1 La famine s’était aggravée dans le pays;	1 In the mean time the famine was heavy upon all the land.
2 quand on eut fini de manger le blé qu’ils avaient ramené d’Égypte, le père leur dit: “Retournez acheter un peu de nourriture pour nous.”	2 And when they had eaten up all the corn, which they had brought out of Egypt, Jacob said to his sons: Go again and buy us a little food.
3 Mais Juda lui dit: “L’homme nous l’a dit clairement: Il est inutile de vous présenter devant moi sans votre frère!	3 Juda answered: The man declared unto us with the atteststion of an oath, saying: You shall not see my face, unless you bring your youngest brother with you.
4 Si tu envoies notre frère avec nous, nous descendrons et nous t’achèterons de la nourriture.	4 If therefore thou wilt send him with us, we will set out together, and will buy necessaries for thee.
5 Mais si tu ne l’envoies pas, nous ne descendrons pas, car l’homme nous a bien dit: Inutile de vous présenter devant moi sans votre frère!”	5 But if thou wilt not, we will not go: for the man, as we have often said, declared unto us, saying: You shall not see my face without your youngest brother.
6 Alors Israël leur dit: “Pourquoi avez-vous dit à cet homme que vous aviez encore un frère? Vous avez fait mon malheur.”	6 Israel said to them: You have done this for my misery in that you told him you had also another brother.
7 Ils répondirent: “L’homme nous a tellement questionné sur nous, sur notre famille! Il nous a dit: Est-ce que votre père est encore vivant? Avez-vous un frère? Alors nous avons répondu à ses questions et nous l’avons renseigné. Pouvions-nous deviner qu’il nous dirait: Amenez-moi votre frère?”	7 But they answered: The man asked us in order concerning our kindred: if our father lived: if we had a brother: and we answered him regularly, according to what he demanded: Bring hither your brother with you?
8 Juda dit alors à son père Israël: “Envoie le jeune homme avec moi, que nous puissions prendre le départ: c’est une question de vie ou de mort pour toi et pour nos petits enfants.	8 And Juda said to his father: Send the bou with me, that we may set forward, and may live: lest both we and our children perish.
9 Je répondrai pour lui, c’est à moi que tu demanderas compte de lui. Si je ne te le ramène pas, si je ne te le rends pas, je serai coupable à jamais devant toi.	9 I take the boy upon me, require him at my hand: unless I bring him again, and restore him to thee, I will be guilty of sin against thee for ever.
10 Mais si nous n’avions pas tant tardé, nous serions déjà revenus deux fois.”	10 If delay had not been made, we had been here again the second time.
11 Leur père Israël leur dit: “S’il en est ainsi, faites donc ce que je vous dis. Prenez dans vos sacs des produits du pays, et emportez-les pour faire un cadeau à cet homme: un peu de résine pour le brûle-parfum, un peu de miel, de la gomme parfumée, des pistaches et des amandes.	11 Then Israel said to them: If it must needs be so, do what you will: take of the best fruits of the land in your vessels, and carry down presents to the man, a little balm, and honey, and storax, myrrh, turpentine, and almonds.
12 Puis emportez le double d’argent, ainsi vous rendrez l’argent qu’on a remis dans vos sacs: peut-être est-ce une erreur.	12 And take with you double money, and carry back what you found in your sacks, lest perhaps it was done by mistake.
13 Prenez donc votre frère, et allez retrouver cet homme.	13 And take also your brother, and go to the man.
14 Que le Dieu de la Steppe vous accorde de trouver grâce à ses yeux, pour qu’il vous laisse repartir avec votre frère et avec Benjamin. Quant à moi, si je dois être privé de mes enfants, que j’en sois privé!”	14 And may my almighty Bod make him favourable to you; and send back with you your brother, whom he keepeth, and this Benjamin: and as for me I shall be desolate without children.
15 Les hommes chargèrent donc ces cadeaux et prirent le double d’argent, ils emmenèrent aussi Benjamin. Ils descendirent en Égypte et se présentèrent devant Joseph.	15 So the men took the presents, and double money, and Benjamin: and went down into Egypt, and stood before Joseph.
16 Lorsque Joseph vit que Benjamin était avec eux, il dit à son intendant: “Fais entrer ces hommes chez moi, fais tuer une bête et préparer la viande, car ces hommes mangeront avec moi à midi.”	16 And when he had seen them, and Benjamin with them, he commanded the steward of his house, saying: Bring in the men into the house, and kill victims, and prepare a feast: because they shall eat with me at noon.
17 L’intendant fit ce que Joseph avait commandé; il conduisit les hommes dans la maison de Joseph.	17 He did as he was commanded, and brought the men into the house.
18 Quand on les fit entrer dans la maison de Joseph, les hommes eurent peur. Ils se disaient: “C’est à cause de l’argent qu’on a remis dans nos sacs la fois précédente, qu’ils nous font entrer. Ils vont se jeter sur nous tout-à-coup et ils nous prendront comme esclaves avec nos ânes!”	18 And they being much afraid, said there one to another: Because of the money, which we carried back the first time in our sacks, we are brought in: that he may bring upon us a false accusation, and by violence make slaves of us and our asses.
19 Aussi, dès leur arrivée à la maison, ils se dirigèrent vers l’intendant de Joseph. Ils lui dirent:	19 Wherefore going up to the steward of the house, at the door,
20 “De grâce, mon seigneur, nous sommes déjà venus il y a quelque temps pour acheter de la nourriture.	20 They said: Sir, we desire thee to hear us: We came down once before to buy food:
21 Il s’est trouvé qu’à la halte du soir, lorsque nous avons ouvert nos sacs, l’argent de chacun d’entre nous, avec le compte exact, était à l’entrée de son sac. Aussi l’avons-nous rapporté.	21 And when we had bought, and come to the inn, we opened our sacks, and found our money in the mouths of the sacks: which we have now brought again in the same weight.
22 Nous ne savons pas qui avait mis notre argent dans nos sacs, mais nous avons pris une nouvelle somme d’argent pour acheter de la nourriture.”	22 And we have brought other money besides, to buy what we want: we cannot tell who put it in our bags.
23 Il leur répondit: “Soyez en paix, soyez sans crainte: votre Dieu, le Dieu de votre père a mis pour vous un trésor dans vos sacs, car votre argent m’était bien parvenu.” Puis il fit délier Siméon devant eux.	23 But he answered: Peace be with you, fear not: your God, and the God of your Father hath given you treasure in your sacks. For the money, which you gave me, I have for good. And he brought Simeon out to them.
24 L’homme fit entrer les frères dans la maison de Joseph. Il leur donna de l’eau et ils se lavèrent les pieds. On donna aussi du fourrage à leurs ânes.	24 And having brought them into the house, he fetched water, and they washed their feet, and he gave provender to their asses.
25 Alors ils préparèrent leur cadeau en attendant l’arrivée de Joseph, car on leur avait dit qu’ils prendraient là leur repas de midi.	25 But they made ready the presents, against Joseph came at noon: for they had heard that they should eat bread there.
26 Quand Joseph rentra à la maison, ils lui offrirent le cadeau qu’ils avaient dans les mains, puis ils se prosternèrent jusqu’à terre devant lui.	26 Then Joseph came into his house, and they offered him the presents holding them in their hands, and they bowed down with their face to the ground.
27 Il leur demanda comment ils allaient: “Votre père, dit-il, ce vieillard dont vous m’avez parlé, est-il en bonne santé? Est-il toujours en vie?”	27 But he, courteously saluting them again, asked them, saying: Is the old man your father in health, of whom uou told me? Is he yet living?
28 Ils lui répondirent: “Ton serviteur, notre père, est en bonne santé, il est encore vivant.” Puis ils s’agenouillèrent et se prosternèrent.	28 And they answered: Thy servant our father is in health, he is yet living. And bowing themselves they made obeisance to him.
29 Joseph leva les yeux et vit son frère Benjamin, le fils de sa mère: “Est-ce bien là votre plus jeune frère dont vous m’avez parlé?” Se tournant vers lui, il lui dit: “Que Dieu te bénisse, mon fils!”	29 And Joseph lifting up his eyes, saw Benjamin his brother, by the same mother, and said: Is this your young brother, of whom you told me? And he said: God be gracious to thee, my son.
30 Alors, soudain, Joseph eut envie de pleurer car il était bouleversé à la vue de son frère. Il entra donc dans ses appartements et pleura.	30 And he made haste becouse his heart was moved upon his brother, and tears gushed out: And going into his chamber he wept.
31 Puis il se lava le visage et sortit. Il se reprit et dit: “Servez le repas!”	31 And when he had washed his face, coming out again, he refrained himself, and said: Set bread on the table.
32 On servit Joseph à part, on servit à part ses frères, à part encore les Égyptiens invités; car les Égyptiens ne peuvent pas prendre un repas avec des Hébreux: ce serait une honte pour l’Égypte.	32 And when it was set on, for Joseph apart, and for his brethren apart, for the Egyptians also that ate with him, apart, (for it is unlawful for the Egyptians to eat with the Hebrews, and they think such a feast profane:)
33 Ils s’assirent donc en face de lui, chacun selon son rang, de l’aîné jusqu’au plus jeune. Ils se regardaient l’un l’autre, stupéfaits.	33 They sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his age. And they wondered very much:
34 Alors Joseph prit dans les plats qui étaient devant lui des portions pour chacun d’eux, mais la portion de Benjamin était cinq fois plus grande que la portion des autres. Avec lui ils burent du vin au point d’être plutôt gais.	34 Taking the messes which they received of him: and the greater mess came to Benjamin, so that it exceeded by five parts. And they drank, and were merry with him.
