Sirach 42

1 You should not repeat a claim heard from the revealing of a hidden word. And then, truly, you will be without shame, and you will find favor in the sight of all men. You should not accept the reputation of someone, so that you would sin, nor should you be confounded in any of the following things:	1 - di riferire il discorso udito, e di rivelare una cosa segreta. Cosi tu avrai il vero rossore, e troverai grazia al cospetto di tutti gli uomini. Non ti vergognare [invece] di tutte queste [altre] cose [che per dire] nè aver riguardo a nessuno, in modo da peccare:
2 in the law of the Most High and his covenant, or by giving a judgment to justify the impious;	2 della legge [cioè] dell'Altissimo e del suo patto, e d'una [giusta] sentenza a favore d'un empio,
3 in a word among companions and fellow travelers, or by distributing the inheritance of friends;	3 del conteggiar con gli amici e gli ospiti, e della divisione d'eredità tra compagni;
4 in the fairness of scales and weights, or in acquiring much or little;	4 della esattezza della stadera e delle bilance, del molto o poco acquisto,
5 by the corruption of buying and negotiating, or in the ample discipline of children, or in causing the side of a wicked servant to bleed.	5 del vario guadagno, nella vendita e nel negoziare; della severa correzione de' figliuoli, e di far sanguinar le costole a un pessimo schiavo;
6 A seal is good over a wicked wife.	6 sur una moglie cattiva, buona cosa è il sigillo,
7 Where there are many hands, seal and deliver all things by number and weight; and truly, give and receive everything in writing.	7 e dove son molte mani, chiudi a chiave; conta e pesa ogni cosa che fornisci, e metti per iscritto quel che dai e ricevi;
8 You should not have shame in correcting the senseless, the foolish, and those youths who would judge their elders. And so shall you be well-instructed in all things and well-approved in the sight of all the living.	8 [non ti vergognare] di riprender l'insipiente e lo stolto, e i vecchi che voglion gareggiare con i giovani. E sarai prudente in ogni cosa, e troverai approvazione al cospetto di tutti i viventi.
9 The vigilance of a father for his daughter is hidden, and his concern for her takes away his sleep. For perhaps, in her adolescence, she might be brought into adulthood. Or when she lives with her husband, she might become hateful.	9 Una figliuola è l'insonnia segreta del padre, e la sollecitudine per lei [gli] toglie il sonno; nella sua adolescenza, perchè non oltrepassi l'età, e andata a marito, perchè non divenga odiosa;
10 In her virginity, she might be defiled, and then she may be found to be pregnant in her father’s house. Or perhaps, when she lives with her husband, she might stray, or at least become barren.	10 finch'è ragazza, perchè non sia contaminata, e si trovi incinta nella casa paterna; e andata a marito, perchè non trasgredisca [1 suoi doveri], o per lo meno rimanga sterile.
11 Keep a close watch over a self-indulgent daughter. Otherwise, at some time, she might bring you into disgrace before your enemies, and into disrepute in the city, and into reproach among the people, and so she may confound you before the multitude of the people.	11 Sopra una figliuola licenziosa accresci la vigilanza, perchè non faccia di te il ludibrio de' nemici, la chiacchiera della città e l'improperio della gente, e non ti copra d'ignominia davanti a tutto il popolo.
12 She should not choose to gaze upon the beauty of every man, and she should not choose to spend her time in the midst of married women.	12 Non guardare alla bellezza di un uomo, e in mezzo alle donne non t'intrattenere.
13 For a moth goes forth from garments, and iniquity over a man goes forth from a woman.	13 Come invero dalle vesti viene fuori la tignola, cosi dalla donna la malignità d'[altra] donna.
14 Yet iniquity over a man is better for her than if a married woman, seeking to benefit her, instead leads her into confusion and disgrace.	14 « Meglio la cattiveria d'un uomo che una donna benefica» e una donna che disonora sino all'ignominia!
15 And now, I will remember the works of the Lord, and I will announce what I have seen. The words of the Lord are in his works.	15 Ricorderò le opere del Signore, e ciò che ho veduto racconterò. Per la parola del Signore esistono le sue opere!
16 The sun illuminates and considers all things, and its work shows the fullness of the glory of the Lord.	16 Il sole lucente si spande su' tutto, e della gloria del Signore è piena l'opera sua.
17 Has not the Lord caused the holy ones to describe all his miracles, which the all-powerful Lord has firmly established in his glory?	17 Non concesse il Signore [neppure] ai santi di raccontar tutte le sue meraviglie, che il Signore onnipotente ha consolidate, perchè stabili fossero a sua gloria.
18 He has examined the abyss and the hearts of men. And he has considered their astuteness.	18 L'abisso [dell'oceano] e il cuore degli uomini egli scruta, e penetra le loro scaltrezze.
19 For the Lord comprehends all knowledge, and he has gazed upon the signs of the times: announcing the things of the past, as well as the things of the future, and revealing the traces of hidden things.	19 Perchè il Signore sa ogni cosa, e osserva i segni de' tempi: annunzia il passato e il futuro, e rivela le tracce delle cose occulte.
20 No thought passes by him unnoticed, and no word can conceal itself from him.	20 Non gli sfugge nessun pensiero, e non si cela a lui nessuna parola.
21 He has adorned the magnificent works of his wisdom. He is before eternity and even unto eternity. And nothing can be added,	21 Le magnificenze della sua sapienza egli ha apprestato, egli ch'è prima de' secoli e per [tutti] i secoli: e nulla è stato aggiunto,
22 and nothing can be taken away. And he has no need of any counselor.	22 nulla tolto, e non ha avuto bisogno del consiglio alcuno.
23 O how desirable are all his works! And all that we consider is but a spark.	23 Quanto amabili son tutte le sue opere! e appena una scintilla se ne può contemplare!
24 All these works exist, and they remain in the present age, and they all obey him in every purpose.	24 Tutte queste cose vivono e durano in perpetuo, e tutte in ogni occorrenza obbediscono a lui.
25 All things are two-fold, one facing another, and he has not made anything to be lacking.	25 Tutte sono appaiate, una di fronte all'altra, e nulla egli ha fatto di manchevole.
26 He has confirmed each thing as good. And who would tire of beholding his glory?	26 Di ognuno ha assicurato il bene [per mezzo dell'altra]: e chi si sazierà di contemplar la sua gloria?
