Iob 9

BIBBIA VOLGARE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Rispose Iob, e disse:	1 Job spoke next. He said:
2 Veramente io so che così fia, e che non è giustificato l'uomo assomigliato a Dio.	2 Indeed, I know it is as you say: how could anyone claim to be upright before God?
3 S'elli vorrae contendere con lui, non potrae rispondere a lui una cosa delle mille.	3 Anyone trying to argue matters with him, could not give him one answer in a thousand.
4 Di savio cuore è, e forte di fortezza; chi resiste a lui, e hae pace?	4 Among the wisest and the hardiest, who then can successful y defy him?
5 Chè trapassa li monti; coloro, chi li ha sovvertiti nel furore suo, non seppono.	5 He moves the mountains, though they do not know it; he throws them down when he is angry.
6 Chè commuove la terra del luogo suo, e le colonne sue sono percosse.	6 He shakes the earth, and moves it from its place, making al its pil ars tremble.
7 Chè comanda al sole, e non nasce; e le stelle chiude quasi come sotto segnale.	7 The sun, at his command, forbears to rise, and on the stars he sets a seal.
8 Chè solo istende i cieli, e va sopra l' onde del mare.	8 He and no other has stretched out the heavens and trampled on the back of the Sea.
9 Chè fa (le sette stelle nel polo artico, e) Orion (lo qual è una stella dinanzi a uno segno chiamato) Arturo e Iadas (cioè alcune stelle pluviali) e le cose ascoste dello austro.	9 He has made the Bear and Orion, the Pleiades and the Mansions of the South.
10 Chè fa le grandi cose e da non comprendere e maravigliose, delle quali non è numero.	10 The works he does are great and unfathomable, and his marvels cannot be counted.
11 Se verrà a me, nol vedrò; se se n'andrà, non lo intenderd.	11 If he passes me, I do not see him; he slips by, imperceptible to me.
12 Se repentinamente addomanderà, chi li risponderà? Ovvero chi gli puote dire: perchè hai tu fatto così?	12 If he snatches his prey, who is going to stop him or dare to ask, 'What are you doing?'
13 Iddio, l'ira del quale non si puote resistere, e sotto lo quale si chinano coloro che portano lo mondo.	13 God does not renounce his anger: beneath him, Rahab's minions stil lie prostrate.
14 Adunque quanto sono io, che risponda a lui, e favelli con lui colle parole mie?	14 And here am I, proposing to defend myself and select my arguments against him!
15 Che ancora, se io avrò qualche cosa giusta, non risponderò; ma lo mio giudice pregheroe.	15 Even if I am upright, what point is there in answering him? I can only plead for mercy with my judge!
16 E quando averae esaudito me chiamante, non credo ch' egli abbia esaudita la voce mia.	16 And if he deigned to answer my citation, I cannot believe he would listen to what I said,
17 Certo nella tempesta triterà me, e moltiplicherà ancora le ferite mie senza cagione.	17 he who crushes me for one hair, who, for no reason, wounds and wounds again,
18 Non permette che lo spirito mio si riposi, e riempie me d'amaritudine.	18 not even letting me regain my breath, with so much bitterness he fills me!
19 Se la fortezza è addomandata, robustissimo è; se equità di giudicio, niuno ardisce di dire testimonianza per me.	19 Shal I try force? Look how strong he is! Or go to court? But who wil summon him?
20 Se io giustificare mi vorrò, la bocca mia condannerà me; se io innocente mi mostrerò, reo mi comproverà.	20 If I prove myself upright, his mouth may condemn me, even if I am innocent, he may pronounce meperverse.
21 Ancora se semplice io sarò, di questo medesimo non saprà l'anima mia; e rincrescerà a me della vita mia.	21 But am I innocent? I am no longer sure, and life itself I despise!
22 Una cosa è ch' io hoe favellata, e lo innocente e lo malvagio lui consuma.	22 It is al one, and hence I boldly say: he destroys innocent and guilty alike.
23 Se egli tormenta, uccida una volta; e non rida della pena delli innocenti.	23 When a sudden deadly scourge descends, he laughs at the plight of the innocent.
24 La terra è data nelle mani del malvagio, e lo volto de' giudici suoi copre; la quale cosa se quello non è, chi è adunque?	24 When a country falls into the power of the wicked, he veils the faces of its judges. Or if not he, whoelse?
25 E li di miei più veloci furono che lo corriere; fuggirono, e non viddero lo bene.	25 My days pass: more swiftly than a runner they flee away with never a glimpse of happiness,
26 Trapassoro quasi navi le quali portano poma, e sì come l'aquila volante all' esca.	26 they skim past like a reed canoe, like an eagle swooping on its prey.
27 Quando dirò: non così favelleroe, commuto la faccia mia, e di dolore sono tormentato.	27 If I decide to stifle my complaining, change countenance, and wear a smiling face,
28 Temea tutte le opere mie, sapendo che non perdoneresti a' delinquenti.	28 fear seizes me at the thought of al my woes, for I know you do not regard me as innocent.
29 Ora se così malvagio sono, perchè indarno m' affaticai?	29 And if I have done wrong, why should I put myself to useless trouble?
30 Se lavato saroe sì come con la neve, e mondissime risplenderanno le mie mani;	30 If I wash myself in melted snow, clean my hands with soda,
31 pure nelle brutture intignerai me, e abbomineranno me le vestimenta mie.	31 you wil only plunge me into the dung, til my clothes themselves recoil from me!
32 Nè certo all' uomo, ch' è simile di me, risponderò; nè a colui che meco possa essere udito nello eguale giudicio.	32 For he is not human like me: impossible for me to answer him or appear alongside him in court.
33 Non è chi l' uno e l'altro possa riprendere, e porre la mano sua in amendue.	33 There is no arbiter between us, to lay his hand on both,
34 Tolga da me la virga sua, e la paura sua non spaventi me.	34 to stay his rod from me, or keep away his daunting terrors.
35 Favelleroe, e non temerò lui; nè non posso temendo rispondere.	35 Nonetheless, unafraid of him, I shal speak: since I do not see myself like that at al !
