1 - E ora, o Signore Onnipotente, Dio d'Israele, un'anima nelle angustie, uno spirito angosciato grida a te.	1 “ ‘And now, O Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, the soul in anguish and the troubled spirit cry out to you.
2 Ascolta, o Signore, e abbi pietà, perchè sei un Dio misericordioso; abbi compassione di noi che abbiamo peccato contro di te, altrimenti	2 Listen, O Lord, and be merciful, for you are a merciful God, and so be merciful to us, for we have sinned before you.
3 tu resti assiso in sempiterno, e noi saremo perduti per sempre!	3 For you are enthroned in eternity, but we will pass away in time.
4 Signore Onnipotente, Dio d'Israele, ascolta la prece dei morenti d'Israele, e dei figli di coloro che hanno peccato al tuo cospetto, che non diedero retta alla voce del Signore loro Dio, e fecero sì che i mali si attaccassero a noi.	4 O Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, listen now to the prayer of the dead of Israel and of their sons, who have sinned before you and have not listened to the voice of the Lord their God, and have joined themselves to evil.
5 Non ricordarti delle iniquità dei nostri padri, ma della tua mano e del tuo nome in questo momento;	5 Remember not the iniquities of our fathers, but remember your hand and your name at this time.
6 perchè tu sei il Signore Dio nostroe noi ti loderemo, o Signore.	6 For you are the Lord our God, and we will praise you, O Lord.
7 Per questo hai messo il tuo timore nei nostri cuori, affinchè invochiamo il tuo nome e ti lodiamo nel nostro esilio, dove tu ci ha dispersi, or che ci ravvediamo dall'iniquità dei nostri padri, che hanno peccato nel tuo cospetto.	7 And for this reason, you have imparted your fear into our hearts, and also, so that we may call upon your name and may praise you in our captivity, for we are converted from the iniquity of our fathers, who sinned before you.
8 Ecco che noi siamo oggi nel nostro esilioin ischerno e in maledizione e in espiazione, per tutte le iniquità dei nostri padri, che si ritirano da te, Signore Dio nostro. -	8 And, behold, we are still in our captivity on this day, where you have scattered us into disgrace, and into slander, and into sin, according to all the iniquities of our fathers, who withdrew from you, O Lord our God.
9 Ascolta, Israele, precetti di vita, porgi gli orecchi per imparar prudenza.	9 Listen, O Israel, to the commandments of life! Pay attention, so that you may learn prudence!
10 Che vuol dire, Israele, che sei sopra un suolo nemico?	10 How is it, O Israel, that you are in the land of your enemies,
11 Ti trascini sfinito in terra straniera? già coi piedi che toccano la tomba, già nel numero di quei che scendono nella fossa.	11 that you have grown old in a foreign land, that you are defiled with the dead, that you are regarded as among those who are descending into hell?
12 Ah! tu hai abbandonato la sorgente della Sapienza!	12 You have forsaken the fountain of wisdom.
13 Perchè se avessi camminato pel sentiero di Dio, avresti certo abitato in una pace perpetua.	13 For if you had walked in the way of God, you would certainly have lived in everlasting peace.
14 Poni mente dov'è la prudenza, dov'è la forza, dov'è l'intelligenza; affinchè capisca anche dove sia la longevità e la vita, dove sia il lume degli occhi e la pace.	14 Learn where prudence is, where virtue is, where understanding is, so that you may know at the same time where long life and prosperity are, where the light of the eyes and peace are.
15 Chi ha scoperto il suo luogo? chi penetrò nei suoi ricettacoli?	15 Who has discovered its place? And who has entered its treasure chamber?
16 Dove sono i dominatori delle nazioni, e i dominatori delle bestie che sono sulla terra?	16 Where are the leaders of the peoples, and those who rule over the beasts that are upon the earth,
17 Quei che si fan trastullo degli uccelli del cielo, quei che ammassano argento e oro, in cui pongono lor fiducia gli uominie all'acquistar non trovan fine?	17 who play among the birds of the air,
18 Quei che lavorano l'argento e stanno intentie non si lasciano rintracciare nelle loro opere?	18 who store up treasures of silver and gold, in which men trust, and with whom there is no end to their acquiring, who work with silver and are anxious about it, and whose works are inexplicable?
19 Sono spariti, son discesi nel fondo d'una tomba, e al loro posto, sorsero altri.	19 They have been banished and have descended to hell, and others are risen up in their place.
20 Nuove generazioni sono venute in luce e hanno abitato la terra, ma ignorarono la via della dottrina	20 The youth have seen the light and have dwelt upon the earth, yet they are ignorant of the way of instruction.
21 e non conobbero i suoi sentieri; i loro figli non la raggiunsero, rimase lungi dai loro sguardi.	21 They have neither understood the paths of it, nor have their sons accepted it. It is far from their face.
22 Essa non si fece udire nella terra di Canaan, non si fece vedere in Teman.	22 It has not been heard of in the land of Canaan, nor has it been seen in Teman.
23 Anche i figli di Agar, ricercatori della prudenza terrena, i mercanti di Merra e di Teman, i favellatori e i ricercatori della prudenza e della dottrina, non conobbero la via della Sapienza, e dei suoi sentieri non fecero menzione.	23 It is likewise with the sons of Hagar, who search for the practicality that is of the earth, the negotiators of Merran and Teman, and the storytellers, and the searchers of discretion and intelligence. Yet the way of wisdom they have not known, nor have they called to mind its paths.
24 O Israele, quanto grande è la Casa di Dio e vasto il luogo dei suoi possedimenti!	24 O Israel, how great is the house of God, and how vast is the place of his possession!
25 È grande e senza limiti, eccelso e immenso.	25 It is great and has no end! It is exalted and immense!
26 Vi furono i Giganti, quegli esseri famosi, che esistettero da principio, di alta statura, cresciuti all'arte della guerra.	26 There were those who were called giants, who existed from the beginning, of great stature, expert in war.
27 Non elesse costoro il Signore, essi non trovarono la via della Sapienzae per questo perirono.	27 The Lord did not choose them, nor did they discover the way of instruction; for this reason they perished,
28 E perchè non ebbero la Sapienza, perirono a causa della loro insipienza.	28 and, because they did not have wisdom, they passed away as a result of their foolishness.
29 Chi salì in cielo e se ne impossessò, e la trasse giù dalle nuvole?	29 Who has gone up into heaven, and taken her, and brought her down from the clouds?
30 Chi varcò i mari e la scoperse, e la importò a prezzo d'oro e d'argento?	30 Who has crossed the sea, and found her, and brought her, chosen instead of gold?
31 Non c'è chi possa sapere le vie per giungere ad essanè indovinare la sua strada.	31 There is no one who is able to know her ways, nor any who can search out her paths.
32 Ma Colui che tutto sa, la conosce e colla sua prudenza l'ha scoperta, colui che costituì la terra pel durar dei secoli, che la riempì di animali e di quadrupedi;	32 Yet he who knows the universe is familiar with her, and in his foresight he invented her, he who prepared the earth for time without end, and filled it with cattle and four-footed beasts,
33 che manda la luce ed essa va, la richiama e gli obbedisce trepidante.	33 who sends out the light, and it goes, and who summoned it, and it obeyed him in fear.
34 Le stelle compaiono ai loro postie brillano liete;	34 Yet the stars have given light from their posts, and they rejoiced.
35 rispondono all'appello e dicono: «Presenti!» e risplendono festeggiando chi le ha fatte.	35 They were called, and so they said, “Here we are,” and they shined with cheerfulness to him who made them.
36 Questi è il Dio nostro e nessun altro gli può stare a paragone.	36 This is our God, and no other can compare to him.
37 Questi ha trovato tutte le vie della Sapienza e la diede a Giacobbe suo servo, a Israele suo prediletto.	37 He invented the way of all instruction, and delivered it to Jacob his child, and to Israel his beloved.
38 E dopo questo è comparso sulla terra, e tra gli uomini ha conversato.	38 After this, he was seen on earth, and he conversed with men.
