LA SACRA BIBBIA	DOUAI-RHEIMS
1 Ho poi esaminato tutti i soprusi che si fanno sotto il sole. Ho considerato il pianto degli oppressi e ho visto che nessuno li consola. Dalla mano dei loro oppressori non esce che violenza: nessuno li consola.	1 I turned myself to other things, and I saw the oppressions that are done under the sun, and the tears of the innocent, and they had no comforter; and they were not able to resist their violence, being destitute of help from any.
2 Allora ho detto beati i morti che già sono morti, più dei vivi che ancora son vivi.	2 And I praised the dead rather than the living:
3 Ma meglio ancora di tutti e due, chi ancora non è nato, perché ancora non ha visto tutto il male che si fa sotto il sole.	3 And I judged him happier than them both, that is not yet born, nor hath seen the evils that are done under the sun.
4 Ho visto anche che tutta la fatica e tutto l'impegno che l'uomo mette nelle sue opere non è che gelosia reciproca. Anche questo è vanità e occupazione senza senso.	4 Again I considered all the labours of men, and I remarked that their industries are exposed to the envy of their neighhour: so in this also there is vanity, and fruitless care.
5 Lo stolto tiene le mani in mano e sciupa la sua vita.	5 The fool foldeth his hands together, and eateth his own flesh, saying:
6 Val più una manciata con riposo che due manciate con fatica: attività senza senso;	6 Better is a handful with rest, than both hands full with labour, and vexation of mind.
7 e così ancora una volta ho visto la vanità sotto il sole.	7 Considering I found also another vanity under the sun:
8 C'è un uomo che non ha nessuno, né un figlio né un fratello, eppure la sua fatica non conosce limiti; né smette mai di sognare nuove ricchezze. E per chi si affatica e si priva di star bene? Anche questo è vanità e una brutta occupazione.	8 There is but one, and he hath not a second, no child, no brother, and yet he ceaseth not to labour, neither are his eyes satisfied with riches, neither doth he reflect, saying: For whom do I labour, and defraud my soul of good things? in this also is vanity, and a grievous vexation.
9 Due stanno meglio di uno, perché hanno una buona ricompensa per la loro fatica.	9 It is better therefore that two should be together, than one: for they have the advantage of their society:
10 Se infatti uno cade, può essere rialzato dal compagno: guai a chi è solo, se cade e non c'è chi lo rialzi.	10 If one fall he shall be supported by the other: woe to him that is alone, for when he falleth, he hath none to lift him up.
11 Anche se si va a letto, in due ci si può scaldare, ma chi è solo come fa a scaldarsi?	11 And if two lie together, they shall warm one another: how shall one alone be warmed?
12 E se uno è aggredito, in due possono resistere: non si spezza facilmente una fune a più capi.	12 And if a man prevail against one, two shall withstand him: a threefold cord is not easily broken.
13 Meglio un giovane di bassa origine, ma sapiente, che un re vecchio, ma stolto, che non sappia più usare della propria mente.	13 Better is a child that is poor and wise, than a king that is old and foolish, who knoweth not to foresee for hereafter.
14 Quello è uscito dalla prigione per salire sul trono, pur essendo nato quando quell'altro regnava.	14 Because out of prison and chains sometimes a man cometh forth to a kingdom: and another born king is consumed with poverty.
15 Ho visto allora tutta la gente che vive sotto il sole schierarsi dalla parte del giovane, che va a mettersi nel posto dell'altro.	15 I saw all men living, that walk under the sun with the second young man, who shall rise up in his place.
16 Era innumerevole tutta la gente che lo seguiva. Eppure quelli che verranno dopo non saranno contenti di lui! Anche questo è vanità e occupazione senza senso.	16 The number of the people, of all that were before him is infinite: and they that shall come afterwards, shall not rejoice in him: but this also is vanity, and vexation of spirit.
17 Quando ti rechi al tempio, sta' bene attento a come ci vai, è meglio accostarsi al tempio con l'animo disposto all'ubbidienza che offrire sacrifici come fanno gli stolti, per quanto non sappiano di far male.	17 Keep thy foot, when thou goest into the house of God, and draw nigh to hear. For much better is obedience, than the victims of fools, who know not what evil they do.
