Genesis 37

1 Jacó habitou na região onde seu pai havia morado, na terra de Canaã.	1 Now Jacob lived in the land of Canaan, where his father sojourned.
2 Eis a história da descendência de Jacó: José, ainda jovem, com a idade de dezessete anos, apascentava o rebanho com seus irmãos, os filhos de Bala e os filhos de Zelfa, mulheres de seu pai; e ele contou ao seu pai as más conversas dos irmãos.	2 And these are his generations. Joseph, when he was sixteen years old, was pasturing the flock with his brothers, when he was still a boy. And he was with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, the wives of his father. And he accused his brothers to their father of a most sinful crime.
3 Israel amava José mais do que todos os outros filhos, porque ele era o filho de sua velhice; e mandara-lhe fazer uma túnica de várias cores.	3 Now Israel loved Joseph above all his sons, because he had conceived him in his old age. And he made him a tunic, woven of many colors.
4 Seus irmãos, vendo que seu pai o preferia a eles, conceberam ódio contra ele e não podiam mais tratá-lo com bons modos.	4 Then his brothers, seeing that he was loved by his father more than all his other sons, hated him, and they were not able to say anything peacefully to him.
5 Ora, José teve um sonho, e o contou aos seus irmãos, que o detestaram ainda mais:	5 Then it also happened that he recounted the vision of a dream to his brothers, for which reason a greater hatred began to be nurtured.
6 "Ouvi, disse-lhes ele, o sonho que tive:	6 And he said to them, “Listen to my dream that I saw.
7 estávamos ligando feixes no campo, e eis que o meu feixe se levantou e se pôs de pé, enquanto os vossos o cercavam e se prostravam diante dele."	7 I thought we were binding sheaves in the field. And my sheaf seemed to rise up and stand, and your sheaves, standing in a circle, reverenced my sheaf.”
8 Seus irmãos disseram-lhe: "Quererias, porventura, reinar sobre nós e tornar-te nosso senhor?" E odiaram-no ainda mais por causa de seus sonhos e de suas palavras.	8 His brothers responded: “Would you be our king? Or will we be subject to your dominion?” Therefore, this matter of his dreams and words provided kindling to their envy and hatred.
9 José teve ainda outro sonho, que contou aos seus irmãos. "Tive, disse ele, ainda um sonho: o sol, a lua e onze estrelas prostravam-se diante de mim."	9 Likewise, he saw another dream, which he explained to his brothers, saying, “I saw by a dream, as if the sun, and the moon, and eleven stars were reverencing me.”
10 Ele contou isso ao seu pai e aos seus irmãos, mas foi repreendido por seu pai: "Que significa, disse-lhe ele, este sonho que tiveste? Viremos, porventura, eu, tua mãe e teus irmãos, a nos prostrar por terra diante de ti?"	10 And when he had related this to his father and brothers, his father rebuked him, and he said: “What does it mean to you, this dream that you have seen? Should I, and your mother, and your brothers reverence you upon the earth?”
11 Seus irmãos ficaram, pois, com inveja dele, mas seu pai guardou a lembrança desse acontecimento.	11 Therefore, his brothers were envious of him. Yet truly, his father considered the matter silently.
12 Os irmãos de José foram apascentar os rebanhos de seu pai em Siquém.	12 And while his brothers were lodging at Shechem, pasturing their father’s flocks,
13 Israel disse a José: "Teus irmãos guardam os rebanhos em Siquém. Vem: vou mandar-te a eles." "Eis-me aqui", respondeu José.	13 Israel said to him: “Your brothers are pasturing the sheep at Shechem. Come, I will send you to them.” And when he answered,
14 "Vai, pois, ver se tudo corre bem a teus irmãos e ao rebanho, e traze-me notícias deles." Enviou-o do vale de Hebron, e José foi a Siquém.	14 “I am ready,” he said to him, “Go, and see if everything is prospering with your brothers and the cattle, and report to me what is happening.” So, having been sent from the valley of Hebron, he arrived at Shechem.
15 Um homem encontrou-o errando pelo campo: "Que buscas?" perguntou ele.	15 And a man found him wandering in a field, and he asked him what he was seeking.
16 "Busco meus irmãos, respondeu ele. Dize-me onde apascentam os rebanhos."	16 So he responded: “I seek my brothers. Tell me where they pasture the flocks.”
17 E o homem respondeu: "Partiram daqui e ouvi-os dizer: Vamos a Dotain." Partiu então José em busca dos seus irmãos e encontrou-os em Dotain.	17 And the man said to him: “They have withdrawn from this place. But I heard them saying, ‘Let us go to Dothan.’ ” Therefore, Joseph continued on after his brothers, and he found them at Dothan.
18 Eles o viram de longe. Antes que José se aproximasse, combinaram entre si como o haveriam de matar;	18 And, when they had seen him from afar, before he approached them, they decided to kill him.
19 e disseram: "Eis o sonhador que chega.	19 And they said one to another: “Behold, the dreamer approaches.
20 Vamos, matemo-lo e atiremo-lo numa cisterna; diremos depois que uma fera o devorou; e então veremos de que lhe aproveitaram os seus sonhos."	20 Come, let us kill him and cast him into the old cistern. And let us say: ‘an evil wild beast has devoured him.’ And then it will become apparent what his dreams will do for him.”
21 Ouvindo-o, porém, Rubem, quis livra-lo de suas mãos: "Não lhe tiremos a vida, disse ele.	21 But Reuben, on hearing this, strove to free him from their hands, and he said:
22 Não derrameis sangue. Jogai-o naquela cisterna, no deserto, mas não levanteis vossa mão contra ele." Pois Rubem pensava livrá-lo de suas mãos para o reconduzir ao pai.	22 “Do not take away his life, nor shed blood. But throw him into this cistern, which is in the wilderness, and so keep your hands harmless.” But he said this, wanting to rescue him from their hands, so as to return him to his father.
23 Quando José se aproximou de seus irmãos, eles o despojaram de sua túnica, daquela bela túnica de várias cores que trazia,	23 And so, as soon as he came to his brothers, they very quickly stripped him of his tunic, which was ankle-length and woven of many colors,
24 e jogaram-no numa cisterna velha, que não tinha água.	24 and they cast him into an old cistern, which held no water.
25 E, sentando-se para comer, eis que, levantando os olhos, viram surgir no horizonte uma caravana de ismaelitas vinda de Galaad. Seus camelos estavam carregados de resina, de bálsamo e de ládano, que transportavam para o Egito.	25 And sitting down to eat bread, they saw some Ishmaelites, travelers coming from Gilead, with their camels, carrying spices, and resin, and oil of myrrh into Egypt.
26 Então Judá disse aos seus irmãos: "Que nos aproveita matar nosso irmão e ocultar o seu sangue?	26 Therefore, Judah said to his brothers: “What will it profit us, if we kill our brother and conceal his blood?
27 Vinde e vendamo-lo aos ismaelitas. Não levantemos nossas mãos contra ele, pois, afinal, é nosso irmão, nossa carne." Seus irmãos concordaram.	27 It is better that he be sold to the Ishmaelites, and then our hands will not be defiled. For he is our brother and our flesh.” His brothers agreed to his words.
28 E, quando passaram os negociantes madianitas, tiraram José da cisterna e venderam-no por vinte moedas de prata aos ismaelitas, que o levaram para o Egito.	28 And when the Midianite merchants were passing by, they drew him from the cistern, and they sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. And these led him into Egypt.
29 Rubem voltou à cisterna, e eis que José já não estava ali.	29 And Reuben, returning to the cistern, did not find the boy.
30 Rasgou então suas vestes e voltou para junto dos seus irmãos: "O menino desapareceu, disse ele. E eu, para onde irei?"	30 And rending his garments, he went to his brothers and said, “The boy is not present, and so where shall I go?”
31 Tomaram então a túnica de José, mataram um cabrito e a mergulharam no seu sangue.	31 Then they took his tunic, and they dipped it in the blood of a young goat, which they had killed,
32 E mandaram-na levar ao seu pai com esta mensagem: "Eis o que encontramos: vê se não é, porventura, a túnica do teu filho."	32 sending those who carried it to their father, and they said: “We found this. See whether it is the tunic of your son or not.”
33 Jacó reconheceu-a e exclamou: "É a túnica de meu filho! Uma fera o devorou! José foi estraçalhado!"	33 And when the father acknowledged it, he said: “It is the tunic of my son. An evil wild beast has eaten him; a beast has devoured Joseph.”
34 E, rasgando as vestes, cobriu-se de um saco, e chorou o seu filho por muito tempo.	34 And tearing his garments, he was clothed in haircloth, mourning his son for a long time.
35 Todos os seus filhos e filhas vieram consolá-lo, mas ele não aceitou nenhuma condolência: "É chorando, disse ele, que descerei para junto de meu filho na habitação dos mortos." Foi assim que o seu pai o chorou.	35 Then, when all of his sons gathered together to ease their father’s sorrow, he was not willing to accept consolation, but he said: “I will descend in mourning to my son in the underworld.” And while he persevered in weeping,
36 Os madianitas venderam-no a Putifar, no Egito, eunuco do faraó e chefe da guarda.	36 the Midianites in Egypt sold Joseph to Potiphar, a eunuch of Pharaoh, instructor of the soldiers.
