1 Deux ans plus tard, le Pharaon eut également un rêve. Il se trouvait sur les bords du Nil	1 After two years, Pharaoh saw a dream. He thought himself to be standing above a river,
2 et il voyait monter du Nil sept vaches de belle apparence, bien grasses, qui paissaient au milieu des roseaux.	2 from which ascended seven cows, exceedingly beautiful and stout. And they pastured in marshy places.
3 Mais bientôt sept autres vaches montèrent du Nil: elles étaient laides et très maigres. Elles se rangèrent à côté des premières, sur la rive du Nil,	3 Likewise, another seven emerged from the river, filthy and thoroughly emaciated. And they pastured on the same bank of the river, in green places.
4 et ces vaches laides et très maigres mangèrent les sept vaches de belle apparence et bien grasses. C’est alors que le Pharaon s’éveilla.	4 And they devoured those whose appearance and condition of body was so wonderful. Pharaoh, having been awakened,
5 Il se rendormit et eut un second rêve: sept épis montaient d’une seule tige, ils étaient lourds et bons.	5 slept again, and he saw another dream. Seven ears of grain sprung up on one stalk, full and well-formed.
6 Mais bientôt, sept épis maigres et roussis par le vent d’est poussèrent à côté d’eux,	6 Likewise, other ears of grain, of the same number, rose up, thin and struck with blight,
7 et ces épis maigres dévorèrent les sept épis lourds et pleins. C’est alors que le Pharaon s’éveilla et se rendit compte que c’était un rêve.	7 devouring all the beauty of the first. Pharaoh, when he awakened after his rest,
8 À son réveil, le matin suivant, le Pharaon avait l’esprit troublé. Il convoqua donc tous les magiciens d’Égypte et tous les sages. Pharaon leur raconta les songes qu’il avait eus, mais personne ne pouvait lui en donner la signification.	8 and when morning arrived, being terrified with fear, sent to all the interpreters of Egypt and to all of the wise men. And when they were summoned, he explained to them his dream; but there was no one who could interpret it.
9 Alors le chef du service des boissons parla à Pharaon: “Je vais aujourd’hui rappeler ma faute!	9 Then at last the chief cupbearer, remembering, said, “I confess my sin.
10 Le Pharaon s’était mis en colère contre ses serviteurs, et il m’avait enfermé dans la maison du chef des gardes, moi et le chef du service des pains.	10 The king, being angry with his servants, ordered me and the chief miller of grain to be forced into the prison of the leader of the military.
11 Or dans la même nuit nous avons eu un rêve, lui et moi, et les deux rêves demandaient une interprétation.	11 There, in one night, both of us saw a dream presaging the future.
12 Il y avait avec nous un jeune Hébreu, serviteur du chef des gardes, et quand nous lui avons raconté nos rêves, il nous les a expliqués, donnant à chacun la signification du songe qu’il avait eu.	12 In that place, there was a Hebrew, a servant of the same commander of the military, to whom we explained our dreams.
13 Et tout est arrivé comme il nous l’avait dit: j’ai été rétabli à mon poste, et l’autre a été pendu.”	13 Whatever we heard was proven afterwards by the event of the matter. For I was restored to my office, and he was suspended on a cross.”
14 Pharaon envoya donc chercher Joseph. Vite, on le sortit de la prison; on le rasa et il changea de vêtements pour se présenter devant le Pharaon.	14 Immediately, by the king’s authority, Joseph was led out of prison, and they shaved him. And changing his apparel, they presented him to him.
15 Le Pharaon dit à Joseph: “J’ai eu un rêve et il n’y a personne pour me l’expliquer. Mais j’ai entendu dire que lorsqu’on te raconte un rêve, tu en donnes la signification.”	15 And he said to him, “I have seen dreams, and there is no one who can unfold them. I have heard that you are very wise at interpreting these.”
16 Joseph répondit au Pharaon: “Ce n’est pas moi, c’est Dieu qui donnera la bonne réponse au Pharaon.”	16 Joseph responded, “Apart from me, God will respond favorably to Pharaoh.”
17 Le Pharaon raconta donc le songe à Joseph: “Je me tenais au bord du Nil,	17 Therefore, Pharaoh explained what he had seen: “I thought myself to be standing on the bank of a river,
18 et voici que du Nil montaient sept vaches bien grasses et de belle apparence, qui se mirent à paître au milieu des roseaux.	18 and seven cows climbed up from the river, exceedingly beautiful and full of flesh. And they grazed in a pasture of a marshy greenery.
19 Mais aussitôt derrière elles montèrent sept autres vaches malades, affreuses à voir, et si maigres que je n’en ai jamais vu de si laides dans toute l’Égypte.	19 And behold, there followed after these, another seven cows, with such deformity and emaciation as I had never seen in the land of Egypt.
20 Les vaches maigres et laides mangèrent les sept premières vaches, celles qui étaient bien grasses.	20 These devoured and consumed the first,
21 Mais quand elles les eurent avalées, on pouvait se demander où elles les avaient mises, car elles étaient toujours aussi laides qu’auparavant. C’est alors que je me suis réveillé.	21 giving no indication of being full. But they remained in the same state of emaciation and squalor. Awakening, but being weighed down into sleep again,
22 “Et puis j’ai eu un autre rêve: sept épis montaient d’une seule tige, ils étaient remplis et beaux,	22 I saw a dream. Seven ears of grain sprang up on one stalk, full and very beautiful.
23 mais bientôt, sept épis secs, maigres, brûlés par le vent d’est, poussèrent à côté d’eux.	23 Likewise, another seven, thin and struck with blight, rose up from the stalk.
24 Alors les épis maigres avalèrent les sept bons épis. J’en ai parlé aux magiciens, mais personne n’a pu me donner d’explication.”	24 And they devoured the beauty of the first. I explained this dream to the interpreters, and there is no one who can unfold it.”
25 Joseph dit au Pharaon: “Les deux songes du Pharaon ne font qu’un. Dieu a révélé au Pharaon ce qu’il va faire.	25 Joseph responded: “The dream of the king is one. What God will do, he has revealed to Pharaoh.
26 Les sept bonnes vaches sont sept années, et les sept bons épis sont sept années: c’est le même songe.	26 The seven beautiful cows, and the seven full ears of grain, are seven years of abundance. And so the force of the dreams is understood to be the same.
27 Les sept vaches maigres et laides qui montaient derrière elles sont encore sept années, comme les sept épis vides, brûlés par le vent d’est: ce sont les sept mêmes années de famine.	27 Likewise, the seven thin and emaciated cows, which ascended after them, and the seven thin ears of grain, which were struck with the burning wind, are seven approaching years of famine.
28 C’est ce que j’ai dit au Pharaon: Dieu a fait connaître au Pharaon ce qu’il va faire.	28 These will be fulfilled in this order.
29 Voici qu’arrivent pour l’Égypte sept années de grande abondance,	29 Behold, there will arrive seven years of great fertility throughout the entire land of Egypt.
30 mais après elles viendront sept années de famine. L’Égypte oubliera le temps de l’abondance, car la famine dévorera le pays.	30 After this, there will follow another seven years, of such great barrenness that all the former abundance will be delivered into oblivion. For the famine will consume all the land,
31 On ne se souviendra plus de l’abondance dans le pays, tant sera grande la famine qui suivra.	31 and the greatness of this destitution will cause the greatness of the abundance to be lost.
32 “Si le songe a été par deux fois répété au Pharaon, c’est que la chose est bien décidée de la part de Dieu, et que Dieu va se dépêcher de l’accomplir.	32 Now, as to what you saw the second time, it is a dream pertaining to the same thing. It is an indication of its firmness, because the word of God shall be done, and it shall be completed swiftly.
33 Aussi, dès maintenant, il faut que Pharaon choisisse un homme intelligent et sage pour gouverner toute l’Égypte.	33 Now therefore, let the king provide a wise and industrious man, and place him over the land of Egypt,
34 Le Pharaon établira des fonctionnaires sur tout le pays de façon à prélever le cinquième des récoltes d’Égypte pendant les années d’abondance.	34 so that he may appoint overseers throughout all the regions. And let a fifth part of the fruits, throughout the seven fertile years
35 Les fonctionnaires ramasseront toute la nourriture de ces bonnes années qui viennent et, sous l’autorité du Pharaon, ils feront des réserves de blé dans les villes et les garderont.	35 that now have already begun to occur, be gathered into storehouses. And let all the grain be stored away, under the power of Pharaoh, and let it be kept in the cities.
36 Il y aura ainsi de la nourriture en réserve dans le pays, en vue des sept années de famine qui viendront en Égypte, et le pays ne sera pas ruiné par la famine.”	36 And let it be prepared for the future famine of seven years, which will oppress Egypt, and then the land will not be consumed by destitution.”
37 Ce discours plut au Pharaon et à tous ses serviteurs.	37 The counsel pleased Pharaoh and all his ministers.
38 Le Pharaon se tourna vers ses serviteurs et leur dit: “Trouverons-nous un homme qui ait comme lui l’esprit de Dieu?”	38 And he said to them, “Would we be able to find another such man, who is full of the Spirit of God?”
39 Puis le Pharaon dit à Joseph: “Après que Dieu t’a révélé tout cela, il n’y a sûrement personne d’aussi intelligent et capable que toi.	39 Therefore, he said to Joseph: “Because God has revealed to you all that you have said, would I be able to find anyone wiser and as much like you?
40 C’est donc toi qui seras à la tête de ma maison, et tout le peuple sera soumis à tes ordres. Seul le trône me fera plus grand que toi.”	40 You will be over my house, and to the authority of your mouth, all the people will show obedience. Only in one way, in the throne of the kingdom, will I go before you.”
41 Le Pharaon dit encore à Joseph: “Regarde, je t’ai donné autorité sur tout le pays d’Égypte.”	41 And again, Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Behold, I have appointed you over the entire land of Egypt.”
42 Alors le Pharaon enleva son anneau pour le passer au doigt de Joseph, il le revêtit d’habits de lin fin et mit un collier d’or à son cou.	42 And he took the ring from his own hand, and he gave it into his hand. And he clothed him with a robe of fine linen, and he placed a necklace of gold around his neck.
43 Il le fit monter sur le second de ses chars, et l’on criait devant lui: “Prosternez-vous!” Ce qui revenait à le mettre au-dessus de toute l’Égypte.	43 And he caused him to ascend upon his second swift chariot, with the herald proclaiming that everyone should bend their knee before him, and that they should know that he was governor over the entire land of Egypt.
44 Le Pharaon dit alors à Joseph: “Je suis le Pharaon: sans ton ordre, personne ne lèvera la main ou le pied dans tout le pays d’Égypte!”	44 Likewise, the king said to Joseph: “I am Pharaoh: apart from your authority, no one will move hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.”
45 Le Pharaon donna à Joseph le nom de Sofnat-Panéah, et il lui donna pour femme Asnat, fille de Poti-Phéra, prêtre d’On.	45 And he changed his name and called him, in the Egyptian tongue: ‘Savior of the world.’ And he gave him as a wife, Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, priest of Heliopolis. And so Joseph went out into the land of Egypt.
46 Joseph avait 30 ans quand il se présenta devant Pharaon, le roi d’Égypte. Joseph se retira de devant le Pharaon et commença à parcourir tout le pays d’Égypte.	46 (Now he was thirty years old when he stood in the sight of king Pharaoh.) And he traveled throughout the regions of Egypt.
47 Pendant les sept années d’abondance, la terre produisit en quantité.	47 And the fertility of the seven years arrived. And when the grain fields were reduced to sheaves, these were gathered into the storehouses of Egypt.
48 Il rassembla donc toute la nourriture de ces sept années où l’abondance régnait en Égypte, et la mit en réserve dans les villes. Il rassembla à l’intérieur des villes la nourriture qui venait de la campagne.	48 And now all the abundance of grain was stored away in every city.
49 Ainsi Joseph entassa une quantité de blé impossible à compter, comme le sable de la mer: oui c’était vraiment sans mesure!	49 And there was such a great abundance of wheat that it was comparable to the sands of the sea, and its bounty exceeded all measure.
50 Avant l’arrivée de la famine, Asnat, fille de Poti-Phéra, prêtre d’On, donna à Joseph deux fils.	50 Then, before the famine arrived, Joseph had two sons born, whom Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, priest of Heliopolis, bore for him.
51 Joseph appela l’aîné Manassé, car, dit-il: “Dieu m’a fait oublier toute ma peine et la maison de mon père.”	51 And he called the name of the firstborn Manasseh, saying, “God has caused me to forget all my labors and the house of my father.”
52 Et le second, il l’appela Éphraïm, car, dit-il: “Dieu m’a fait grandir dans le pays de ma misère.”	52 Likewise, he named the second Ephraim, saying, “God has caused me to increase in the land of my poverty.”
53 Après les sept années d’abondance du pays d’Égypte,	53 And so, when the seven years of fertility that occurred in Egypt had passed,
54 arrivèrent les sept années de famine, comme l’avait annoncé Joseph. C’était la famine dans tous les pays, mais en Égypte il y avait du pain.	54 the seven years of destitution, which Joseph had predicted, began to arrive. And the famine prevailed throughout the whole world, but there was bread in all the land of Egypt.
55 Puis l’Égypte à son tour connut la faim et le peuple fit appel au Pharaon pour avoir du pain. Le Pharaon dit à toute l’Égypte: “Allez trouver Joseph, et faites ce qu’il vous dira.”	55 And being hungry, the people cried out to Pharaoh, asking for provisions. And he said to them: “Go to Joseph. And do whatever he will tell you.”
56 La famine s’aggravait dans tout le pays. Alors Joseph ouvrit les réserves et vendit du blé à l’Égypte au fur et à mesure que la famine s’y installait.	56 Then the famine increased daily in all the land. And Joseph opened all of the storehouses and sold to the Egyptians. For the famine had oppressed them also.
57 De tous les pays on venait aussi en Égypte pour acheter du blé à Joseph, car la famine était grande sur toute la terre.	57 And all the provinces came to Egypt, to buy food and to temper the misfortune of their destitution.
