1 And immediately in the morning, after the leaders of the priests had taken counsel with the elders and the scribes and the entire council, binding Jesus, they led him away and delivered him to Pilate.	1 E subito, al mattino, i capi dei sacerdoti, con gli anziani, gli scribi e tutto il sinedrio, dopo aver tenuto consiglio, misero in catene Gesù, lo portarono via e lo consegnarono a Pilato.
2 And Pilate questioned him, “You are the king of the Jews?” But in response, he said to him, “You are saying it.”	2 Pilato gli domandò: «Tu sei il re dei Giudei?». Ed egli rispose: «Tu lo dici».
3 And the leaders of the priests accused him in many things.	3 I capi dei sacerdoti lo accusavano di molte cose.
4 Then Pilate again questioned him, saying: “Do you not have any response? See how greatly they accuse you.”	4 Pilato lo interrogò di nuovo dicendo: «Non rispondi nulla? Vedi di quante cose ti accusano!».
5 But Jesus continued to give no response, so that Pilate wondered.	5 Ma Gesù non rispose più nulla, tanto che Pilato rimase stupito.
6 Now on the feast day, he was accustomed to release to them one of the prisoners, whomever they requested.	6 A ogni festa, egli era solito rimettere in libertà per loro un carcerato, a loro richiesta.
7 But there was one called Barabbas, who had committed murder in the sedition, who was confined with those of the sedition.	7 Un tale, chiamato Barabba, si trovava in carcere insieme ai ribelli che nella rivolta avevano commesso un omicidio.
8 And when the crowd had ascended, they began to petition him to do as he always did for them.	8 La folla, che si era radunata, cominciò a chiedere ciò che egli era solito concedere.
9 But Pilate answered them and said, “Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?”	9 Pilato rispose loro: «Volete che io rimetta in libertà per voi il re dei Giudei?».
10 For he knew that it was out of envy that the leaders of the priests had betrayed him.	10 Sapeva infatti che i capi dei sacerdoti glielo avevano consegnato per invidia.
11 Then the chief priests incited the crowd, so that he would release Barabbas to them instead.	11 Ma i capi dei sacerdoti incitarono la folla perché, piuttosto, egli rimettesse in libertà per loro Barabba.
12 But Pilate, responding again, said to them: “Then what do you want me to do with the king of the Jews?”	12 Pilato disse loro di nuovo: «Che cosa volete dunque che io faccia di quello che voi chiamate il re dei Giudei?».
13 But again they cried out, “Crucify him.”	13 Ed essi di nuovo gridarono: «Crocifiggilo!».
14 Yet truly, Pilate said to them: “Why? What evil has he done?” But they cried out all the more, “Crucify him.”	14 Pilato diceva loro: «Che male ha fatto?». Ma essi gridarono più forte: «Crocifiggilo!».
15 Then Pilate, wishing to satisfy the people, released Barabbas to them, and he delivered Jesus, having severely scourged him, to be crucified.	15 Pilato, volendo dare soddisfazione alla folla, rimise in libertà per loro Barabba e, dopo aver fatto flagellare Gesù, lo consegnò perché fosse crocifisso.
16 Then the soldiers led him away to the court of the praetorium. And they called together the entire cohort.	16 Allora i soldati lo condussero dentro il cortile, cioè nel pretorio, e convocarono tutta la truppa.
17 And they clothed him with purple. And platting a crown of thorns, they placed it on him.	17 Lo vestirono di porpora, intrecciarono una corona di spine e gliela misero attorno al capo.
18 And they began to salute him: “Hail, king of the Jews.”	18 Poi presero a salutarlo: «Salve, re dei Giudei!».
19 And they struck his head with a reed, and they spit on him. And kneeling down, they reverenced him.	19 E gli percuotevano il capo con una canna, gli sputavano addosso e, piegando le ginocchia, si prostravano davanti a lui.
20 And after they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple, and they clothed him in his own garments. And they led him away, so that they might crucify him.	20 Dopo essersi fatti beffe di lui, lo spogliarono della porpora e gli fecero indossare le sue vesti, poi lo condussero fuori per crocifiggerlo.
21 And they compelled a certain passerby, Simon the Cyrenian, who was arriving from the countryside, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to take up his cross.	21 Costrinsero a portare la sua croce un tale che passava, un certo Simone di Cirene, che veniva dalla campagna, padre di Alessandro e di Rufo.
22 And they led him through to the place called Golgotha, which means, ‘the Place of Calvary.’	22 Condussero Gesù al luogo del Gòlgota, che significa «Luogo del cranio»,
23 And they gave him wine with myrrh to drink. But he did not accept it.	23 e gli davano vino mescolato con mirra, ma egli non ne prese.
24 And while crucifying him, they divided his garments, casting lots over them, to see who would take what.	24 Poi lo crocifissero e si divisero le sue vesti, tirando a sorte su di esse ciò che ognuno avrebbe preso.
25 Now it was the third hour. And they crucified him.	25 Erano le nove del mattino quando lo crocifissero.
26 And the title of his case was written as: THE KING OF THE JEWS.	26 La scritta con il motivo della sua condanna diceva: «Il re dei Giudei».
27 And with him they crucified two robbers: one at his right, and the other at his left.	27 Con lui crocifissero anche due ladroni, uno a destra e uno alla sua sinistra.
28 And the scripture was fulfilled, which says: “And with the iniquitous he was reputed.”	28
29 And the passersby blasphemed him, shaking their heads and saying, “Ah, you who would destroy the temple of God, and in three days rebuild it,	29 Quelli che passavano di là lo insultavano, scuotendo il capo e dicendo: «Ehi, tu che distruggi il tempio e lo ricostruisci in tre giorni,
30 save yourself by descending from the cross.”	30 salva te stesso scendendo dalla croce!».
31 And similarly the leaders of the priests, mocking him with the scribes, said to one another: “He saved others. He is not able to save himself.	31 Così anche i capi dei sacerdoti, con gli scribi, fra loro si facevano beffe di lui e dicevano: «Ha salvato altri e non può salvare se stesso!
32 Let the Christ, the king of Israel, descend now from the cross, so that we may see and believe.” Those who were crucified with him also insulted him.	32 Il Cristo, il re d’Israele, scenda ora dalla croce, perché vediamo e crediamo!». E anche quelli che erano stati crocifissi con lui lo insultavano.
33 And when the sixth hour arrived, a darkness occurred over the entire earth, until the ninth hour.	33 Quando fu mezzogiorno, si fece buio su tutta la terra fino alle tre del pomeriggio.
34 And at the ninth hour, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eloi, Eloi, lamma sabacthani?” which means, “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?”	34 Alle tre, Gesù gridò a gran voce: «Eloì, Eloì, lemà sabactàni?», che significa: «Dio mio, Dio mio, perché mi hai abbandonato?».
35 And some of those standing near, upon hearing this, said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.”	35 Udendo questo, alcuni dei presenti dicevano: «Ecco, chiama Elia!».
36 Then one of them, running and filling a sponge with vinegar, and placing it around a reed, gave it to him to drink, saying: “Wait. Let us see if Elijah will come to take him down.”	36 Uno corse a inzuppare di aceto una spugna, la fissò su una canna e gli dava da bere, dicendo: «Aspettate, vediamo se viene Elia a farlo scendere».
37 Then Jesus, having emitted a loud cry, expired.	37 Ma Gesù, dando un forte grido, spirò.
38 And the veil of the temple was torn in two, from the top to the bottom.	38 Il velo del tempio si squarciò in due, da cima a fondo.
39 Then the centurion who stood opposite him, seeing that he had expired while crying out in this way, said: “Truly, this man was the Son of God.”	39 Il centurione, che si trovava di fronte a lui, avendolo visto spirare in quel modo, disse: «Davvero quest’uomo era Figlio di Dio!».
40 Now there were also women watching from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joseph, and Salome,	40 Vi erano anche alcune donne, che osservavano da lontano, tra le quali Maria di Màgdala, Maria madre di Giacomo il minore e di Ioses, e Salome,
41 (and while he was in Galilee, they followed him and ministered to him) and many other women, who had ascended along with him to Jerusalem.	41 le quali, quando era in Galilea, lo seguivano e lo servivano, e molte altre che erano salite con lui a Gerusalemme.
42 And when evening had now arrived (because it was the Preparation Day, which is before the Sabbath)	42 Venuta ormai la sera, poiché era la Parasceve, cioè la vigilia del sabato,
43 there arrived Joseph of Arimathea, a noble council member, who himself was also awaiting the kingdom of God. And he boldly entered to Pilate and petitioned for the body of Jesus.	43 Giuseppe d’Arimatea, membro autorevole del sinedrio, che aspettava anch’egli il regno di Dio, con coraggio andò da Pilato e chiese il corpo di Gesù.
44 But Pilate wondered if he had already died. And summoning a centurion, he questioned him as to whether he was already dead.	44 Pilato si meravigliò che fosse già morto e, chiamato il centurione, gli domandò se era morto da tempo.
45 And when he had been informed by the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.	45 Informato dal centurione, concesse la salma a Giuseppe.
46 Then Joseph, having bought a fine linen cloth, and taking him down, wrapped him in the fine linen and laid him in a sepulcher, which was hewn from a rock. And he rolled a stone to the entrance of the tomb.	46 Egli allora, comprato un lenzuolo, lo depose dalla croce, lo avvolse con il lenzuolo e lo mise in un sepolcro scavato nella roccia. Poi fece rotolare una pietra all’entrata del sepolcro.
47 Now Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph observed where he was laid.	47 Maria di Màgdala e Maria madre di Ioses stavano a osservare dove veniva posto.
