1 Alors le roi se troubla, il monta à la chambre haute de la porte et se mit à pleurer. Tout en marchant il parlait ainsi: “Mon fils Absalom! Mon fils! Mon fils Absalom! Pourquoi ne suis-je pas mort à ta place? Absalom, mon fils! Mon fils!”	1 The king shuddered. He went up to the room over the gate and burst into tears; and, as he wept, hekept saying, 'Oh, my son Absalom! My son! My son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you! Oh, Absalom myson, my son!'
2 On le dit à Joab: “Le roi pleure et se lamente sur Absalom.”	2 Word was brought to Joab, 'The king is weeping and mourning for Absalom.'
3 Ce jour-là la victoire se changea en deuil pour tout le peuple, car tout le peuple apprit que le roi était désespéré à cause de son fils.	3 And for the entire army that day, victory was turned to mourning, the troops having learnt that the kingwas grieving for his son.
4 C’est pourquoi ce jour-là le peuple rentra sans bruit dans la ville, comme des gens qui ont fui pendant la bataille et qui rentrent tout honteux sans se faire remarquer.	4 And that day the troops came furtively back into town, like troops creeping shamefacedly away whendeserting in battle.
5 Le roi, lui, s’était voilé la face et il criait à haute voix: “Mon fils Absalom! Absalom, mon fils! Mon fils!”	5 The king had covered his face and kept crying aloud, 'My son Absalom! Oh, Absalom my son, myson!'
6 Joab entra dans la chambre du roi et lui dit: “Aujourd’hui tu couvres de honte tous tes serviteurs. Ils t’ont sauvé la vie, la vie des tes fils et de tes filles, la vie de tes femmes et de tes concubines.	6 Joab went inside to the king and said, 'Today you have made al your servants feel ashamed-today,when they have saved your life, the lives of your sons and daughters, the lives of your wives and the lives ofyour concubines!-because you love those who hate you and hate those who love you.
7 Mais tu aimes ceux qui te haïssent et tu hais ceux qui t’aiment. Tu le montres bien aujourd’hui: tes serviteurs et leurs chefs ne sont rien pour toi et si aujourd’hui Absalom était en vie, et que tous nous soyons morts, tu serais très content.	7 Today you have made it plain that commanders and soldiers mean nothing to you -- for today I cansee that you would be content if we were all dead, provided that Absalom was alive!
8 Maintenant lève-toi, sors et parle à tes serviteurs! Je le jure par Yahvé, si tu ne sors pas, personne ne restera près de toi cette nuit, et ce serait pour toi un plus grand malheur que tous ceux qui t’ont frappé depuis ta jeunesse jusqu’à aujourd’hui.”	8 Now get up, come out and reassure your soldiers; for if you do not come out, I swear by Yahweh, notone man wil stay with you tonight; and this will be a worse misfortune for you than anything that has happenedto you from your youth until now!'
9 Alors le roi se leva et vint s’asseoir à la porte. On l’annonça à tout le peuple: “Voici, le roi est assis à la porte.” Et tout le peuple se présenta devant le roi. Tous les gens d’Israël s’étaient enfui chez eux,	9 The king got up and took his seat at the gate. An announcement was made to the whole army: 'Theking is sitting at the gate.' And the whole army assembled in front of the king.
10 et dans toutes les tribus d’Israël on discutait. On disait: “C’est le roi qui nous a délivrés de la main de tous nos ennemis, c’est lui qui nous a délivrés des Philistins, et maintenant à cause d’Absalom il a dû s’enfuir du pays.	10 Israel had fled, dispersing to their homes. Throughout the tribes of Israel al was dissension and people began saying, 'The king, having freed us from the clutches of our enemies, having saved us from theclutches of the Philistines, has himself had to flee the country to escape from Absalom;
11 Cet Absalom que nous avions consacré comme roi, il est mort dans la bataille, alors, ne ferez-vous rien pour ramener le roi?”	11 and now Absalom, whom we had anointed to reign over us, has died in battle. Why does no onesuggest that the king should be brought back?'What was being said throughout Israel reached the king.
12 Ce que l’on disait dans tout Israël arriva aux oreilles du roi. Le roi David donna cette mission aux prêtres Sadoq et Ébyatar: “Faites passer ce message aux anciens de Juda: Pourquoi seriez-vous les derniers à faire revenir le roi chez lui?	12 King David then sent word to the priests Zadok and Abiathar, 'Say to the elders of Judah, "Whyshould you be the last to bring the king home?
13 N’êtes-vous pas mes frères? N’êtes-vous pas de ma chair et de mes os? Pourquoi seriez-vous les derniers à faire revenir le roi?	13 You are my brothers, you are my own flesh and bone: why should you be the last to bring the kingback?"
14 Vous direz aussi à Amasa: N’es-tu pas de ma chair et de mes os? Que Dieu me maudisse et me maudisse encore si je ne te fais pas chef de l’armée à la place de Joab.”	14 And say to Amasa, "Are you not my own flesh and bone? May God bring unnameable il s on me andworse il s, too, if you do not become my permanent army commander instead of Joab!" '
15 Par ces paroles il gagna la confiance de tous les hommes de Juda, et d’un commun accord ils envoyèrent ce message au roi: “Reviens avec tous tes serviteurs.”	15 Thus he rallied the hearts of the men of Judah to a man and, as a result, they sent word to the king,'Come back, you and al who serve you.'
16 Le roi revint donc. Il atteignait le Jourdain lorsque les gens de Juda arrivèrent à Guilgal, venant à la rencontre du roi pour l’aider à traverser le Jourdain.	16 So the king started home and reached the Jordan. Judah, coming to meet the king to escort himacross the Jordan, had arrived at Gilgal.
17 Chiméï fils de Guéra, le Benjaminite de Bahourim, descendait avec les gens de Juda au-devant du roi David,	17 Shimei son of Gera, the Benjaminite of Bahurim, hurried down with the men of Judah to meet KingDavid.
18 amenant avec lui 1 000 hommes de la tribu de Benjamin. Siba, l’intendant de la maison de Saül, était descendu dans le Jourdain avec ses 15 fils et ses 20 serviteurs au devant du roi David,	18 With him were a thousand men from Benjamin. Ziba, servant of the House of Saul, with his fifteensons and twenty servants, arrived at the Jordan before the king
19 pour faire traverser la famille du roi, et pour toute autre chose qu’il pouvait désirer. Chiméï fils de Guéra se jeta aux pieds du roi au moment où il traversait le Jourdain.	19 and worked manful y ferrying the king's family across and doing whatever he required. While the kingwas crossing the Jordan, Shimei son of Gera fel at the king's feet
20 Il dit au roi: “Que mon seigneur oublie ma faute, ne m’en garde pas rancune. Oublie le mal que ton serviteur a fait à mon seigneur le roi, le jour où il sortait de Jérusalem.	20 and said to the king, 'I hope my lord does not regard me as guilty of a crime! Forget about the wrongyour servant did on the day my lord the king left Jerusalem. Let my lord not hold my guilt against me.
21 Ton serviteur sait bien qu’il a péché, mais aujourd’hui il est venu le premier de toute la maison de Joseph pour descendre à la rencontre de mon seigneur le roi.”	21 For your servant is aware of having sinned, and that is why I have come today -- the first member ofthe whole House of Joseph to come down to meet my lord the king.'
22 Abisaï fils de Sérouya prit la parole et dit: “Chiméï mérite la mort, car il a maudit le roi consacré par Yahvé.”	22 At this, Abishai son of Zeruiah spoke up and said, 'Does Shimei not deserve death for having cursedYahweh's anointed?'
23 Mais David répondit: “Ne vous mêlez pas de mes affaires, fils de Sérouya, vous me feriez du tort aujourd’hui si quelqu’un était mis à mort en Israël. Je sais très bien qu’aujourd’hui je suis roi de tout Israël.”	23 To which David replied, 'What concern is my business to you, sons of Zeruiah, that you shouldoppose my wishes today? Could anyone be put to death in Israel today? Today I know for sure that I am king ofIsrael?'
24 Et le roi fit à Chiméï ce serment: “Tu ne mourras pas.”	24 'Your life is spared,' the king said. And the king gave him his oath.
25 Méribaal, le fils de Saül, était descendu lui aussi à la rencontre du roi. Depuis le jour où le roi était parti, jusqu’à ce jour où il revenait en paix, Méribaal ne s’était pas lavé les pieds ni les mains, il n’avait pas taillé sa moustache ni lavé ses vêtements.	25 Meribbaal son of Saul also went down to meet the king. He had not cared for his feet or hands, hehad not trimmed his moustache or washed his clothes from the day of the king's departure til the day of hispeaceful return.
26 Comme il arrivait de Jérusalem au-devant du roi, le roi lui demanda: “Pourquoi n’es-tu pas venu avec moi Méribaal?”	26 When he arrived from Jerusalem to greet the king, the king asked him, 'Why did you not come withme, Meribbaal?'
27 Il répondit: “Mon seigneur le roi, c’est mon serviteur qui m’a trompé. Je lui avais dit: Selle mon ânesse, je la monterai pour rejoindre le roi, car tu le sais, ton serviteur est infirme.	27 'My lord king,' he replied, 'my retainer deceived me. Your servant said to him, "Saddle the donkey forme to ride, so that I can go with the king," your servant being lame.
28 Et voilà qu’il m’a calomnié auprès de mon seigneur le roi. Mais mon seigneur le roi est comme l’ange de Yahvé, qu’il agisse aujourd’hui comme bon lui semble.	28 He has slandered your servant to my lord the king. My lord the king, however, is like the Angel ofGod, so do as you think right.
29 La famille de mon père ne pouvait rien attendre de mon seigneur le roi sinon la mort, et cependant tu m’as admis parmi ceux qui mangent à ta table. De quel droit pourrais-je encore demander quelque chose au roi?”	29 My father's entire family deserved no better than death from my lord the king, and yet you admittedyour servant to the ranks of those who eat at your table. What right have I to make any further appeal to theking?'
30 Le roi lui dit: “Assez de discours! Toi et Siba, vous partagerez les terres.”	30 The king said, 'You need say no more. I rule that you and Ziba divide the property between you.'
31 Méribaal dit au roi: “Qu’il garde tout, puisque mon seigneur le roi est rentré chez lui en paix.”	31 'Let him take it al ,' Meribbaal said to the king, 'since my lord the king has come back home in peace!'
32 Barzillaï de Galaad était descendu de Roglim, il avait passé le Jourdain avec le roi avant de prendre congé de lui.	32 Barzillai the Gileadite had come down from Rogelim and accompanied the king towards the Jordan,intending to take leave of him at the Jordan.
33 Or Barzillaï était très vieux, il avait 80 ans; c’est lui qui avait ravitaillé le roi alors qu’il était à Mahanayim, car c’était un homme très riche.	33 Barzillai was a man of great age; he was eighty years old. He had kept the king in provisions duringhis stay at Mahanaim, being a very wealthy man.
34 Le roi dit à Barzillaï: “Reste avec moi et je te nourrirai à Jérusalem.”	34 'Come with me', the king said to Barzil ai, 'and I will provide for you at my side in Jerusalem.'
35 Mais Barzillaï dit au roi: “Combien de jours, combien d’années me reste-t-il à vivre pour que je vienne avec le roi à Jérusalem?	35 Barzillai replied to the king, 'How many years have I left to live, for me to go up to Jerusalem with theking?
36 J’ai maintenant 80 ans et je ne distingue plus ce qui est bon et ce qui est mauvais, je n’ai plus le goût de ce que je mange ou de ce que je bois, je n’entends plus la voix des chanteurs et des chanteuses. Pourquoi donc ton serviteur serait-il encore à charge à mon seigneur le roi?	36 I am now eighty years old; can I tel the good from the bad? Has your servant any taste for his foodand drink? Can I stil hear the voices of men and women singers? Why should your servant be a further burdento my lord the king?
37 Ton serviteur t’accompagnera encore un peu au-delà du Jourdain, mais pourquoi le roi me donnerait-il une telle récompense?	37 Your servant will go a little way across the Jordan with the king; but why should the king reward meso generously for that?
38 Permets-moi de retourner et de mourir dans ma ville, près du tombeau de mon père et de ma mère. Mais mon fils Kinham, ton serviteur, continuera avec mon seigneur le roi et tu feras pour lui ce qui te semblera bon.”	38 Please allow your servant to go home again, so that I can die in my own town near the grave of myfather and mother. But here is your servant Chimham; let him go with my lord the king; treat him as you thinkright.'
39 Le roi dit: “Que Kinham reste avec moi. Je ferai pour lui ce que tu voudras, et tout ce que tu me demanderas, je le ferai pour toi.”	39 The king said, 'Let Chimham come along with me then; I shall do whatever you wish for him, andanything you request I shal do for your sake.'
40 Tout le peuple traversa le Jourdain après le roi. Lui embrassa Barzillaï et le bénit, et celui-ci s’en retourna chez lui.	40 The people then al crossed the Jordan, and the king, having crossed, kissed Barzil ai and blessedhim, and the latter went home.
41 Le roi marcha vers Guilgal en compagnie de Kinham; tout le peuple de Juda accompagnait le roi, ainsi que la moitié du peuple d’Israël.	41 The king went on to Gilgal and Chimham went with him. Al the people of Judah accompanied theking, and also half the people of Israel.
42 C’est alors que les hommes d’Israël vinrent auprès du roi et lui dirent: “Pourquoi nos frères, les hommes de Juda, t’ont-ils enlevé avec ta famille pour te faire traverser le Jourdain, alors que tu avais là toute ta garde avec toi?”	42 Al the men of Israel then came to the king. 'Why', they asked the king, 'have our brothers, the men ofJudah, carried you off and brought the king and his family across the Jordan, and al David's men with him?'
43 Les hommes de Juda répondirent aux Israélites: “Le roi n’est-il pas de notre tribu? Pourquoi vous mettre en colère? Est-ce que le roi nous a donné à manger, ou quelque chose d’autre?”	43 Al the men of Judah retorted to the men of Israel, 'Because the king is more closely related to us.Why do you take offence at this? Have we been eating at the king's expense? Have we taken any position forourselves?'
44 Les Israélites répondirent aux hommes de Juda: “Nous avons dix fois plus de droits que vous sur le roi. Pourquoi donc nous avoir méprisés? C’est nous qui avons demandé les premiers le retour de notre roi.” Mais les hommes de Juda leur répondirent durement, plus qu’eux-mêmes ne l’avaient fait.	44 The men of Israel replied to the men of Judah, 'We have ten shares in the king and, what is more, weare your elder brothers, so why have you slighted us? Were we not the first to suggest bringing back our king?'The men of Judah's words were even more intemperate than those of the men of Israel.
