1 - Visse dunque Sara centoventisett'anni.	1 The span of Sarah's life was one hundred and twenty-seven years.
2 E morì nella città di Arbee, che è Hebron, nella terra di Canaan; e venne Abramo, e fece lutto, e la pianse.	2 She died in Kiriatharba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham performed the customary mourning rites for her.
3 Terminata la cerimonia funebre, parlò ai figli di Het, dicendo:	3 Then he left the side of his dead one and addressed the Hittites:
4 «Io sono forestiero, di passaggio fra voi; datemi il diritto d'[aver] un sepolcro tra voi, per seppellirvi il mio morto».	4 "Although I am a resident alien among you, sell me from your holdings a piece of property for a burial ground, that I may bury my dead wife."
5 Risposero i figli di Het, e dissero:	5 The Hittites answered Abraham: "Please, sir,
6 «Ascoltaci, signore: Tu sei fra noi un principe di Dio; seppellisci il tuo morto ne' più scelti sepolcri nostri; nessuno potrà impedirti di seppellire nel suo stesso sepolcro il tuo morto».	6 listen to us! You are an elect of God among us. Bury your dead in the choicest of our burial sites. None of us would deny you his burial ground for the burial of your dead."
7 S'alzò Abramo, s'inchinò al popolo della città, cioè ai figli di Het,	7 Abraham, however, began to bow low before the local citizens, the Hittites,
8 e disse loro: «Se piace a voi ch'io seppellisca il mio morto, ascoltatemi; intercedete per me presso Efron figlio di Seor,	8 while he appealed to them: "If you will allow me room for burial of my dead, listen to me! Intercede for me with Ephron, son of Zohar, asking him
9 acciò mi dia quella spelonca doppia che egli ha nell'ultima parte del campo suo; alla vostra presenza me la dia per il dovuto prezzo, sì che io ne abbia il possesso per farvi una sepoltura».	9 to sell me the cave of Machpelah that he owns; it is at the edge of his field. Let him sell it to me in your presence, at its full price, for a burial place."
10 Ora Efron stava in mezzo ai figli di Het. E rispose ad Abramo, ascoltandolo tutti quelli che stavano all'ingresso della porta di quella città; e disse:	10 Now Ephron was present with the Hittites. So Ephron the Hittite replied to Abraham in the hearing of the Hittites who sat on his town council:
11 «No, non si farà così, mio signore; ma tu piuttosto ascolta quel che ti dico: - Io ti dono il campo, e la spelonca che in esso si trova, alla presenza dei figli del mio popolo; e tu seppelliscivi il tuo morto -».	11 "Please, sir, listen to me! I give you both the field and the cave in it; in the presence of my kinsmen I make this gift. Bury your dead!"
12 S'inchinò Abramo dinanzi al popolo della città.	12 But Abraham, after bowing low before the local citizens, addressed Ephron in the hearing of these men:
13 E disse ad Efron, alla presenza del popolo: «Ti prego, ascoltami; io ti darò il prezzo del campo: tu prendilo, e così potrò seppellirvi il mio morto».	13 "Ah, if only you would please listen to me! I will pay you the price of the field. Accept it from me, that I may bury my dead there."
14 Efron rispose:	14 Ephron replied to Abraham, "Please,
15 «Signor mio, ascoltami: la terra che tu chiedi vale quattrocento sicli d'argento; questo è il prezzo fra me e te; è forse gran cosa? Seppellisci il tuo morto».	15 sir, listen to me! A piece of land worth four hundred shekels of silver--what is that between you and me, as long as you can bury your dead?"
16 Il che udito, Abramo pesò la somma chiesta da Efron alla presenza dei figli di Het, quattrocento sicli d'argento della corrente moneta mercantile.	16 Abraham accepted Ephron's terms; he weighed out to him the silver that Ephron had stipulated in the hearing of the Hittites, four hundred shekels of silver at the current market value.
17 Ed il campo già di Efron, nel quale era la spelonca doppia, di faccia a Mambre, tanto il campo quanto la spelonca con tutti gli alberi attorno ai suoi confini, fu stabilito	17 Thus Ephron's field in Machpelah, facing Mamre, together with its cave and all the trees anywhere within its limits, was conveyed
18 in possesso d'Abramo, dinanzi ai figli di Het ed a tutti quelli che eran davanti alla porta di quella città.	18 to Abraham by purchase in the presence of all the Hittites who sat on Ephron's town council.
19 Così Abramo seppellì Sara sua moglie nella spelonca doppia del campo che guardava Mambre, cioè Ebron nel paese di Canaan.	19 After this transaction, Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave of the field of Machpelah, facing Mamre (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan.
20 Ed il campo, con la caverna che era in esso, fu dai figli di Het fermato in possesso d'Abramo, ad uso di sepoltura.	20 Thus the field with its cave was transferred from the Hittites to Abraham as a burial place.
