.”	4 “Your father pressed upon us a very difficult yoke. You should govern us more lightly than your father, who imposed on us a heavy servitude, and so lift up some of the burden, so that we may serve you.”
5 Il leur répondit: “Attendez trois jours, puis revenez me voir.” Et le peuple s’en alla.	5 But he said, “Return to me after three days.” And when the people had gone away,
6 Le roi Roboam consulta les anciens qui avaient été les conseillers de son père Salomon quand il vivait. Il leur dit: “Que me conseillez-vous de répondre à ce peuple?”	6 he took counsel with the elders, who had stood before his father Solomon while he was still living, saying, “What counsel would you give to me, so that I may respond to the people?”
7 Ils lui répondirent: “Si aujourd’hui tu te fais leur serviteur, si tu te montres conciliant dans ta réponse, ils seront pour toujours à ton service.”	7 And they said to him, “If you please this people, and if you soothe them with words of clemency, they will be your servants for all days.”
8 Mais Roboam n’écouta pas le conseil que les anciens lui avaient donné et il se tourna vers les jeunes gens qui avaient grandi avec lui et qui se tenaient près de lui.	8 But he set aside the counsel of the elders, and he began to have discussion with the youth, who had been raised with him and who were among his companions.
9 Il leur demanda: “Que me conseillez-vous de répondre à ce peuple? Vous savez qu’ils me disent: rends moins pénible le joug que ton père nous a fait porter.”	9 And he said to them: “How does it seem to you? Or how should I respond to this people, who have said to me, ‘Lift up the yoke that your father imposed upon us?’ ”
10 Les jeunes gens lui dirent: “Tu dois répondre au peuple qui te dit: Ton père nous a fait porter un joug pesant, allège notre fardeau. Tu leur diras ceci: Mon petit doigt est plus gros que les reins de mon père.	10 But they responded like youths, having been raised with him in luxury, and they said: “So shall you speak to the people, who said to you, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy; you should lighten it,’ and so shall you respond to them: ‘My little finger is thicker than the back of my father.
11 Mon père vous a fait porter un joug pesant? Avec moi ce sera pire. Mon père vous a corrigés avec des lanières de cuir? Avec moi, les fouets auront des pointes de fer.”	11 My father imposed a heavy yoke upon you, and I will place more weight upon it. My father cut you with whips; truly, I will beat you with scorpions.’ ”
12 Jéroboam et tout le peuple revinrent le troisième jour auprès de Roboam, puisque le roi leur avait dit: Dans trois jours vous reviendrez.	12 Then Jeroboam, and the entire people, went to Rehoboam on the third day, just as he had instructed them.
13 Le roi leur parla sèchement, il ne tint pas compte du conseil des anciens.	13 And the king responded harshly, abandoning the counsel of the elders.
14 Roboam suivit le conseil des jeunes gens et leur dit: “Si mon père a rendu votre joug pesant, avec moi ce sera pire. Si mon père vous a corrigés avec des lanières de cuir, avec moi les fouets auront des pointes de fer.”	14 And he spoke according to the will of the youths: “My father imposed a heavy yoke upon you, which I will make heavier. My father cut you with whips; truly, I will beat you with scorpions.”
15 Le roi n’avait donc pas écouté le peuple: c’était une intervention de Dieu pour que Yahvé réalise la parole qu’il avait dite à Jéroboam fils de Nabat par la bouche d’Ahiya de Silo.	15 And he did not acquiesce to the pleadings of the people. For it was the will of God that his word be fulfilled, which he had spoken by the hand of Ahijah, the Shilonite, to Jeroboam, the son of Nabat.
16 Lorsque tout Israël vit que le roi ne l’écoutait pas, le peuple répliqua au roi: “Quelle part avons-nous avec David? Nous n’avons rien à hériter du fils de Jessé. Allez, Israël! À tes tentes! Et maintenant David, assure toi-même la nourriture de ta maison!” Et tout Israël regagna ses foyers.	16 Then the entire people, speaking more harshly to the king, spoke to him in this way: “There is no portion for us in David, and there is no inheritance in the son of Jesse. Return to your dwellings, O Israel. Then you, O David, shall pasture your own house.” And Israel went away to their dwellings.
17 Cependant Roboam régna sur les Israélites qui habitaient les villes de Juda.	17 But Rehoboam reigned over the sons of Israel who were living in the cities of Judah.
18 Le roi Roboam envoya Adoram, le chef de la corvée, mais les Israélites le reçurent à coups de pierres et il mourut. Le roi Roboam fut obligé de monter sur son char pour s’enfuir à Jérusalem.	18 And king Rehoboam sent Aduram, who was in charge of the tributes. And the sons of Israel stoned him, and he died. And so king Rehoboam hurried to climb into the chariot, and he fled to Jerusalem.
19 Et depuis ce jour jusqu’à maintenant, Israël a renié la maison de David.	19 And Israel withdrew from the house of David, even to this day.
